Also, the single's cover art features a lot of the things they saw in the background, behind their combined faces.
Here they are, from the bottom left :
Gerbils in a kiddie pool
A big pie with big eyes and big thighs
Dolphins dressed in monocles with tiny top hats that cover up their blowholes
A bear learning how to waterski
An anaconda in a condescending disguise
Bowling balls made of peanut butter
Dr Sonic holding a bottle of tonic
Santa (´s legs)
A beautiful tree
A beagle eating bugles
Jimmy Fallon's hat
A farting guy's kite
A frog doing his taxes while he sits on a swing
Mushrooms in an ice storm
The robot from TC's Artificial Intelligence, crying softly on a barstool
AMAZING
NO WAYYYY
After his "Perfect Pokerap" song, it's not surprising BDG flexed like that with the lyrics in his verse. The guy knows a thing or two about feet.
"oh, Brian is shrinking there"... could you say... That he's... A SHRINK!!!
I think that first ‘merging’ of their faces is meant to look like a constantly-shifting ink blot, where one face is the ‘ink’ and one is the ‘paper’.
Don’t know why I put merging in quotes, that’s literally what it is lol
A good comedy song just isn't complete without an Insane Ian reaction.
Now THIS is a quote! Thanks!
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
kris profile pic in the wild!
Tom has a way of making his lyrics sound like natural speech, while Brian is great at making collections of words that flow and bounce really well
What a crossover, they truly have a pair of beautiful minds.
I am so overjoyed that you gave this a 20 minute breakdown; I've been obsessed with this collab song since it first came out.
Same
bdg never misses lol, love his songs with louie zong
I always thought that their comedy stylings would mesh well, and this song proved me absolutely right. Their voices blend beautifully together, and the lyrics are nothing short of incredible. Props to BDG's wife Karen for filming as well!
that "I know" near the beginning was honestly the funniest part for me, it's a very clever breaking of expectations with the rhythm.
Santa's elves unionize is a callback to Naughty or Nice.
Oh damn, you're right! Nice catch!
Also the robot softly crying on a barstool reminded me of Artificial Intelligence
I love that you picked up on Brian's ability to spit crazy complex lyrics! If you wanna see it in more action you should look at his Pokerap unraveled
I believe the honey bee holding a gun is a reference to BDG's song "this song is not a metaphor"
I still need to check that one out!
And elves unionizing the north pole is a reference to one of Tom's!
@@IzzyRoseDoesArt I thought it was weird they used Santa twice but then I realized that it was a reference to "Naughty or Nice"
And the bear learning how to water ski is a reference to Tom Cardy's song "Your Love is Not Enough (I'd like Some Cool Sh*t Too)"
@@thescooshinator that's a *DOG* riding a jetski, which I mentioned here. You may have confused it with the bear with a saddle from the same song.
I don't think that Brian was greenscreened in the beginning. I think he's just a short guy and that's a large couch :P
the "santa's elves unionising" is also a reference to a tom cardy song about... elves unionising hahaha
For me, Tom Cardy's work really shines in how much of a bop the orchestration and such brings to the party, and BDG's fingerprints are all over the phenomenal editing on this one. But I have no doubt that they both collaborated on the lyrics.
And, after watching this one, I can't imagine a subject for them to collab on that would be anywhere near as fitting as this one.
The posters in the background of BDGs apartment are legit rather than set dressing, I'd wager. Brian's fiance Karen Han (seen in several of Brian's videos) has worked as a film critic amongst her other talents, and relatively recently wrote a well received biography of Bong Joon-Ho. :)
Jesus and Australian Man come together to write a song catchier than anything mere mortals could make
This might sound weird, but I mean it in the best way possible: you sound/seem happy, and that makes me happy! Some videos you've started off with having problems, or the camera dying, or it being late at night, but here you can really see a glow! And that makes me more ready for laughs and a fun time.
May you always have a good time while recording (and just in life in general
Thanks. Honestly (if you've read my community posts) this has been a really tough month (my father passed a few weeks ago) so while I'm not "happy" exactly, I wanted to use the videos to have a semblance of...normalcy? And doing these videos puts me in a good mood...when things work, at least. 😅
@@Insaneian I didn't know about this at all! That makes sense, why you've had a tough time. I'm sorry for your loss, and thank you for putting out content even tho life sucks at the moment
You can also read this song as a delightfully absurd ode to how nice it feels just to find someone who thinks like you do. And I just love that so much.
no idea why you think they were green-screened, brian looks strange at the beginning because of the lens and tom is able to phase over because they just cut him out of the background
brian and tom literally touch their seats too and you can see them push down from the weight
Huh. So they do.
He just seemed so small compared to the couch it messed with my head. That happens on a first impression reaction...some things are perceived wrong. 🤷♂️
@@Insaneian lol thats fine
@@Exantho 5:45 Ummm, how else would you do this without a green screen??
@@MrMelonsz if you look at how its done you can see that it is clearly just cut out, i said that in the comment
you dont need a green screen to separate someone from a background
you can tell its also not a green screen because the artifacting around the hand isnt green; its the same as the background
besides, why go through the effort to green screen it when he could just film it either before he went to america or after he got home and it would look consistent with his other videos and not odd
“I just watched Retribution, because apparently I’m a sadist”
- Insane Ian 2023
It’s so cool seeing someone who’s not insanely familiar with BDG’S work watching it for the first time! His silly yet impressive editing has always been a staple of his work! Excited to watch more of your reactions!
The dog is on a jet ski and the bear is on a water ski XD I love Tom so much
I love this song I've already listened like 6 times
I couldn't wait for this reaction to come out. I hope you enjoyed this ridiculously good collab as much as I still do! Beautiful Mind helps me through the hardest of work shifts.
The tell it to me straight doc is a reference to Lo Fi from Tom cardy shorts
That short is SUCH a banger, I’ve looped it way too many times
I was literally WAITING for this since beautiful mind accidentally came up on my Spotify page lol
I think BDG "shrinking" in the beginning is just due to perspective, the couch is kinda far from the camera compared to how close he was at the beginning.
Yes, but that's due to the green screen. When he's sitting on the couch later, he's not that small compared to the couch itself. 😅
@@Insaneian I don't know. The deformation on his sofa when he puts his hand on it as he sits down seems to match too closely. Like, I don't think I've seen a greenscreen match that closely outside of big art department stuff. But the lighting in that camera shot does make it look a little unreal for some reason. I think camera angle and maybe a different type of camera (to simulate a video call?) change the look enough to seem like his perspective is off compared to the room around him.
I think it’s just a wide angle lens
yeah the focal length can really fuck with apparent relative sizes in shots like that.
@@Insaneian I also don't think it is green screen because if it was green screen, Tom Cardy's hand reaching over to BDG wouldn't have looked so awkward. If in reality they were in the same room and there was a green screen background that represents their locations, then that would mean their hands were actually touching. But you can tell it was a trick where they edited it so Tom's hand was reaching into Brian's office and Brian was miming actually taking hold of it. You can clearly see that some of Tom Cardy's background is still visible around his fingers and the color is slightly different from Brian's lighting, and I think the moment his hand "touches" Brian's, it looks like a freeze frame with a very sloppy effort to remove the background. It very clearly is the lens they use because a green screen implies he would just be pretending to sit down while actually in the air and it just is too obvious that he is actually sitting down on something. Plus you can see his feet standing on the carpet. That is REEEEEALLY hard to do on green screen. Biggest question is why record something in green screen that can easily be done with a real set? The answer here is, you don't. That is definitely not green screen.
was looking forward to this review!
I always love your reactions, and this video was amazing, so it was great to see how you break it down.
Don’t ever apologize for rambling!! I come here for the rambling + your insightful commentary!!❤️ (Hope you’re doing okay!!)
Your own name is one of those delightful rhymes insane Ian 😂 I just got Tom's album on vinyl and I don't work here shorts and shirt as a present from me to me on my birthday. Best present ever cause I know what I want 😊 Always loving your reactions 😊❤
So glad I found this channel. My favourite thing in the whole song is BDG’s dances towards the end of the song
I think the word you’re looking for is assonance. With the repeated vowel sounds. As soon as I saw the song, my first thought was “watch it!” And my second was “Insane Ian will love this!”
Yes, that's it! Thank you!
hell yeah ive been waiting for this
I watched/listened to this song so many times! I was growing desperate for a reaction so I could see if you liked it as much as me.
I’ve been hyped for this one, good stuff man! 🙏
YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
I’m so glad you reacted to this! Immediately thought of your reaction when I watched it.
While I am looking forward to the NSP collab as well, the visual effects of this one come from BDG. He loves his weird visual effects, and always tries to throw something in to throw people off visually.
Obviously it could be coincidence, but you mentioned you were looking forward to the next collab at the point where the visuals explode, implications is that that's what's getting you hyped, which might be worth tempering your expectations to. I'm certain it'll be a good collab, but it won't be the visual feat that beautiful mind will be.
Oh I just meant the collab in general, not for the visuals. I think Tom and NSP's styles would work well together, musically. Just a coincidence that I said it at a visually exciting point 😅
I saw this for the first time a few days ago, and was hoping you’d cover it! I hope you’re doing well Ian, the world of comedy music wouldn’t be the same without you :)
To the comment that the short pause for speaking out of the melody can also work splendidly in non-comedy music. What springs to mind would be the song “Outliars and Hyppokrates: A Fun Fact About Apples” and the live version of BlackBoxWarrior OKULTRA, both by Will Wood where it’s done TWICE. Wether or not my point is invalidated by the interjection possibly being seen as comedic is up to you. (Idk why I’m talking about Will Wood, a musician who has made only two actual comedy songs in 2015 sometime, on a video about comedy music I have no idea, I do recommend his comedy songs (“I’ll never amoun to anything” and “Man, I Love Being Drunk”) and just general body of work because my man is I N S A N E, very on brand if I do say so myself)
Will Wood fan met in the wild holy shit
But also, most of Will's stuff has elements of comedy. None of WW's songs are without any comedy whatsoever.
@@pleasegoawaydude Well yeah, I just wouldn’t consider them comedy music. I would say they’re more witty than funny, The mileage may vary tho obviously. Like Becoming The Lastnames and 2econd 2ight 2eer are definitely on different layers of funny intent.
I am curious as to whether you've heard of Tripod before? They're another Australian comedy band that have been going for a fair while. If you're interested, "Lonesome Gregarious Cowboy" and "Ghost Ship" are good starting points.
I've definitely heard *of* them, but I haven't heard much *by* them, save for a few songs. I'll check them out, thanks!
Oh man, I remember Tripod from Skithouse back in the early-mid 2000s! Didn’t know they were still a thing, that’s cool to hear :)
I was waiting for you to react to this one. It is so good.
Random trivia:
A trumpet has a cylindrical bore (interior is the same diameter) until it gets to the bell, has the brightest tone.
A cornet has a cylindrical bore for half the tube length, then it goes conical and increases, in between trumpet and flugelhorn for sound.
A flugelhorn has a conical bore its entre length, so sounds the most mellow.
Anyhow, this is a great bop, with lots of fun wordplay. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I'm in love with this song, and it's nice to see the reaction of someone who appreciates it equally.
Just to clarify: The video is on BDG's channel, and the album (audio) version is on Tom's channel.
How did I miss this?! It's so good to have you back and see you smiling :D
Bdg's fiance/partner is a movie reviewer so the art may belong to her.
What a great day, this video came way faster than I though it would!
Been wait for this reaction since I watched the original video the 18th time.
I have been waiting for your reaction since this song came out!
I don't think either of them are greenscreened in the beginning when they sit down, only when they're both standing up. Tom rotates the chair he's sitting in and the shadows behind him are correct, and Brian visibly deforms the sofa.
I think everything from the beginning before they are in the same room together is filmed on location in their separate homes. And the evidence in my mind is watch when Tom Cardy's hand reaches out for Brian David Gilbert. It looks like he raises his hand and as the two locations move toward each other, right before Brian mimes reaching for it and taking it, it appears that there is a freeze frame and they shoddily removed the background so it can overlay over Brian's room and Brian can pretend to take his hand (if you watch the original video, it's 46 seconds into the song). You can even see that there is still some of the background left over around Tom's fingers. Which makes me think that it was intentional to look that bad, because I suck at photoshop and I could have made sure that all the background was removed and only Tom's hand and arm remained. My point is if it were green screen, they wouldn't have had to use that editing trick
The music also released on Tom Cardy's channel under the releases tab.
Wonder if you are gonna do a reaction to BDGs other songs: specifically you are my son and nesting season
They're on my list!
Nice shirt! And a very entertaining video!
Thank you on both counts!
I think, if you haven't already seen them, that I'd love if you went back to "Pumpkin Cowboy," "have you seen my laptop," and "building your online brand."
I think no one mentioned it yet, but on the Dr. Sonic lyric there's a lick that does not appear anywhere in the song again, and that lick would not be out of place in like 80% of OG Sonic OSTs
This song has a LOT of layers
Great reaction video as always! I love how you notice so many details that I have missed! 😮
I would really recommend checking out the Swedish comedy group Limba Power! They are a pretty new group but I think they will become awesome with time 😄 I’m really sad that barely anyone knows about this crazy duo!
The music videos I recommend to start with are “Rock in my shoe “ and “Penguin Gang “
I'd be interested to see you react to Brian Jordan Alvarez's TJ Mack songs. Specifically Sitting, Chicas, and Dentist are my favorites.
First video and I can tell he can make good comedy music because he is quite a good comedian!
Actually transformative reaction? Impossible
Great song, great to hear your thoughts as always.
One thing I've noticed with using , and . as navigation tools is that if the video isn't paused it does nothing. But I imagine you've tried while paused, so it's a shame it doesn't work for you, because it'd be handy. Hope RUclips rolls it out for you, I guess?
I've been singing this car in my song constantly for the last week wondering when you'd react 😩🤟
Did I seriously reverse "song" and "car" in my dyslexic haze
Finally, someone to explain the jokes.
I mean, I have a lot of folks that watch whose first language isn't English, so they usually appreciate the breakdowns when idioms and similies don't directly translate for them, but sure you can complain about it.
FYI since I see a lot of people mixing them up:
Sadist is enjoying pain in others
Masochist is you yourself enjoying pain
Second video and I enjoy this :)
I’m pretty sure it’s the plus and minus keys that skip frame-by-frame (just so you know for next time)
for me it's the comma and period (left and right angle bracket) keys
Wait, Tom cardy was recording with NSP?!
Yup! The title track from NSP's new album "These Nuts" features him! Pretty sure he'll be in the music video, too.
I did not know that the "I thrust my fist into the post..." line was a saying. When you said it at first I honestly thought you were just quoting Marianas Trench.
How about a reaction to Tom Cardy's "Time to Buy" song? Far less well-known than his other work, but just as funny.
It's been on my list for a bit, but I've had more recent things to get through first. I hope to get to it soon, tho!
@@Insaneian Well, at least you've heard of it :)
Huzzah! for posting it!
Why did you change your tung?
My...what?
@@Insaneian toungue
I spelled it wrong
@@spulp_lord OH! You mean my joke about replacing my tongue, since I stumbled on a word? That's just something I say when I trip up speaking sometimes.
@@Insaneian well im running with it, make up a reason, (if it fits in a comedy song it becomes better)
Bugles are a snack food like a chip only weirder.
I know what Bugles are. Corn snack, sometimes look like Witch hats 😅
Having weird al introduce the video
That's an intro I've had for years, used to use it in my act. 😅
Do you think you could react to my parody of "Come on Eileen"? I would love to get some input on it, because no one really knows about my music and I'm not famous or anything.
I mean, I probably won't film a reaction to it, but I can comment on it if you'd like. Just let me know how honest you'd like me to be. I take criticism very seriously, and if you're looking for criticism/advice, I will give it...but I will give it honestly. How honestly (simply or brutally) is up to you.
You turned a videos that was three minutes long into a video that’s seven times as long
You must be new here... 😅
🤦♂️ It’s like you actually *want* reaction videos to just be,
“😮😲😯😦-yeah it was good I guess… *The End”*
