Haha pretty much! Which is why solo Orca mining should be a supplement to other sources of isk income. Thats why at the beginning I said its terrible as your main source, but if you are running lots of miner alts, or just want something to do semi-afk to make a little extra isk, this is a decent option.

Before I won EvE about a year ago, I used to at times go out and solo belt-mine in my Porpoise in Amarr space. Same as you, I ran a MWD+Cloak, just in case - I think the fit had ~70k ehp; fairly sturdy, given the ~180mil (I think) total cost of the fit.
In order to enable me to tab out and play something else in tandem (while tabbing back in every 1-2min or so), I often assigned one drone to one asteroid and used a high slot mod that gave me +2 targets, enabling me to pre-lock 4 non-assigned asteroids, as the Porpoise is dreadfully slow when locking on to anything. It was fun mining like that and I could easily order all drones to one asteroid if I wanted to be efficient about it. Really, I didn't mine to make a hefty profit, but to stock up on ores for my own use (the same character is also spec'd into industry).
That said, I'm now back in EvE and refreshing my theoretical knowledge, which is how I found your channel and you've got yourself a new subscriber; I quite enjoy your relaxed style.

You should use abyssal damage control instead of normal t2. Cost only around 50 mill and are alot better.

@@eventon9372 yea, wouldn't use it on "cheap" ships, but 40-50mill for 7-8% more tank or how much it is are so worth it on a 1.3 bill ship, and they aren't so easi to find if you don't actually know they exist since they cant be bought on marked:)
@@goldeneagle256 yea, I focus on getting the ones with increased therm/kin resist. I noticed that 100% of HS Orca ganks involved LOTS of catalysts that just do therm/kinetic damage. So even though it may have a negative to EM or explosive, those damage types don't need to be resisted anyway.
First of all the Orca is not a mining ship its a command ship and it can take up to 4 to 6 hours just to fill one and in the same time you can mine alot more with the smaller barges
well, depends if you solo mine or are in a fleet. for solomining you gotta use a procurer. my skills on those are pretty much maxed out, and yield on those for me are with mining drones t2 around 1400m3/min. my orca can do about 1550-1600m3/min yield. but that can allso stay in belt forever as you say, and it can target 5 rocks, when barge only can do 2 at the time, so in reality even for solo mining in hs, the orca are quite good, and you can put so much tank on it, gankers in practice dosent stand a chance. but if you compare a lonesome orca yield with a 40% maxed and boosted covetor, then your right about orca dosent stand a chance

Technically yes, its an industrial command ship but considering that has solid solo mining potential and it has 5x the ore hold of a Mackinaw so its going to take longer to fill up naturally. Some miners stop when their ore hold is full, other miners stop after a time period no matter what. Guess it depends on what kind of miner you are if time in belt is an issue for you.
Considering that my Orca with T2 mining drones pulls 4.5m3/s x 5 drones means it gets 22.5m3/s (25.5m3/s with Augmented). My alt with completely maxed yield skills and 5/5 exhumer gets 10.9m3/s x2 T2 lasers, upgrades and crystals on a Mackinaw to a total of 21.8m3/s.
I could crunch a bunch of numbers and make other points why the Orca is better solo but long story short is, the Orca with great mining drone skills can actually out mine any of the other ships solo (other than the covetor/hulk but they are a nightmare to solo). The only exception to this is if there are implants to increase mining laser yield OR if the mining ships use T2 or better mining drones themselves in which case they are pushing around 25-27m3/s so its more than the Orca.
Sorry for the rant but you are absolutely right, its infinitely more cost effective and less skill intensive to use a barge instead and maybe some mining drones along side to increase yield. I purposely went out of my way and spent lots of time and isk to my Orca to that point.
If your Orca needs 4-6 Hours to fill up entirely you do Something wrong :D my Orca is Mathematically full after 3 Hours, and About 3,2h Real-time.
i prefer to hs moon mining since most of the rock is more than 180km3 which will fill the orca bay without relocking or moving, u can try to rent from alliance in kianti they got moon drill active every 2 day to prevent downtime, and if u got jackpot moon pop the value of its mineral is about 70-80mil for full orca, without moving alot

I was thinking about making an high sec Orca alt for afk mining to just sit in background making some extra isk. But if it can only make 15 mill an hour, means about 90h mining time a month just to be able to afford plex to keep it running, and then top of that twice as much just to make back initial cost to get it started? Dosent looks worth the trouble at all in my eyes? Hm

Having an alt dedicated to just Orca afk mining isn't ideal. The skilling would take a long time for not only the ship but also mining drone skills.
But if you are running it along side at least 2-3 other barges/exhumers with mining boosts then it might be worth it. My boosts give 33% more yield to my 3 alts meaning it's basically creating a "4th exhumer" in bonus yield. The yield scales a lot the larger the fleet.
Hence why I plan on making videos on how you can make ISK with an Orca outside of mining.
@@eventon9372 well, that i know. got 3 toons in NS i use for mining main to boosting in orca or a porpoise. only missing industrial command V i currently training for maximum boosting skills. other 2 are in hulks or covetors depending on how safe intel are:) with that setup im filling up my orca in about 35-40min. reason i was looking into hs mining tho are its more relaxing and safer. and there is times espesially in weekends where there so much going on its not safe to bring out minig fleet at all
@@goldeneagle256 thats awesome! It would be a dream to mine in a Rorqual in NS sometimes. There are still plenty of pockets in HS for good mining even on the weekends. Just gotta find them
Orca is a huge investment. Im not at that level yet, so thinking about the Procurer

didnt know about the compact member list thing! and I made sure to look up those systems in zkillboard ahead of time to before I mined there to make sure they were relatively safe. Thanks!

eg. i used to be in sirseshin wich has 93% suitability means you are attacked by 10-15 trigs within 2-3hours of farming for sure...
@@Mucknuggle funny enough all of my characters are trig-aligned so I used to mine in their systems since it was so safe from other players. lol You dont get the 10% mining boost like the edencom systems but those places were super competitive with other miners.
Trigs were, and still are much more dangerous than edencom with them sitting on gates in their systems and roaming WHs that spawn trigs in places like Perimeter. I dont mine much anymore but CODE is still active but only in their usual ganking routes.
If you're worried about how much ISK you're making per hour, than you're playing the game wrong. There is no competition in the game other than what you decide. If you like mining, ignore the other activities and enjoy leveling up your personal game in mining. If you don't want to pay for the sub, play the alpha game.

I use the can method with a convertor I believe. I figure if I'm already afk mining having ore stolen is the least bad possibility :)

Upgrade drone speed and range with some high slots. Take the whole belt. Their travel time is the bottleneck. You'll get WAY more per hour.
interesting thought, are you sitting in the middle-ish of the belt mining all the rocks? or are you closer? Tbh I see those types of fits ganked all the time due to their lack of tank and slow align time.. but I could be missing something
@@eventon9372 I do both depending on the belt and security. Being closer IS faster. And boosting drone speed makes the short trip almost instant. Which adds up over an hour. If the belt is secure and hasn't been any orca kills I'd sit near middle and mine it all while staying aligned to a quick exit. Drone speed also lets you recall drones before that 10 second cycle time on the microwarp. I also run a Higs rig which works with micro warp drive alignment if you get bumped. You only need to be facing the general direction and still warps.
I just started orca mining to kill time, its not for the profit, cuz its defently not worth the investment-risk-return, my fit and yours on high/low slots are the same, on meds that's were it varies, i use 2 X t2 multi, 1 EM hardener, 1 x XL shield booster, 1 drone nav comp. (plus TB9 booster in cargo) on rigs i went for more tank with the t2 hull rig bulkheads, in total with heat and not poping the booster i get 520K EHP, poping the booster will rep me for 827.3 each 4.3 seconds, i will be getting the t2 shield comand mod for extra tank, and its also very worth it to buy a cheap abyssal DCU for 15 mill or so. with your rigs you are probably mining faster, but for the return i dont think its worth it to sacrifice a tank, i had some scouts on me and when they scan me and see the tank they go, nop not worth it lets look for something easier. but like i said, im very new to orca mining and i might be totaly wrong. cheers o/
you sound like you know what you are talking about. Each Orca pilot is going to value different things, so your fit isn't wrong or anything, just different.
There are mainly 2 schools of thought imo, Tank vs yield/time in belt.
I prefer to max my yield and then tank up with the rest of the mods. I get 33% more yield with my mining rigs vs someone that doesnt and I am out of the belt 33% faster than the Orca next me. Less time in belt, means less time gankers have to find/scout me out. Another reason why I have the 500MN MWD for 10 align time. Saves time system to system jumping but also allows me to get out of belt in 10seconds when CODE shows up in local. Without it, its 39 seconds which is still enough time for CODE to show up in local, and be in your belt before you can get into warp. I do run an Abyssal DCU2 in my Orca (I dont put it in my fits since it doesnt show its stats) and I focus on therm/kin resists since all Orca ganks involve LOTS of catalysts doing that damage type. Though I have noticed CODE occasionally using Coercers dealing EM/Thermal but the majority of the ships in the gank are still catalysts.
Your fit is fine, you enjoy high tank with some yield. Lots of tank could fend off gankers from even bothering you. The drone nav is nice to reduce downtime of drone travel time increasing yield. I will say this, don't completely rely on your tank, with the right gankers logged in, they will always have more than enough catalysts alts to take you out. Its just a matter of if its worth their while.
Only 2 bits of feedback on your fit. Like I said prior, all Orca ganks involve catalysts and lots of them. The only time EM is targeted is when Coercers are there but they usually make up maybe 10% of gank fleet and deal some thermal damage as well. Which is why imo you should swap the EM hardener to a Gist-X type Thermal hardener which are only 20m or so in Jita. That way you are resisting damage no matter what shows up since the EM won't help vs catalysts. 2nd, the XL shield booster I am on the fence about tbh. Its not good in 1.0 - 0.7 systems since ganks there are done in 12 seconds or less. But in systems like 0.5-0.6 it actually could help a lot if the gank takes longer. Assuming you have 65% resist in your hull (you are hull tanked) and an overheated catalysts can easily do 700dps with T2 guns, your XL shield booster would 'undo' about 3 catalysts worth of damage per second. I would have to crunch some more numbers but an XL shield booster could be great if your shield resists for therm/kin are north of 80% (heated) since each 830hp received would go further than your hull.

Harvester mining drones, plus max skills, plus a alt or 2 in hulks/covs really good isk/hr

you actually use harvester drones? they are like 450 mill each, and would put a big fat target on your ship. dont see in what world they would be worth it?

@@goldeneagle256 there are some systems that CODE doesn't travel to. 3 places in general.
1. Just get away from Jita/other major trade hubs. Ususally 8+ jumps at least. Look up your mining system on zkilloard and see if there are frequent ganks.
2. Far corners of low/high sec. Kinda the same advice as above but just much further away and arguably safer in general but hauling all of the ore can be a pain.
3. Mining in a Triglavian invaded system. If you are pro-trig aligned like me, this was actually the safest option despite only being 4-7 jumps from Jita at times. I think CODE players didnt care to make their 30 alts all trig aligned so they just seem to ignore those systems now and still roam the edencom systems.
Again, always look up the system on zkillboard and if there hasnt been a mining ship gank in over a month, I would say its relatively safe. I personally dont have the balls to use harvester drones.

not a bad idea! I do have some video ideas with it hauling, fleet mining, and maybe doing L4 security missions just messing around :P

@@FineGuy96 yeah that's sad, with the new core thingy it's tougher to own a structure.. maybe CCP should consider this as the player will still be limited due to lack of compression ability but he can move all his alts to a place in a single ship 🤔🤔

wow 14 mil an hour in a 3 bill isk ship. one that is easily gankable and a prime target for ganking. I used to make 80-200 mill an hour mining in highsec with an orca and 2-3 barges.
call it 10mill an hour. 8 hours a day 80mil. 7 days a week 560mil. per month 2.24 billion. Plex=1.2 billion. You would need to mine 8 hours a day every day and only lose 1 ship every 2 months just to break even. And with free to play gank accounts good luck with that.
well the Orca fit I used is worth about 1.3b but prices have been dropping. I see buy orders in Hek for Orca's being fulfilled at 875m so there is that. I agree, using a Solo Orca as an active way to make isk isn't great which is why I recommend it as a semi-afk way to make isk OR bring a fleet. There are other roles the Orca can do too which I plan on making videos for eventually. Thanks for the comment!
@@eventon9372 @EVEnton Vid was good. HIghsec mining is just not sustainable anymore, with all the nerfs and economic nerfs to hisec mining.
And the fact that you can gank in an alpha account but to run a barge you need to plex an account. so 1.2 bill for the privilege of being ganked by free to play accounts.
I say this from the perspective of someone who multiboxes alpha catalyst fleets to gank orca's. cost me like 700,000k to build and fit each ship. I can gank 3-5 orcas an hour.
When highsec mining could sustain an account I used to run fleets with my orcas for people, have a toon or two in an ecm frig for anti gank tank and have another toon just warp in in a cheap ship to attack the fleet and draw concord to the belt.
But all the miners quit and none of the new players bother with it sine there is no profit in it. So now I gank orcas. because nothing else mines in highsec.
@@lengthOFpole true, but that argument can be made about any ship in EVE. Nothing is safe from mass multiboxing cheap T1 catalysts in HiSec.
Especially when I look on zkillboard and see terrible Orca fits. Maybe only 1 of every 20 Orcas are properly tanked and not asking to be ganked (people using 2-3 officer drone navs, losing 10-15% ehp by using power diagnostic T2 instead of bulkhead T2, cargo expanders in the rigs and/or lows, inertial stab rigs/lows, and Orcas that arent even fully fit lol)
If you have a poorly fit Orca, you are guaranteed to get targeted. The best way to not get ganked is to just avoid rather than tanking it since the gankers will win that fight 9.5/10 times. Avoid notoriously known gank systems, check zkillboard activity and keep a close eye on local.
Regardless, I agree with you that HS solo Orca mining isn't great. I've only played EVE for a year so I am not sure how good it was but I've heard stories likes yours.
It truly is a shame that CCP would do that to the game - so obviously planned to phase out high-sec mining and lest we not forget, 'make more money'

The Orca just reminds me of the 'Tonka Truck' toys I used to play with as a kid lol though it might be a more fitting name for a full tanked bulkhead Orca instead :P

Talk about a terrible let-down for newcomers who look to the ORE ship tree with envy - they will surely feel ripped-off when all is said and done
Not worth it, get a hulk alt and then hulk + orca drones its worth it. 450k EHP tank orca with 2 mining drone rings, augmented drones and bulkhead / dam control in lowers. Put a double armor buffer thorax with neutrons in the orca hold, with two webs on it. If gankers come, stow the hulk and get the cruiser out, warp your orca to station, wait 2 seconds and then web your orca. It will insta warp. This 99 times out of 100 prevents orca ganks and hulk ganks. Good luck!
Yes a fleet is always better than solo but the video is just focused on solo play this time. Pretty cool that you can web your Orca but it sounds like a lot steps for someone like me :P
13-14 mill isk per hour is a bit brutal. This kind of thing is probably best left to the botters. If you want the safest isk, then fly a paladin in high sec and do lvl 4s, you'll make 30-100 mill per hour, and all you do is sit in bastion and shoot rats from 100km away. Everything melts, there's no risk of dying, and i've never once seen anyone dare to try to act suspect around me. Of course, i run a poverty fit of cheap t2s, so who would?

Well, of course you can make more fighting. BUT DED sites are not a guarantee. You are exposed to others killing you as you have to go low sec. You can do abysals but you will lose your ship sooner or later. But most of all you have to be aware of many things all the time. When you mine with just two accounts (once orca and one hulk) you can make proper isk semi afk GUARANTEED
I high sec orca mine 3 hours to eat away a few fields and you arnt wrong its not the best way to make money but hell its relaxing BIG edit....the only downside to this even with high sec people still stupidly mess with you
I decided null sec was just too active for me for the last year or so, so I made 6 accounts and pushed them all to 100% miners and all indy slots. So now I have a fleet of orcas I active/afk mine in in HS lol. Found an island and sell and make armaments for low sec fights lol simple life.

Use a compressor. You'll bank 2 bil isk after the 10 hours it takes to fill it.
