Honestly, whenever any company says 'We employ a rigorous process of due diligence..' is just so cringy and obviously lying, not just for the betting industry but almost all industries now as long as the money is flowing. Proper due diligence and honesty are rare in business practices nowadays

The reason that this has less than 25k views in its first week is that everyone now just accepts total and utter corruption, abysmal due diligence and complicity across the Premier League and the whole of football. Money is money in the football world, full stop.

This has been a problem in commercial sport ever since players started putting sponsors on their shirts. From F1 to PSL the business model doesn’t make sense and hence teams are vulnerable to dubious characters with deep pockets. Not too long ago crypto bros were big sports sponsors, where are they now?

The willingness of British entrepreneurs to deceive the laws of their own country (in cooperation with "anyone") and the extraordinary lengths they are prepared (well-equipped and well-informed) to go to achieve this sinister goal is jaw-dropping and extremely upsetting. The legacy (and the tradition) of corruption in The UK has not only ruined its historical status and its one-time decent reputation but also the daily lives of their citizens. It seems, there is no limit to the influence of money in the British society, everything has a price. Once an avid fan, I stopped watching football long time ago.

If you cannot ID the ultimate owner of the business you're dealing with, you don't know with whom you're getting in bed. Meaning your due diligence is superficial at best. Complex corporate structures including shell companies may not be a crime but is a huge red flag. Regulators know this and need to stamp it out

  • @JFASACM

It's been the same in Brazil. For the past couple years, one by one of the first class soccer teams started receiving sponsorship from betting sites/apps that came out of nowhere. There are about a dozen now. Haven't heard the name of any owner. Interestingly, they all transmit the idea that online gambling in sports is something widespread. It really wasn't. The convinience of it now is what is turning a malevolent practice that governments around the globe just tolerate in mainstream. It is becoming the new cigar. And it's happening really fast. Taxing fees are still under discussion in the polytical sphere. Meanwhile, who knows who's getting richer?

This is the system that the UK (or more exactly some small elite in the UK) has embraced and promote. Secrecy through the british offshore territories, it is used for this, for money laundery, for evadinng taxes, etc. The problem is estructural and there is no real intention to change it

Not sure that anyone watching this with a modicum of knowledge about modern banking, finance and tax evasion would be in the least bit surprised.
That we are all governed by heads of states doing exactly the same as these Chinese gambling companies may explain why there won't be any measures to address anything.
Indeed, the bulk of FT readers probably happily fall into this category or wish they did, so there's always that.
