Sounds kinda similar to people in Australia paying close to AU$200k for a Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, a car that's been in production and had minimal changes since 1984 lol

For a first vid, you hit the spot... 😉 Nice background, well presented... x
EDITED: Read some comments and you're obviously not a newbie, as I first thought.. What's your other channel...? (forgive a boomer)

Lmao 200k for a Def is wild, I have some relative who has a 2015 one (a 110) yet that thing feels sooo outdated 😂 you can feel the air going through the door gaps, there’s no central locking or electric windows, and the legroom in the rear seats is equivalent if not inferior to the legroom at the back of a Twingo 1 (but then you could fit almost an entire Twingo in the trunk behind, it’s definitely a utilitarian vehicle ). The first gear is suuuper short even in high range, and sometime it wobbles from side to side when entering the highway . I love that thing, don’t get me wrong, but it’ll never be worth even half that.

For that much you might as well get a g wagon instead. More luxurious, better reliability, looks way more superior.

If they can find the rubes to buy it, more power to them.
The rich have a long history of appropriating what's popular with the commoners.

People love the classic defender. But JLR can’t mass produce them since 2016 for obvious safety reasons. No way that tall brick passes pedestrian impact standards.
For the meantime if people want a defender you can buy used ones for whatever price they are worth. Or if you’re rich get the restomod one.

yeah there's a little bit of zoom flicker occasionally because the autofocus was having a hard time for some reason, will be fixed next time :)

Defenders are collectables. They are gaining values in the market.

I think if people are willing to pay stupid money for the "New Defender", then some would pay a bit more to be "OG". Retro Chique new money.

There’s a market for these types of vehicles (look up Monarch Defender, also about $200k) and even if it’s small, JLR wants a piece of it. Agree price seems inflated for what you get, but has never stopped the rich people from buying luxury goods to show off their wealth.

Considering MST can re-manufacture a Mk1/2 Escort from SCRATCH, brand new, from £70k to full Rally spec, makes this a ridiculous price. I adore Old Defender's and would LOVE to own one, but come on... Nearly £200k..!!! There's a place for these expensive retro's, like the "Automobili Amos Lancia Delta Futurista" etc, but a LANDY...!!! The true Defender lovers can never obtain that, so it's practically pointless...
(Can you tell I'm upset..!! Both stopping the OG production (despite the Grenadere guy offering to buy it) and this retro crap)

If you have to ask, it means you don't understand the car

I understand these resto-mods, basically, cars have become soulless, overweight and overdesigned chunks of metal, a lot of people on all ends of the scale are starting to recognize good design is not coming back, and since there's limited stock and the craftsmen required to "rebuild" are also going out of stock there's a need to pay a premium for quality workmanship since the quantities won't support the bottom line, resto-mods with warranties I'm all for it, I can't afford it now, but when I can ill have a few on the lot, there's still enough stock for the enthusiast and tinkers , old JLR Products require a lot of work and washing Oil From the driveway, I have one, so why not pay for a clean driveway for a few years?

I totally agree with all of your comment. I really love restomods as a concept. I still don't see how that corresponds to the kind of pricing we're seeing with this Defender Classic. Quality work is expensive, I get that, but I'm fairly confident you could buy a 2010 Defender and have a specialist do much of the same work without worrying about getting near a 6 figure spend.
A car's soul, and the soul of the car community, involves the owners and their stories as much as the vehicle itself, do we risk creating a new form of automotive soullessness by allowing even the most blue collar of enthusiast cars to become the exclusive domain of the exceptionally wealthy?
Its tough, because ultimately the market finds the "correct" values for these cars, and as I say in the video I'm sure JLR have bet right that people are willing to pay. But it makes me uncomfortable, and while I'm very happy to see cool cars restored and loved, it pains me to see cars like the Defender start to leave the grasp of normal, passionate people.
