Oh yes, Graceland pulls out all the stops. Elvis lined his front yard with plane lights to lights it up like an airport. Graceland is a special time to go because Elvis really loved Christmas and made a spectacular display outside!! Still lives on today!
I’ve been to Graceland during Elvis’s birthday and the decorations are still up. It’s absolutely magnificent. They decorated it as he did. And it’s magical.
Elvis loves to sing the blues regardless of the time of year. It just seems so natural to him. There are many songs where Elvis, feeling the vibe of a song, would add little bits vocally and they would be left in. Great reaction Mike well done
Thank you again, for the great reaction to this song,it's a shame it was never filmed during this session, it would have been amazing to watch them enjoying themselves,Elvis so sexy singing this song.🎅❤❤
Elvis released two Christmas albums the first one was called, "Elvis' Christmas Album" released on October 15, 1957. The second one, "Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas" released on October 20, 1971. This song is off of his second Christmas album which was recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville; what you hear is what was released in 1971. The five-minutes-plus blues jam was edited down on the single to three minutes and fifteen seconds and was put out mainly to service radio and jukeboxes. Graceland has Christmas tours from Nov. 21 - Dec. 23.
Another bluesy Elvis Christmas song ... so "naughty" back in the day LOL ! Only Elvis could get away with it ! Elvis was , and still is , and always will be THE MAN ... TCB forever !
This was absolutely the original my granddaughter always says to me… Grandma is that really a Christmas song? We don’t jam the Christmas songs do we? Gotta love it.
Mike, I think you were spot on regarding the time of night this was recorded. The session ended at 4am, Merry Christmas Baby was second last song and the last song only took two takes. So, it would have been around 3am!
"Bad Man Elvis" is right..Elvis singing blues....doesn't get much better❤❤ he feels it from his heart all the way to his blue suede shoes 😉 yes the picture is his home... beautiful Graceland . It would have been amazing to be in the studio watching this great sound come together under his direction. Great reaction Mike...like Elvis would have said you TCB!!!( took care of business)⚡️
Yep, this is indeed a jam session that was later overdubbed before its release. The sound is very close to the original - it was very slightly remixed and remastered by Matt Ross-Spang for the 'Elvis Back in Nashville box set of three years ago; it's clearer and richer in audio quality and maybe a little more contemporary-sounding because of Ross-Spang sonic choices. It's still the original musicians playing. Elvis is doing what he loves - recording in the studio with everyone present . ie live, rather than relying on the multi-tracking to build layers of sound. He's all about being in the moment. When Elvis yells, 'Wake up Put', he's calling to bass player Norman Putnam who in an interview said that he found blues the most boring music for a bass player and so while he was sat playing on this long track - at 4am to boot - his eyes here literally started closing! Elvis got him alert again with that jolt!
That was wonderful! I've loved Elvis since childhood growing up in the UK. Sometime last year I realised I wasn't listening to his music as much as usual. I now listen to him every day. Love him, his voice, his humour, so much. I moved from South Wales, UK to NSW, Australia. Love Australia, but can't get used to Christmas in the summer 😊. Would love you to react to Danny Boy!
Love his rendition of Danny Boy ... so emotional ! Most people have no idea of his range of expression ... so many of his best songs are rarely heard !
Great reaction Mike, the original recording was a 9 minute jam which Elvis' producer Felton Jarvis transformed into a master take. You hear Elvis' band leader James Burton ("kick it James!" Elvis shouts to him) taking the lead on guitar, with guitarist Jerry Carrigan and regular fellow Nashville studio musicians accompanying Elvis. David Briggs is brilliant on piano, while Norbert Putnam (Elvis shouts "Wake up Put to him") is nailing the bass line. The geat harmonica you hear is a contribution of Charlie McCoy.
Huge Elvis fan here and I have read many articles that said this song actually started as a jam session because everyone was bored between takes during a recording session. Thats why you hear the rawness and it also accounts for the original take being around 8 minutes long shortened down to around 5 minutes for the released version. Dont know if its true because of all the mythology surrounding Elvis, but it makes sense when you hear the finished version and factor in those two possible scenarios.
They do have tours during Christmas at Graceland. Supposed to be decorated the same as Elvis used to do. I've been to Graceland once. Would love to go back
For more bluesy Elvis, try Like a Baby and Reconsider Baby from the superlative Elvis is Back album from 1960. Just back from the army and you hear how he's matured in the two years away.
I absolutely love when Elvis sings the blues! I also love Christmas with Elvis and it wouldn't be Christmas without him. I'm so happy that you are finding his Christmas gems and am looking forward to more. Thank you so much as always 🎄🎅🤶☃
I hadn't heard Bruce Springsteen's version of this song. VERY different interpretations! Just some random stuff for you, Mike: B.B. King said he wished Elvis would have recorded more blues songs. "We were the original Blues Brothers because that man knew more blues songs than most in the business --- and after some nights it felt like we sang every one of them". Yes, Graceland is open year around and is visited only second to the White House in the United States. As Elvis did when he was alive, the Christmas decorations are left up through his January 8th birthday. His 90th would have been in 2025. A candlelight vigil takes place each year and is posted on YT. Christmas was Elvis' favorite holiday, and he went all out on the decorations. Early on, he had to change the color of the lights lining his driveway because pilots were mistaking Graceland for the airport. On a personal note, my husband and I decided to make the trip to Memphis to experience Graceland during holiday time last year. Unfortunately, six hours into our ten-hour drive, we were involved in a car accident. Nobody was injured, but due to the damage to our car, we returned home. Very disappointing!
I love hearing that you really enjoy Christmas, too. It wouldn't be Christmas for me amd my family without Elvis Christmas songs blasting away. I have been listening to them for almost 70 years. Thanks for this one!❤❤❤
When Elvis was recording this record, it was during the summer months. That annoyed him so hon he had the air conditioning set on the very lowest temp possible hoping to cool the studio down even more.
Always expect nothing less, but the best. Just love his smooth, melancholy and longing, it’s too much. I always feel his presence and warmth. Thank your for sharing your thoughts, which I am in completely in alignment with your words of truth……❤ Yes, every Christmas is a duplicate of what he wanted, the process happens as it was during his life. Yes, there are tours to see everything as he saw it and an additional fact is Graceland is the 2nd most visited throughout annually only to the White House in Washington D.C. (capitol)….Yes, it is the original, because I do have the original album…..
Looked it up: recorded in '71, later in Elvis' career. It was originally over 8 minutes!! but was cut down to less than 6. the original uncut version is available on youtube.

Hi Mike, I’m pretty sure this is the official release but I suspect it was a studio jam. He did this in one take … again, suggesting a jam running close on 9 minutes. They trimmed it down to an undubbed master lasting 5 mins 45 seconds, with a guitar overdub 10 days after original recording session. RCA and co did a complete new backing track in 1981 as part of the song’s release on This Is Elvis soundtrack album. Hope that clarifies it a bit.
