Nice informative video. Lautaro's story must've been the inspiration for Thrall in Warcraft: Son of a Warchief, parents killed by humans, then raised by his oppressors only to learn from his race's oppressor and lead the Horde (orcs) to victory.
Niiice, great connection to make. Warcraft lore is so badass.

Rare Earth *TY* for *ALL* re: educational media. You're extraordinarily adept your craft, & an asset to humanity.
Have you done a story on Squanto yet, the Native American who kept the Plymouth colony from dying due to Socialism? I think it would make a great Thanksgiving show.
"If you go out for revenge, best to dig two graves". Ancient Chinese proverb.
CAROLINA PATRIOT Some would gladly dig their own grave, as long as the one who wronged them lay next to them.

Only if I'm planning to kill two people. But even then, I'd probably just put them both in the same grave.

@Pecu Alex Mapuche people were not, in fact they were defeted by the chilean state in the 1860-1880
And Mayans just kinda dispersed into the jungle since the country was basically on fire well until 1920, almost 400 years since the foundation of the state of Yucatan

That’s a hell of a story. Hope you visit Argentina at some point and tell some stories of my home country!
If you know any good ones you should give him some pointers, I would definitely like to hear more about South America. There's plenty of interesting stories about Brazil too I bet :)
From the top of my head I can mention as pointers these stories:
-The love and revenge story behind one of the first skyscrapers of Buenos Aires (the Kavanagh Building)
-The story of "The savage" Justo José de Urquiza, his Estancia in Entre Ríos Province, and his eventual death
-The story of the Quilmes people who where forced to walk from Tucumán to Buenos Aires (1.200 km) after years of ressistance
-The Welsh people in the atlantic shores of the argentinian Patagonia and his friendship with the Aonikenk (tehuelche) people
-The Jewish villages in Santa Fe province
-The Nazis building one of the first nuclear reactors of the world in Bariloche
-The curious evangelization of the natives in Misiones Province
-The Malvinas/Falkland crazy war
-The not so heroic acts of the mapuche's in this side of the Andes
-And so on and on...
But, there's plenty of things to talk about in every country I guess. I, as an argentinian, would love to see some stories being told from here to, but I think I understand what he's trying to achieve, and in order to produce good content he's taking his time.
I just hope that someday he comes to Argentina and told some of our stories, this land is as "rare" as earth can get.
Please as a Brit i ask don't start about the Falkland's. all you'll do is bring crazy's to the comment section. Anti British and anti Argentinians will come in droves.
HistoryFan476ad youtube comment section is usually 95% trash anyways, I doubt the people you are talking about are any worse than F**t Ea***ers (yes I had to censor that, even just mentioning the word is enough to open the floodgates)
paraguay has amazing stories to talk too. the two most brutal wars in south america originated in paraguay.
You guys keep capturing lightening in a bottle! How on earth are you making great video after great video; over and over; without relent?! Rare Earth really deserves to succeed. Never mind being one of the best Channels on RUclips; I would argue the series is on a par with the best that terrestrial T.V. or premium streaming services have to offer, period.
The conquest of Chile is written in epic like no other in America. Ercilla, part of the conquistadors who came to Chile wrote without a doubt one of the best epics ever written. One part say (Spanish) “Chile, fértil provincia y señalada
en la región Antártica famosa,
de remotas naciones respetada
por fuerte, principal y poderosa;
la gente que produce es tan granada,
tan soberbia, gallarda y belicosa,
que no ha sido por rey jamás regida
ni a extranjero dominio sometida” in english “Chile, fertile province and marked in the famous Antarctic region, from remote respected nations strong, main and powerful; the people who produce are so pomegranate, so proud, gallant and bellicose, that has not been king never ruled nor to foreign domain submitted.” Hermoso...
Amazing as always. Proud to be a patron. I dream about the day you'll come to Brazil and tell the story of our people with your unbiased point of view.

You better pet that dog or there is going to be problems
Stray dogs are a huge issue in Chile. For some reason their culture has gotten so used to them that they don't do anything meaningful to protect them.
Stray dogs are really normal in Chile, they're everywere, and normally their taken care by people who pass by and leave food and water or homeless, but DO NOT PET THEM
@@constanzaramirez117 why not?
@@TheSaint135 cause they are not showered (very very dirty) and most probably have fleas and ticks, also, quite agressive and territorial
In any case tho, a lot of people dont care and still pet them, which ok, but the biggest problem is fleas (fleas allergy in chile is as common as peanut allergy in americans)

Awesome story. Reading about this more, it seems that Lautaro also learned cruelty from the Spanish. He was so cruel that the local natives decided that they preferred the Spanish and betrayed him to them, leading to his downfall.
"Conquistadors rarely come out looking like the good guys"
Except in Spain.
Not really. Many people here don't see them as the good guys.
@@martiny.9366 I disagree, the official perspective is they were heroes. I don't see any serious debate about all the monuments and street names that pay homage to them, like there is with the Confederate generals in souther US, for example. Hispanic Day, on the 12th of October could not be a greater tribute to colonialism and the lost Spanish empire.
@@ChicoCabra Well, I live in a town where many people are leftists and non-nationalists, so my perspective is certainly skewed.
However, even if the official stance is still recognizing the Conquistadores as heroes, more and more people are starting to think the opposite (specially young people).
@@martiny.9366 I live in Madrid and work in a multinational company and it is very easy to hear reactionary comments, defenders of Francoism and ultra-moderates who don't see why anything should be questioned or changed.
@@ChicoCabra Well, I suppose living in Rivas and being a college student doesn't help to know how most people really think. Thanks for the info.
Dude thanks for doing this, I love all your videos about Chile!
I hope you make one about Galvarino, he was pretty much a real life Wolverine
Dammmmmnnnn I wish I'd know about him when we were filming.
And don't forget about Caupolican, he was the real "toqui" chosen for his matchless strength
Except Galvarino died in that first campaign after his murilation.
Wasn't the bloke with the two knives strapped to his arms 'after the Spanish cut off both his hands name something like .. "Lonko Kilapan" who says that he's partly descended from Spartans!
I was confused why they glorified Valdivia, but then I remembered we have Colombus in America
Andrew Jackson, General Sherman, Custer.... etc. The "Pilgrims" were the worst, even other European settlers couldn't trust them.
I don't think he is as much "glorified" as "remembered". Valdivia and Almagro were indeed what gave birth to "modern Chile", same as Lautaro, Galvarino and Caupolican gave birth to Chile's "soul". It's far less about praising them than it is to understanding that they were part of what we are today.
Exactly. We all know who Valdivia was but nobody glorify his persona.
Sherman did what he did to bring a quick end to the war, Jackson was an asshole and Custer was an idiot
We don't really have a "Valdivia" day... but good or bad, he's a key part of Chile. We can't erase that part of history.
This has happened 2 millennia before in what is present day Germany. Armenius - a slave of the Roman empire - destroyed 10 leigons. Although it did not halt the Roman empire, Augustus was furious.
Felt awesome listening to another Armenius in action!
Aaditya Udupa check out Boudica. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica She gave the Romans a Ire!
hurricanes hurricanes
She was defeated, Arminius/Herman no.
Arminius was defeated, not by Roman arms but by treachery from his own people who sold him to the Romans in exchange for peace. He died in a Roman prison.
I can't be the only one who somehow got side tracked from the story by the cute pupper sitting in front of the statue of Lautaro..
I know Dogo
You definitely weren’t that doggo was so cute XD
You can't tell a story ab Chile and don't have a quiltro xD

Why are you everywhere
Timothy Hilditch That theory has been debunked. It is most likely he just had no life and also the way our brain works. You see him in 5% of the videos you watch but it seems like he is everywhere because you remember when you see him, but forget it when you don't.
Timothy Hilditch none of them provide that low numbers
Those boys at the end are so beautiful, I pray for humanity and peace. I know the world can be a great place if we appreciate it and each other. All the best Rare Earth team, thank you for your work
Such an awesome story. Never heard of it. I have a friend whose name is Lautaro and he will be happy to know his name comes from this outstanding warrior.
In Chile, Pedro de Valdivia is not seen as a hero, he's just seen as a historical figure. We don't celebrate him, just recognize his impact, and any namings of streets or cities after him come from older times, we've just decided to preserve them
You haven't made a single video that didn't give me goosebumps by the end. So glad I found this channel
Perfect winter story to warm the heart. (And given how chilled you look, Not Chris, I'm glad you were able to enjoy your journey and present a nation most of us outside of South America know not much about.)
I really love your content so historically informational and the way you tell the stories are quite amazing
Valdivia is taught in the chilean system as The Least Bad Conquistador, as Diego de Almagro had directed an expedition to the place where Santiago is now but had turned back when he found no valuables (and the might of the Mapuche), therefore Valdivia has always been painted as an urban planner over a greedy conquistador (before the independance, Chile was the only spanish colony that couldnt finance itself). Another fun fact is that lots of spanish statues got defaced in the south of chile during the 18/octuber of 2019 happened
Man, I wish there was a movie about this. Imagine how epic the battle scenes would be.
thank you for teaching me this . so much i dont know about my country and people , glad i found your channel
You have some of the best videos that make someone look inside themselves and how to look backward to see our future.
Wow! What a story. Thanks for creating & posting.
This was fucking amazing. Great naration, great editing, and sound design. Keep up the awesome work!
Stories of revenge always prompt someone(or several someones) to contribute the "dig two graves" quote in the comments. One might conclude that those people haven't personally experienced events that cry out for revenge so loudly as to awaken the realization that your over the top vengeance just might be the only thing that will keep others from having to learn the kind of lessons that put you on that path.
I feel convicted every time someone uses that quote on me and immediately stop secretly developing strategies for vengeance in the impenetrable war room of my mind. I promise.
@@avamasquerade I keep lists. Plural. That way the original list I used to carry around isn't so unwieldy and is way less likely to arouse the curiosity of people whose names are probably on it. Discretion is a frequently overlooked component of a solid revenge plan.
@@avamasquerade Your reply is just perfect, btw. You are obviously an expert.
For me that quote can be used only in western countries not those Asian countries that has had big empires... Cause the difference with the mapuches and most other culture... Slavery does not exist in their culture...
They where known as warrior race.. But in reality their "battle call" where actually a call too their "God" preparing themselves too kill people who they actually don't want too but have too cause too defend their land.. And the battle cry or whatever u can call it, is for themselves too not get loose ine the cruelty that is about too happend. And take note that Christianity or any of the other big religion did not exist then.
Not sure what you mean by "slavery does not exist in their culture". With VERY few exceptions, slavery has existed everywhere and still does...it just isn't quite as out in the open now. No auctions in the public square. But slavery is very much with us and has been so. People trafficked into sex slavery ARE slaves, bought and sold. And people are still sold as labor, even in the west, though frequently they enter as illegal immigrants, heavily in debt to their smugglers in a system where chances are, they may never be free of that "debt", though they will pay it fully dozens of times before they die...always being told they owe a bit more. And there will always be parents who feel "I can do whatever I want with my child"...and that includes selling them into slavery.
The last words in your videos are ALWAYS chilling, and this time it was no exception, bravo!
Thank you for your time and research on these long forgotten lands and individuals. I love you work keep the history coming..
Credits: "AN AMAZING COUNTRY with such terrible bread." LMAO! I've been telling my lovely Chilean wife of 17+yrs that they have "fake bread" in her amazing country. hahaha!!! I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight. ;)

Great video as always Evan. But where was the apocryphal bell at 3:08?
Ha! I forget myself.
That last bit on the end card. Every fact bases RUclips video needs this.
@4:10 "Horses would've been terrifying to a people unaccustomed to riding animals"
By that time they had domesticated Alpacas and Llamas. Llamas were used for transportation and often ride on them.
The physiology of a llama means they could never carry humans like a horse in full run, and would not be used in battle as a steed. It was very different.
"Quotes are just generalizations; there will always be exceptions... Except this one."
Thanks for putting my country's history for the world to know, Mapuches still given the fight for their lands in the south, and also a fun fact the first masonic lodge in Latin America was named Lautaro!!!!!
That last line. Wow. Chills.
As my spear pierces my enemy's heart, it pierces my own as well. That's a rough quote, I think from Star Trek.
That’s a movie 🎥 for sure! Damn good one too. Thanks for making this!
I went in Mexico during honeymood and my wife and i went see Chichen Itza and, when there, i considered how fun had to be to Conquistadores to put up a siege to cities like that, being used to far taller and thicker walls, to firearms wielding besieged and cannons versus spears and lances. What carnage had to be that conquer....
Man, spanish conquistadors sound terrifying, and I am a Brazilian, whose history isn't that different.
Not different from indigenous local rulers, just stronger.
G-Rex Saurus the bigger the stick, the stronger the blow.
It's said the bigger they are the harder they fall, but sometimes the bigger they are the harder they can kick ass.
@rigegs The Imperial troops the Swedish had success against weren't Spaniards, but Germans. The Spanish defeated the Swedes decisively the first time they crossed paths in Nordlingen in 1634.
Great story! That reminds of Herman the German, who wiped out Roman legions in an ambush.
This is one of the best channels on RUclips, he’s really good at explaining history of different countries and peoples from around the world in an unbiased, objective, and clever way. His channel is both really interesting and educational instead of most of the other videos on RUclips which makes the dumb even dumber.
Your ending credits are like a mix of Longmont Potion Castle and Monty Python. Amazing every time.
In Chile we don’t see Valdivia as a hero, but we see him as an important character in our history. And our heroes usually depends on who you ask, but Lautaro is a hero for all of us :)

Freaking phenomenal job
Great video as always, but... I have to ask.... Where have you been buying your bread!? Our points of reference are clearly different. I live in Britain and here you need to go out of your way for good bread, there's good baguettes... but I miss the Chilean bread variety ... I particularly miss the Hallulla bread! Not too "fluffy" but not hard or too big either. Semi-spongy, freshly baked, it's delicious, I can eat it on it's own and it's sturdy enough to hold big sandwiches if needed. This round one: fundi2.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/08hallulla.png.
I also liked this other French variety, called "pan frances" or "marraqueta" depending on what part of Chile you are from, apparently its called "Sous-Brot” in France: i2.wp.com/104.207.155.101/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/07batido.png

I'm about halfway through and this is really starting to sound like django unchained... and I'm loving it
Varus and the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest is similar, but in my opinion more dramatic, except..... the Romans went back later for their slice of revenge, and so it went on.
