Your video is spot on. After viewing it, I had the information that saved me a ton of cash. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the smell of that gear lube!
I'm glad you got it done. Now it's time to go boating.
2 tips, tilt the engine all the way up for 5 minutes before draining. Then do the same after adding oil. Then check dipstick with engine tilted down. This will insure the oil gets out and into any pockets in the engine.
man, that looked like a little water came out of the top vent hole when you pumped in the gear oil........
Excellent video. I have a 115 ProXS now and am getting ready to do the oil and gear oil. I'm surprised they moved the lube port to under the prob. I always like to give that a good visual every once in a while, and that makes it a little harder I think.
On a positive note.........under the prop, DEFIITELY makes you inspect the prop more often, which I always fail to do :) :) .
Great video man, I gotta make more maintenance ones. Wow that filter was on way too tight for it to dent like that when you took it off. Like you do, I only ever hand tighten mine. I have to say I now do most of my own mechanical and all my own maintenance because I’m often disappointed with mechanical service centres.
Well, you just saved me $250. Didn’t realize you can use a grease gun. Now I do!

You might want to think about investing in a 1-1/16 deep socket for that prop nut. It will save wear and tear on it.

Awesome video! How many hours do you have on the motor now? Any issues? I have a 2017 with 82hrs so far
I have this same engine (2015) with over 400 hours now. Outside of proactive maintenance, I have not had any issues with this engine, other than having to replace the prop bore sleeve ($5 white plastic part) which came off after the 5th season of use. This appears to be a common failure, and when it occurs exhaust will escape and result in prop ventilation. Engine and lower unit oil changed at end of every season, including the recommended 300 hours service (impeller, spark plugs, etc).
antoinephillips awesome thanks for the reply! We got it in 2020 and it only had 50 hours so we went ahead and did the full 3 year service to be safe. I love the motor just not a lot of info on them out there.
Kenneth ryder I have a 2017 90 with 2,020 hours. I am a full time fishing guide and this engine has been flawless other than replacing a trim motor.
Does the 2017 Merc 115 have an hour meter on it? If so, I have not seen it.

Just buy the correct oil filter socket tool, makes the job even easier. And you need to get some more tools for that propeller :-)

What year is your engine? Also what oil weight and filter did yours need? I have a 2017 mercury four stroke 115 hp.
Mine is a 2016 4 stroke 115. It takes 5.5 qts of Mercury or Quicksilver NMMA FC-W 10W-30 4-stroke marine engine oil. 27.1 fl oz of Mercury or Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lubricant and I use Mercury part number 35-8M0065104 for the oil filter. Hope this helps.
@@Pause4Life I have a 2018 E16 with 75hp. Is the Oil filter the same as the 115? Also is the Gear Lube capacity the same. I need to change the oil and gear lube for the first time
What was the purpose of the top drain tube under the filter? I didn't see anything come out.
Mercury makes a little drip tray under the oil filter to catch any spills that may occur when removing the oil filter. The upper hose is connected to the drip tray to drain away any mess in the tray. I try to be careful and not make a mess but this drip tray and drain hose is a great idea by Mercury. Although I didn't create a mess, sometimes you do and this keeps oil from running all down the side of the engine into every nook and cranny. What size plastic tube is that? I have a 2019 115. Is it the same as what your doing? Also you took off the propellor and stuff for the year oil? I’ve seen people do it without taking it off?
I guess the 2019's could be different, but on my engine, you can't drain the gear lube without first removing the propeller. I suppose a guy could suction the lube out from the top, but this would not be advisable for a number of reasons. 2019's may have a different design. My Suzuki outboard does not require the removal of the propeller, but this Mercury does.

The upper tube seem to have no fluid coming through was that just for air or vacuum or did you blow through that or anyting it did not appear to have any oil come out of it

Was your oil filter dry when you took it off mine was just residue in it. It was very tight as well.
Mine is usually fairly empty- I wouldn't say dry, but I usually place some paper towels in the tray under the filter and I get a small amount of oil on the paper towels. I've never had enough oil come out that required the use of the drip tray and hose. I don't know why but I've found that the factory puts those filters on extra tight- it's frustrating.
@@Pause4Life even though there was no oil in it I assume it is ok engine runs great 90 CT on pontoon. I was just curious if that was normal.

Thanks for your help the video , while doing my oil change in my 150 4-stroke I accidentally poured a Tic Tac sized piece of the foil seal from the oil jug into my motor should I be concerned about that? Thanks in advance
You're not the first person to do this and you won't be the last. This would bother me and I would try to flush it out, but I'm not going to go into how to do that in a youtube comment section. I know some who would say that it likely won't do any harm, but my position is that if I could get it out, then I know for a fact that it won't do any harm. Sorry for the bad luck. Hopefully someone here might have a more useful comment than mine. Good luck and I'm sure after this, you'll always be mindful to never repeat it.

What is that greasing tool called?
I don't really know. I just call it a grease gun or grease pump. I use it all the time on all types of equipment- it's a must have.
What size oil filter did you use and what type of oil?
Size? You just use the correct oil filter, and follow the owners manual or the instructions on the front of the motor.

I just had it laying around. You can pick it up at Lowes, Home Depot, or most any auto parts store.
