    I made a shell holder from 304 stainless for a 45x310r ussr anti tank gun, also modified my 50 cal ammomaster press & made neck size & seat dies. The only mod to press was lenghen top plate rods & rethread top plate to 2 1/4"x12 with a big ass tap.

    I liked the final bevel on the front. V2 can start from an oversized cutter so that the bevel works as a funnel to guide the shell in.

    People kinda wonder why I have a TIG welder, MIG welder an O/A rig, a lathe, a milling machine and etc in my shop. Well, things like this little project are EXACTLY why!! The time thing is a legit concern, but OTOH when you have to wait for something to arrive (maybe---IF they have it) days later and then it turns out to be somehow WRONG when you can just go out in the shop and make a "whatever" and have it done to suit EXACTLY what you (or a buddy!) need is well worth the cost----not to mention the personal satisfaction you get out of both the process AND the finished item!

    I think I'm going to give this a shot tomorrow.
    I load 308 and determined a while back that after firing, a datum point on the shoulder of my brass was at something like 1.631"-1.633".
    After using the Lee full length sizing die set up so that it made contact with the shell holder, the shoulder was being pushed back to around 1.622" or less. I was having trouble getting the accuracy from my rifle that I wanted so I started backing out the die until the brass was around 1.628". It seemed to help tighten up the groups a good bit, although I can't say 100% if that was a factor or not. I'm shooting a semi auto and a lot of people would say you need more shoulder bump than that but I haven't had any issues and I've loaded a bunch between 1.626-1.630".
    Only problem with that set up is that because there isn't a definitive "stop" like the die bottoming out on the shell holder, there was just enough slop where the handle stops moving to allow a bit of variation. Some would be 1.630", some 1.625".
    I'm thinking about making a shell holder that is a hair taller than the lee one and hopefully that remedies the inconsistency. Only have a mill and no rotary table so I'll have to improvise. Can probably chuck up a piece of steel and turn it on the mill with the tool clamped in the vise. Who knows, should be a fun project if nothing else.

      Lee sells a good shell holder for a reasonable price (around $4.50 currently at MidwayUSA). Some of the other companies sell ones that are not noticeably better, but sometimes $20 or so. If you need one *now* and its not available locally, it's nice to have the option to being able to machine it yourself. I have a 7x14 mini-lathe and could do everything other than the milling operations. One of these days, I guess I'll probably have to get a milling machine or a milling attachment for my lathe also.

    Your tool for the undercut doesn't need ground down as much as you have, also keep the rpm down as not to burn up the tip. That is the only hard part-the undercut. I have made several but as you said it is cheaper to buy. You did a nice job!

    Fantastic. You'll have to demonstrate in more detail exactly how you made the undercutter (the one that worked). I gather it's a modified and ground-down drill bit of some sort.

    • @Ammochannel
      @Ammochannel  10 лет назад

      You're almost spot on my friend. I ground down an old end mill (flat bottomed milling cutter). It worked ok but I had to resharpen it once during the process. The material was a grade 3 bolt. Also the end mill was a lot longer than desired but I didn't want to grind up a nice one. Thanks for watching.

    • @Ensign_Cthulhu
      @Ensign_Cthulhu 10 лет назад

      The Ammo Channel Ultimately blame Lee for not packaging a shellholder in their RGB die sets (they do with everything else, and I'm sure most people would gladly pay the extra few dollars). It's probably done to encourage you to buy the shellholder set. :p

    • @CCW1911
      @CCW1911 10 лет назад

      The Ammo Channel
      Nice job using what you have. I wonder how critical the thickness of the slot is? It's only real job seems to be keeping the brass from sticking in the die so it could probably be quite a bit thicker which would make the tool easier to grind and stronger.

    • @GunFunZS
      @GunFunZS 10 лет назад +1

      jsm666 Lee makes it really obvious on the RGB packaging that this is their only product that doesn't come with the shell holder. They go out of their way to say it is the extreme cut rate version of thier stuff.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 7 лет назад

      The strength of the shellholder does not seem to be a problem in my experience. When I've gotten a shell *really* stuck, it was the rim that ripped out, no the edges of the shellholder.

I am in the process of making a full set of tooling, shell holder, dies, bullet mold so I can load for my 1873 Remington RB. The shell holder was pretty basic, but I was stuck on how to cut the groove for the shell rim. Your idea about doing that is, by itself worth the price of admission! Besides, it gives me something to do with that old coffee can full of old worn out and chipped endmills. I just have one problem...... None of the old bolts I have lying around are rusty. Any suggestions?

    There are few problems that cannot be solved with a lathe, mill and tig welder. Oh and some rusty bolts.
    I have made specialty cutters many times from a few pieces of O1 or A1 tool steel. I would make an under cutting tool like that from a piece of half inch A1 tool steel. I would turn it to diameter, then turn down a shank. Part it off then into a 6 sided 5C collet holder onto the mill and cut some teeth out of it. Harden, temper and grind. It's likely very thin, so going will be slow and with lots of oil.
