This was very informative. I’ve been obsessed with watching spiders lately, and I find the jumping spider to be adorable. I’m not at the point, I’d be brave enough to hold one, but I do enjoy watching them.
Thank you, and welcome! Unfortunately, the lids are a pain to make yourself as you probably know and though I've made and offered them in the past I've since moved on to mainly using square containers with trapdoor lids (as can be seen on my "pet spider habitat kit" product page on the website).
Just found your channel and subscribed to it. Great video on jumping spiders. I raise butterflies and moths but enjoy other Insects as well. Living on the east coast I enjoy seeing different places like Arizona or other states. Keep up the great work on your videos. Can't wait to see what you do next.
It was briefly down while we were setting up the Sky Island Adventures booking software. It's back up and running now and we hope to see you down for a 3 day/night adventure. Thanks!
I love jumping spiders and this was a great video. It would be nice if all of the random clips were at the end, or at least have delineated chapters. The info promised by the title didn't begin for almost 7 minutes. Thanks again for the video, I'll have to try keeping a jumping spider soon!
I pop the cork and mist at a 45 degree angle through the opening. Little hits the lid. Some does, but most goes downward and on the sides of the cup, and in a "spray" pattern. I just turn the cup as I spray so that some fine droplets settle on each side for slings everywhere, if that makes sense.
Thank you very much for stopping in to say hi and while spiders use venom to subdue their prey, very few of them by percentage have venom that is medically significant to humans. Happy journeys!
Some I have acquired over the years and reuse. Others I cut a hole out of the lids (available commonly) with a small pair of cosmetic(?) scissors and then cut out a piece of sponge from the dollar store. I don't know that there is a place you can buy them premade.
For me it's just familiarity with a species. When I'm not familiar with a species, it is more difficult. Give her lots of food! One of the other indicators for wild caught specimens is the season you find them in. This time of year (late October) they are usually adults.
@@bugsincyberspace mine are p. Regius they're my first purchased jumpers.. On one hand I want to breed them because I don't know how old they are and I don't want them to die of old age first but on the other I don't want to do it too early. They're both around 3/4 inch she being a little bigger
I have a concern about my flightless fruit flies I had them in the fridge to reduce movement for feeding my little jumpers but they would not reduce in speed so I stuck them in the freezer for around 10 minutes and they are now motionless but I’m afraid the spiders won’t feed on the motionless flies if they don’t thaw and begin to move for them to see and I can’t get a straight answer on if I just made a huge mistake and killed all the flies, help!!!
Pulling them from the fridge to the freezer in combination with ten minutes does sound like a bit much. Two things. One, not all fridges and freezers are the same temp. Two, moving them from a cold fridge to a freezer is not the same as moving them from room temp to the freezer. Ten minutes is likely too long but even if your flies are dead, it's possible that some eggs and larvae in the container are still alive. As noted in my "flies and fruit flies" video, always set a timer when you are putting feeders in the freezer. Sorry for the bad news.
I was going to keep a jumping spider but then I realized how many already live in my house with me. I have seen multiple courtships while laying in bed or sitting on my couch I love living bellow the mogollon rim here in az.
I'm trying to find a female emerald jumping spider. I have 2 healthy males and I'd love to breed them. If I'm ultimately successful I'd love to give you some so you can add them to your program. They're not as big as what many people may prefer, but they're one of the most beautiful jumpers in North America.
I LOVE SALTICIDS!!!!!!!!! My friend Kuoni has helped me see how cool they are, now I just need to get comfortable with non-ant hymenopterans and other spiders....
I brought jumping spiders from the pet store and the female produced 4 egg sacs and I didn't know what to do with the first one so I separated the baby after 2 to 3 weeks after hatching and they DIED 5days later I fed them fruit flies I lost all 4 egg sacs I had no idea on what to do, the first sac caught me by surprise the second one I tried to research it but still failed on all 4 egg sacs
I just found your video. My new regal laid eggs two days after I bought her! The eggs are a week old. I was wondering where you got that little sponge. 😊
This is a great video! Thanks for sharing it. I have a WC jumper that was gravid and has recently laid her sac. Slings have emerged from the sac and I have placed them in the same kind of 32 oz cup with several pipe cleaners. I never considered using excelsior. How do you separate the slings into their own cups with the excelsior? I would love to see a video on that.
I thought that mantis was a kung fu mantis 🤔 Also, how do you make that cup with the fruit flies in it? Looks like roots or something. My mamas egg sac just hatched on Saturday and I'm trying to see if there's a way I can collect fruit flies on my own. They're always on over ripe bananas I leave out. But I don't know how to go about catching them.
I have lots of questions! My spider just laid eggs a month after I bought her, and I have no clue what I am doing. I was wondering what kind of mesh you used? Also do you know if I could give the babies to someone with more experience?
Feed female well. Introduce male. Cross fingers. Nature takes its course as with the P. apacheanus pair that bred in the video. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Is it better to catch or buy one of these? I've got a great enclosure I think would be neat for a small spider. I'd prefer a spider or gecko but I think they need more space.
My beautiful Regal just laid about a week ago. I'm getting things setup. Where did you get your cups? And about how long does it take for the babies to emerge? I'm so excited for my Perfect Petunia's babies. 🥰

hi i had a question as i got my first jumping spider recently and it ended up having babies to my surprise since i wasn't aware of the signs it would have them so now they are all in their enclosure which is an issue because the babies will definitely be able to come out. should i wait til they leave the nest to separate them or should i do it earlier and bring the mother along into the container i have for them?
It's sort of a tough question to answer w/o seeing your set up. If you worry that the spiderlings will be able to escape through ventilation holes in the mother's container, you can cover those holes or modify the tank in some way. Generally, the best plan is to let the eggs hatch with the mother nearby. Once they emerge from the egg sac, remove the mother and put her in a new cage, at least temporarily. If you want to put her back in the tank where all the babies are you can remove all the babies, but that is a lot of work. There really isn't an easy way to deal with this problem. I find that the sacs are more likely to hatch if you don't disturb them through moving them, etc. but it might not matter that much. I'm just usually takes a hands off approach since the mother seems to want to be with her eggs and I just let nature run its course until the babies are hatched. Generally in nature the babies will disperse and mother will move along too.
@@bugsincyberspace they are currently hatched right now and have been for a while as i wanted to leave them with the mom and undisturbed as long as possible. currently they seem to move around a lot more than they have before but now im stuck on worrying if i should move both them and the mom at this point or if they dont need the mom as im having a hard time finding sources that go into detail about the different stages of everything at least for my situation which makes me wish i did a little more research so i could preemptively move her to a setup specifically for her having babies like yours.
Does the mating have to take a long time. I know it can take hours, but I have a couple audax and I swear he got insertion once. He made another sperm web and I put him with her again, and this time she aggressively jumped at him 2x. I separated them. I'm wondering if the first time took. It was like 10 seconds, and usually they seem to pair much longer. Idk what happened. 🤷🏼♀️
I just found a egg sack of hatched baby jumping spiders. The mom is dead 🥺 I would love for them to survive. If you could help me in any way to give me and them a fighting chance I will be extremely grateful. Thank you for your video.
OK, but it’s so adorable that the babies share
Thanks for sharing those tips. Jumping spiders are definitely the cutest of the arachnids.

I have the same fruit fly culture containers for my slings.
So you just mist the top of lid, correct?
