It sure is nice to have that reverser handy when one chokes. One day I must've choked a 9600 with only a 22 foot head 5 times trying to pick up some down rice. Darn near had the head and feederhouse running as much backwards as forward. What a pain in the ass. I don't even recall if the early 20 series had that reverser or not, I'm sure the late ones before the 00 series had some sort of reverser. One thing that was good about me choking that day was I was darn sure to be getting all of the crop that was flat as a pancake, might've took 3 days to cut 30 acres LOL
Thanks for sharing if my memory serves me the 9600 we had on the farm was a first year machine and it only had a dipstick like you mentioned they traded it off around 3000 separator hours never had any problems like that
Excellent to see a green combine on your channel I grew up on a wheat farm here in Australia n we ran a 7720 aswell as Deere tractors so I am a green fan but I have also operated 1680 2188 n 2388 aswell as various other Deere combines n did like the 2388 but it just wasn't a Deere as the conditions in Australia sometimes suit certain machines we sold the farm in 2002 n my father also had trucks or semi's or as some Americans say tractors so I became fulltime truck driver but I still spend time in combines when I can alot actually also I do ALOT of grain carting n one of my clients has a L2 n not entirely sure what model his other Gleaner is but because of your channel I have really become to appreciate not just older machinery but Gleaners so I am going to spend some time in both those machines this harvest Keep up the great work love your channel
Brandon first time I run a combine by my self I only went about 100 yards. I plugged the feeder house. The combine was a 1959 john deere 45 or 95. ( about 1969 )
Just did this job on 9650sts. Same reverser. It is recommended to put loctite in between reverser input shaft and inner sheave on variable speed. I had to make a puller to pull it apart when we rebuilt it last year. Figured it was just stuck from years of being together. Made it just over a year before the roll pin wears out and let’s the whole assembly walk off. Not sure why they use the ball and set screws vs 2 roll pins.
They recommend deere 460 synthetic oil in the reverser and change every 100hrs now, I guess the problem was the 80w-90 conventional would break down from heat
I’ve herd that cooler kit was an add on option. I believe the 10 series reverser had ports for the cooler so you could retain the dipstick. Either the 50 or 60 series combines had a built in pump for the oil cooler.
The 9400,9500, and 9600 jd combines were some nice walker machines of there time. Is this particular 9600 converted with 10 series updates? Great video as always keep them coming and throw back Thursday are the best
The reverser coolers was added to run 12 row corn heads they came out on the 8820 first that tube for the return looked jacked up but there should have been a dip stick in there to check oil now days they run HD 460 oil in it. in the day I think they where the best machine out there 1680's and 1688's and 2188's where right there with them but we seemed to have better dealer support with the JD's. running just an 8 row head I would take the cooler off and use HD 460 oil. I have run combines all my life start on Gleaner G's my grand dad had Massey super 92 the first time I remember From Gleaners went to Massey 760's then come the JD' my dad always ran Jd's started with the 95.
well i bet o josh is a very happy guy that is a terrible over engeneered reverser electric is way to go till you have to buy the rev motor i have a friend who has alt/str shop last one came in canyout get r/r parts have to buy new you all can do it all enjoy watch0ing
You weren't missing the keyways, you are missing the keys. The keyway is in the pulley, the key seat is in the shaft and the key is what connects the two.
Thanks for the video. I was working on that just yesterday.
Another example of, " If ya ain't a bit techy ya ain't a farmer". Kudos to you my friend, lot of knowledge in that head of yours.
You're a great young man. You're are getting a double thumbs up from me for raising you the right way.

This is the firsf video I have watched and hit the sub button!
Thank you!
All we had on the farm when I was a kid was a 1950s Massey Harris 35 for a combine ,
Great job on Josh’s combine. Glad you could help him out. I think he owes Dad Strength lunch for compressing that spring solo!!
Those dust tubes are a miracle on those machines I’ve seen them work definitely a great add on

Great video Brandon and nice to meet Josh. Yeah had to use Dad Strengths Big Guns 💪 on that spring 😂

It's kinda of a dumb design your right it should have to roll pins maybe I should pull it back apart and loctite it like yours

My brother is in Nebraska tonight picking up the 1960 John Deere 730 Deisel I bought online
Great video!

Did Josh say that he bought it from Barry McCockinher? I thought that was one of Moe’s prank call names from the Simpson’s?
That was funny!
He definitely did and I cracked up!

By the way, keyways are in your hub and shaft and keys were what you needed and were waiting on
Lol yeah I know sometimes I say things wrong when in my head I actually know but it just comes out wrong

Thank you for the information!
10 series have built in fan in the feeder housing
Cool thank you!
👌👌👌👌👍🤘🤘🤘
I'm sure Josh was running it full bore. ;)
The sun gear is in the center, the three gears around it are planet gears.
I did say that wrong didn't I I wasn't even thinking
Is this the same machine that was destroyed by an engine fire a few days later?
Such a shame. She really was quite a machine. That's farming...
Does he run a 8 row or 12 on that?
well i bet o josh is a very happy guy that is a terrible over engeneered reverser electric is way to go till you have to buy the rev motor i have a friend who has alt/str shop last one came in canyout get r/r parts have to buy new you all can do it all enjoy watch0ing
I would ad a pressure switch and a warning light to that oil circuit , So he dont have to worry about it again
I don't know if it would make enough pressure it just circulates
@@dirtgrainsteel Surely it makes a pound or 2 you can get switches that low . It was just a thought . Maybe even a flow switch would work
You weren't missing the keyways, you are missing the keys. The keyway is in the pulley, the key seat is in the shaft and the key is what connects the two.
Had 6620 for 25 year's now 9510 for last 8. The reverser is definitely a weak link especially if your not very gentle with it.
How you remove it
Do them get dark or not just a dumb question
If there's any bronze gears or bearings in that drive that gl5 oil will destroy them...

Thank you for joining!!
I was wondering what that tube was for thank you for pointing that out
Your welcome!!
