Metallica told the bands to play the songs backwards or inside out for the Blacklist album and this is one of the very few bands/collaborations that had the guts to actually do it.

A-les-ia Cara is a Grammy award winning pop star from Canada. Alessia was invited by Metallica to participate in The Black List. AC has the same international manager as The Warning and suggested the collab. Written, produced and recorded in a week, The Warning in Mexico, AC in Canada. There is a live version from when The Warning were playing in LA and Ms Cara came on stage with them.

For as much as I love Metallica, after all it was The Warnings cover of this song back in 2014 that got me interested in them to begin with, I still definitely like this rendition far more than the original. They took James Hetfields original idea of this song as being a “lullaby” for his son and created a far more Surreal….. Darker….. Creepier….. Haunting, almost horror movie feel of a song with a powerful ending that gives homage to the original, what a touch of class. And Dany’s high note leading into the ending is EPIC! They absolutely killed it!
The more we hear from The Warning, the more I come to believe it is literally impossible for the sisters to put out anything subpar! And, this collaboration with Alissa Cara, who by the way is a Grammy award winning Canadian pop star with millions of followers was a perfect melding of pop and rock. Yet In my opinion, it is absolutely The Warning who bring the “hit factor” to this recreation of an iconic song. What a Bold Statement! But, I honestly did not expect anything less. It would not surprise me if this song/video were to receive a nomination for a Grammy award. Again, they killed it!
LONG LIVE THE VILLARREAL SISTERS aka THE WARNING!

Wow, I was was worried about what you would think about this re-imagining of the song featuring a pop singer, but am very happy you appreciated and enjoyed it. You’re right, very few other artists on the Blacklist album took this much liberty (and risk) with the original material. 👍😎

I also think that this is a wonderful cover of Enter Sandman. I have become a fan of The Warning over the last couple of years. I have been a huge fan of Lzzy Hale and Halestorm for many years. The Warning has been touring with Halestorm for the last few months. Recently Lzzy walked out on stage during The Warning's set and presented Dany with a Lzzy signature guitar. Lzzy has taken these girls under her wing and it is great to see. They will be in Lubbock, Texas in early October and I definitely want to go see them.

Alessia Cara was originally asked by Metallica for a song for the Blacklist. The Warning and Alessia Cara share the same international Management company (21 Entertainment, in Toronto) and they suggested the Collab. Famed Producer, Matt Squire flew to Monterrey, MX and worked with The Warning and worked with Alessia via Zoom in Canada. They did this whole thing, start to finish, including mixing by David Bendeth in NJ, in 8 days, to be in time to get it on the album!!! Just AMAZING!

Alessia Cara is a Canadian pop and R&B singer. She was also asked by Metallica to participate in the Blacklist album. She had no idea what to do but because she shares the same management company as The Warning contacted them for help. This song was written, arranged, and recorded in 1 week with Alessia in Canada and The Warning in Mexico (COVID19 made travel impossible). The video was show the same way- very quickly and with Alessia in Canada and The Warning shooting it just outside of Monterrey, Mexico. That is Why Alessia appears as a projection on the ways (because she wasn't there).

This is probably one of the best 're-imaginations' of this song, by any band ever! Not just a cover, but a complete re-write, keeping with the original theme of the song, and then some. You may also notice it's in the same key, and about the same tempo! It helps that they found a perfect filming location for the video (a burned out textile mill somewhere near Monterrey) and then chose to film in B&W for that extra spooky ambience. Then Pau coming into the 'prayer' with that pseudo-Exorcist head jerk, was brilliant! Since Alessia couldn't be there in person for the filming, they instead projected her on the walls for her parts, which added another dimension to this. No big surprise that this particular track ended up being the first one on the entire Blacklist album! I'm pretty sure this is what Hetfield and the rest of the guys from Metallica were shooting for when they told everyone to turn these songs inside out, upside-down, and backwards.. but *MAKE IT YOUR OWN!!!* Great review man, loved it, and love what they did with this!!🔥😍 🤘😎🤘

An amazing rendition of a iconic song. So much could go wrong with a complete overhaul and arrangement. Given that they had only a week to meet the Metallica deadline this was pure genius. Alessia's contribution was all done via zoom and the Internet as covid restrictions were very prominent at the time.

Yes, this is brilliant, never get tired of it. Lots of fun stories around this one, such as having Alessia record her part in Canada while The Warning remained in Monterrey due to Covid lockdown. And they only had a week to rearrange and record the whole thing before they had to submit it. Recorded at an old textile mill in Monterrey, it was home to large numbers of bats, for the creepy element you should appreciate. Allegedly they slept (mostly) while filming but there is a least a frame or two of the video with a bat visible. Not only is the re - imagining of the song great, but I love the video work too. Thanks, so glad you liked it. (Do they still call it a "frame" when entirely digital???")

Nice review, and a lot of insight. You're the first person who picked up on the T-shirt Alessia Cara was wearing; I certainly never spotted that.
Regarding what you were saying about Dany's singing, putting emphasis on different words: she has excellent diction and is very careful with her choice of what to accent, and I think you're right about how she emphasizes different words being part of of their style. They do have a very distinct vocal style, with two strong lead vocalists who are complementary, and Ale being a fine singer in her own right who prefers not to sing lead.
They have been playing this in concert, both as headliners and as support. They have made a few changes; Dany does the spoken part rather than Pau, apparently because Pau was having trouble with how the words interacted with the rhythm on the drums. While James Hetfield sounds creepy and Pau sounds eerie, Dany sounds desperate, almost in a panic. They are very proud of having been invited in on this and of what they did with it, with good reason. In my opinion that shows much more respect for Metallica than simply recording it and putting it on the shelf. Interestingly, Lzzy Hale recently gifted Dany a guitar, during a concert no less, and that guitar is a Gibson Explorer (Lzzy's -- and James Hetfields -- axe of choice). Dany has been using the guitar a few times per show, and she has almost always been using it for this (the other song she has regularly been using it on is Queen of the Murder Scene, where she needs to swap her guitar because she uses a different tuning for that song). During the riff at the end, Dany and Ale cross over on stage, so the people on Dany's side can see Ale close up and vice versa. Everyone loves that.
In LA, they managed to meet up with Alessia Cara and brought her out as a surprise for one of the shows, to thunderous applause. It was the first time she had ever performed at a rock concert, and she enjoyed it. They just recently -- it was released today -- had one of their songs (Choke) covered by Grandson and Zero 9:36, who are EDM/rap. That was partly a remix/resample and partly Grandson's and Zero's work, and they really enjoyed it (TW released an informal video of them rapping to the song in their basement studio).
I was reading a novel (one of the Honorverse ones by David Weber -- that's military SF; Honor Harrington is the overall protagonist of the series and a top admiral; it's loosely based on Horatio Hornblower), and Honor was singing a lullaby to her son that started with "hush little baby, don't say a word" and went on to different words. So of course that immediately evoked Dany belting out the lines as written in the book.
