I have had a 2014 for 5 years with over 150k miles on it and was looking to replace it but getting another Forrester wasnt even in the picture. My 14 was not a comfortable car to drive on road trips and the oil consumption issue always bothered me, so I started looking at the Outback. But I saw the new Wilderness at the dealer a couple weeks ago that was available to purchase, drove it and loved it. This isnt close to my 2014 and much better than the standard 2022 Forester models. I love it so far, hopefully all the issues I had with the 2014 ( oil consumption, transmission, cv axles, control arm bushings) will not be an issue. Im glad I bought it!
Good honest overall review on the Forester Wilderness. Picked up a granite grey Wilderness with HK/Nav last month $2K below MSRP which made it sweeter. Nearly every review says the same thing about the acceleration but I have no complaints. It was never designed to be a fast vehicle but I had no issues merging or jockeying for position on the road during my daily commute to work. More power is always welcomed but thats not why I bought the Wilderness. Light to medium trail duty with X-mode with decent mpg sealed the deal.
I am waiting for my Geyser Blue to be delivered in a couple weeks (oddly at the dealership you borrowed this one from I think) I’ve been watching a lot of Forester reviews in the meantime and this was one of the most detailed and informative. Really enjoyed it and am now even more impatient to get mine!
I hope you’re loving your Geyser Blue Forester Wilderness yet 1 year later. I’m very interested in same and same color. Is it much noisy at highway speeds ? 27 mpg’s or so ? How are the seats in summer, sweaty ? Needs a ventilated pad ? Ok winter with seat heat on ? I’m a little concerned summer comfort in that seat material. Thanks.
Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. ruclips.net/video/ZF_JtgJ7aKQ/видео.html No rock climbing for me, but adventuring, all day long. The exterior styling is great on the Forester Wilderness. I love it! I do like the analog gauges but I wish it had an analog fuel gauge. Another thing that’s missing is an available tow hitch (currently). SOA includes the increased tow capacity in their marketing for the Forester Wilderness, but how can we utilize that feature without any way to tow?! Just kinda strange to me…
Interesting, they run out of weird things right now, hopefully they will have that here soon because I also don't see it on the website. Since it has the oil cooler already, it should probably be good to tow with an aftermarket hitch but then the warranty won't like that as much. I'm sure it will pop up here soon but I will note this in my regular Forester review coming up!
@@Realistick Oh, it definitely is capable of towing the advertised 3k lbs, and like you said, it’s due to the added engine component cooling they’ve added to mitigate heat caused by the stressors that come with towing. No aftermarket tow kits are available from what I can tell. Plus I’d much rather go with an OEM for both the looks of it and for the warranty considerations. Aftermarket and even OEM tow hitches will likely negatively affect the departure angles, too, but the OEM is less likely to be a problem because of how well it appears to integrate into the bumper. I know at least one of the geyser blue pre-production/test vehicles had one installed, and it looked really nice! Go check out the Driving Sports TV’s first look videos. It shows the tow hitch installed, somewhere around the 1 min mark, I think. 😎👍🏻
@@acsnyder I talked directly to SOA about this issue, since I'm getting a Wilderness soon and want to put a bike hitch on it. They said that an OEM one is not available yet. There is no info as to when it will be. But a rumour on Reddit says sometime in March? The problem with aftermarket hitches is they eat into your ground clearance - probably not something you want if you have a Wilderness. The OEM hitch kits notch out the back bumper for the receiver and the rest is tucked up high. Unfortunately, if you want an OEM one, we'll have to wait. Sucks for mountain bikers!
Seeing it come by at 9:46 made me fall in love. Getting this color in a year or two. (Will be my third Forester) Currently enjoying a different type of car for now.
Good review as usual. But it's crazy that this most "outdoorsy" trim doesn't get heated rear seats or a heated steering wheel, even as options, while in Canada they're both standard... NY, New England, Michigan, Montana etc etc - all big Subaru areas - are just as cold as southern Canada. Really it's another example of Subaru stripping down features for the US market, their biggest. Obviously not a big deal for most buyers, but I've promised myself my next car is going to have a heated steering wheel, I've wanted one forever, so this Wilderness is off my list. Sucks because I like it so much otherwise.
My Geyser Blue FW should be here any day. I sprang for all 3 skid plates, the Wilderness mud flaps and had to bump up to a Falken Wildpeak 235/60-17 as that is the biggest I have seen in the spare tire location without airing down.
I love all the moving shots on this video, especially the ones you did on your skateboard in the parking lot! Now I want one but at $38K msrp, I just can't put up that kind of money for it. If they discount $3K, then maybe. My local dealer seems to have quite a few, probably because of that sticker shock....and no real leather!
Since I HATE the gloomy grey or death black interior colors, I opted to order a Crimson Red touring with brown leather interior. I’ll install a 1 inch lift, full under body skid plates, 3 inch Borla dual exhaust, K&N cold air intake, (increasing the hp, torque and mpg), and replace the factory tires with Falken Wildpeaks. I’m thinking about adding an additional oil and transmission cooler.
4:31 yeah those tires look ridiculous for the size/lift of this vehicle. The Wilderness Package does look way better in the Forester though. The Outback just looks like a lifted station wagon. I wish they had given the Forester the more powerful engine they put on the Outback.
Definitely looks like it skipped leg day, but if they did bigger tires the gas mileage would tank even more so it was good for Subaru to leave that one up to the owners. A turbo model would have been sweet to see too but she gets the job done!
Love everything about. I will not be buying it, because I can't live with 9 seconds 0-60. I currently own a 2012 Outback 3.6R, and probably will buy the Mazda CX-50 turbo next year. Just subscribed to your channel.
Yeah I have the '19. Ive been scared in a few situations of not being able to get to speed quickly enough. Cant blame you for that. But the gas savings is nice right now.
I ordered that exact Forester - same colour (except it’s the Canadian version). I don’t need the extra ruggedness but I loved the look. Canadians get the heated steering wheel but no TPS or HK stereo option. (I ordered the Rockford Fosgate upgrade)
For the price, the Outback Wilderness seems like a much better platform. If you can afford another $60/month or so it gets nearly twice the torque at half the rpm with it's turbo engine. A lot more power, nearly the same gas mileage. There really isn't any reason to get those over the outback other than looks. If you can afford one you can afford the other or you probably shouldn't be buying a new car if your budget is that tight.
To some people, the extra 4 grand is too much (the same goes for regular Outback v Forester conversations too). I'd personally take the Outback Wilderness too, but I very much see the argument for Forester Wilderness too. Outside of affordability, long term dependability on the far more simple power plant of the Forester is am upside (if you don't mind the power), this has better angles for offroad and is more practical for that purpose all around, they have completely different driving positions with the Forester feeling more SUV like with better visibility. I might do a video comparing the two when I get the chance!
I honestly love the look of this front end. The rear could use some tweaking. The black panel between the headlights makes it seem kind of cheap/dinky, just imo. If i got this I would try to replace that panel with the body colour, or wrap it. They also should have tinted the white part of the rear tailights like the crosstreks have. And get a black exhaust tip.
Great review btw! I just bought a '22 Forester Touring and love the idea of the Touring model, but just not digging the look. Too much plastic on the front bumper in my opinion. Depending on the color you pick, it's more apparent. If I was going to get the Wilderness model, I'd definitely get the gray color.
Front and rear torsen lsd diff along with locking center diff, from earlier WRX would make it close rival to Bronco or Jeep Trailhawk as the fake electronic brake torque is reactive than active torsen rear and front diff.
Agreed, but that would drive cost way up, there is one brand that makes an awesome Subaru locker for the rear that I'd definitely indulge in if you were wanting to really compete with those kinds of trucks!
@@jonathanromero1753 the center console where you would rest your arm the material after one year started to crunch up and the radio had to be replace twice . Also when I had the headlights set on auto and I would drive in a dark tunnel they would turn off . The steering was loose no feed back . The outback XT just is better built from my experience owning a forester and outback . Hopefully they improved the forester 2022 because the 2019 forester was horrible.
I will say that the cloth seats on my driver side did take a beating pretty quick. Thankfully havent had the same radio problems as you had. I have the slightly upgraded stereo system. Maybe for the better when it comes to durability.
I LOVE MY GLACIER WHITE ONE! gave it an inch lift and swapped to some bigger tires! My buddy has a 4runner and is shocked that I can keep up on the climbs
Wilderness seems to have advantages even if you never plan to take it off road, but the gas mileage is a problem. Just wondering how much mpg you could save by switching to All Season/All Weather tires...
I have a Touring ordered but now I am wondering…I drive a lot in West Virginia - Lots of paved winding mountain roads with long climbs. In your experience do you think I would be better off with the Wilderness? Our drive is kind of steep and unpaved.
Hey Tyler, great review of the Forester Wilderness. I've found one coming in February some time. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the Harmon Kardon option. But the dealer said they can install a Rockford Fosgate upgrade which basically upgrades the 2 speakers in the front door and adds an amplifier. It is listed on the SOA website and would also be covered under the warranty. But is it any good?
Thank you, yes, Subaru offers it on all of their cars and I'd recommend it if you can't get the Harmon Kardon, just don't expect bass like what you would get with the subwoofer!
I test drove both forester wilderness (which I bought ) and vs outback XT, TBH, I more prefer forester wilderness, outback drive more like a car, and turbo boost kinda delay so bad, push all the way up to 4000 rpm the turbo seems give some kicks but out to 5000-6000 the boost dropped down, and I have drove it more than 1 hour on varieties of road conditions, for people who wants to buy foresters plz go for it, for people who wants to have turbo , please go check other brand especially German brand or manual WRX, 2.4 T is not powerful at all I would just say adequate
Disappointed with the second wilderness model. If you want better performance, the same dual x mode and a cheaper vehicle that pretty much the same thing, buy the Crosstrek sport
Did you miss the raised suspension, improved approach/departure, increased final drive ratio with low ratio lock (exclusive to Forester Wilderness), and AT tires(which could be bigger but it hurts mpg more), among various other small upgrades that crosstrek sport has none of. Plus the thing is far more practical too. This is much much more capable than any Crosstrek, and I like the Crosstrek too. You get what you pay for with both of them.
Great review Tyler, quality and details are increasing, that joke about a ton of shit got me lol I once helped my uncle with filling a Subaru’s trunk with a ton of shit(for agricultural purposes ofc). I like the car and the segment too, but last few weeks I’m looking at Honda civic mk8(2.2 cdti) or Pontiac vibe GT/matrix xrs( I wish i could find one). Happy holidays mate 🍷 Cheers ♥️
Thank you! The engine in those xrs models and vibe GTs are awesome, just make sure they are well maintained. I have a video coming out on the mk5 golf/rabbit next week and I highly recommend those too!
It would have to have turbo charged eng. ! W/o it , it just brings you back to 1990's. The four banger is noisy inside the cabin as can be expected and embarrassing when accelarating
I can't give you an exact number, but I thi k tread pattern and weight are a big factor too. My truck has some mild AT tires on it and it hurt highway gas mileage by a couple mpg. City is usually not as affected by it
@@gemininy1211 I agree. Rather tinker toy look, needs bigger tires to fill in better. But cheap o me, probably just get used to it until tires are worn out.

An interesting take haha, it takes chances for sure! I kind of like it but I also enjoy weird stuff. Would definitely throw some bigger tires on there if I could
Haha and for 5 grand more you could have gotten a Mustang GT with 460 horsepower. Also, maybe that's why Subaru built the WRX? And they built this for people that care about Off road prowess and practicality. What's laughable is comparing the engine specs of a WRX and a small SUV, or comparing the engine specs of a Mustang GT and WRX for that matter ;) congrats on the WRX though, the last gen was a blast!

I have a Touring ordered but now I am wondering…I drive a lot in West Virginia - Lots of paved winding mountain roads with long climbs. In your experience do you think I would be better off with the Wilderness? Our drive is kind of steep and unpaved.
I think either will work well enough. If youre not flooring it, the difference is going to be minimal and hard to notice once you're really rolling.
Great review. Can you do VW Tiguan SE
Thanks
I can't do another tiguan video at the moment but I do have a video out on the 22 tiguan sel where I talk a lot about the se and s!
@@Realistick Thanks Tyler!
Forester looks like it has a better approach angle
This is Rob. Natalie is my wife. Anyways love your channel can you do a GLK. Please!
Thank you, I might look into that the next time I can get ahold of one!
It looks great and loves the styling even though looks like a toy
Great review Tyler, quality and details are increasing, that joke about a ton of shit got me lol I once helped my uncle with filling a Subaru’s trunk with a ton of shit(for agricultural purposes ofc). I like the car and the segment too, but last few weeks I’m looking at Honda civic mk8(2.2 cdti) or Pontiac vibe GT/matrix xrs( I wish i could find one).
Happy holidays mate 🍷
Cheers ♥️
Thank you! The engine in those xrs models and vibe GTs are awesome, just make sure they are well maintained. I have a video coming out on the mk5 golf/rabbit next week and I highly recommend those too!
that fax leather is standard..?...no cloth?
For the Wilderness, yes.
Why are we not getting this in Australia!!!!!!!!!!
Great question actually
Why didn't they include a trailer hitch
They never do, and the accessory is currently "coming soon" so hopefully in the next few months.
It would have to have turbo charged eng. ! W/o it , it just brings you back to 1990's. The four banger is noisy inside the cabin as can be expected and embarrassing when accelarating
Is that the metallic grey?
Yes!
Noise is the main problem with the Forester. Otherwise, this is nice.
I haven’t noticed any excessive noise in my Wilderness while driving. That’s what you’re talking about, right? Cabin noise?
How is the real-world gas mileage?
A good question for the forums!
If you make the tires wider how many MPG are loss?
I can't give you an exact number, but I thi k tread pattern and weight are a big factor too. My truck has some mild AT tires on it and it hurt highway gas mileage by a couple mpg. City is usually not as affected by it
@@Realistick the wilderness' wheels aren't bad! But the tires look tiny compared to the body
@@gemininy1211 I agree. Rather tinker toy look, needs bigger tires to fill in better. But cheap o me, probably just get used to it until tires are worn out.
I just want a manual for god sake 🤬
Pls put timing
What?
@@Realistick in your description or in first comment you can put times so that we can skip to tha part we like , see nowadays videos of carwow channel for example👍
I love the Forester wilderness but HATE the old dated crappy gloomy grey interior, so I refuse to buy one.
Yeah, 9 second 0-60 is a no for me. Our 2018 Forrester XT is much much faster.
Yeah she's a slow girl haha. Know from my '19 Forester after a V6 coup.
2.4 L??? Not 2.5??

Subaru Lies about the mpg. Figure on getting 3-5 mpg less on the freeway and 1-2 less city driving
People sometimes have difficulty getting the epa numbers in turbo cars, but I don't hear complaints elsewhere.
@@Realistick our Outback with the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine only gets 28-29 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75 mph.
Even when we’re driving only 65 mph, it still only gets 29 mpg.
If we would have known that, we would have bought a Toyota Venza or a Rav AWD
@@Doc1855Is that based off of tank mpg or the car's own reading? Also, elevation, temperature, humidity, wind have effects on it, as does speed, I'm surprised you don't see an improvement at 65 mpg. Ive never run into that problem and my parent's 21 Crosstrek exceeds the rating notably if I'm easy on it. There might something off with your specific car or another external factor?
@@Realistick I go by how many miles are driven to the amount of fuel consumed.
We have neighbors who own a Crosstrek and they higher mpg than is rated.
On our Outback we never get above 29 on the freeway.
Our mpg does go down to 24-25 mpg while driving on MT freeways with the cruise set on 85 mph.
We have a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4 liter V6 and we constantly get 24-25 mpg on the freeway in MT with the cruise set on 85, but I’ve installed a K&N intake and a 3 inch FlowMaster exhaust. I’m sure those 2 mods have helped bc before the mods, we only got 19 mpg on the freeway
I wish the front didn’t look like it’s smiling so much.
Yuck
The Subaru Wilderness is the poor man's Toyota 4 Runner.
Or for someone who wants off road capability with almost double the mpgs of a 4Runner
Back seats of Forester were quite spacious compared to a friend's '17 4Runner. Gas mileage a huge plus these days too.
Huge majority of $Runners and Jeeps never see off road. This option gives them the option, with great handling and visibility. The others, at 6'3", I feel like I am in a small car with little visibility
@@ME-gr8hz My son is 6'5" and he drives a Subaru. In fact he is about to start a 500 mile trip with his family.
Wow! Kinda looks as if hit a log laying across the road and bent the front up in a "totaled" position.
I knew some former crackheads that had an old MDX with tiny tires that reminds me of this one's tire to wheel opening ratio.
Not a fan.
An interesting take haha, it takes chances for sure! I kind of like it but I also enjoy weird stuff. Would definitely throw some bigger tires on there if I could
I do not like the cheap plastic looking external features and the wilderness logo embossed on the head rest. It’s coming across as trying too hard.
$36K and you only get 182 horsepower. Laughable. I got a fully loaded 2021 WRX for $31K and that thing has 268 horsepower and a lot of torque.
@@Realistick, all of you’ve done was further support my initial assertion, which is a vehicle selling for $36K with low horsepower. As such, I’ll say it again: Laughable. Thank you.
@@firstnamelastname3558 I don't think you understand that I was making a joke by mentioning the Mustang, as it doesn't compete with a wrx, like the Forester doesn't compete with the WRX. 90 percent of the cars in the class have similar figures and comparing the engine specs between a sports sedan and a family suv is nonsensical. ₜₕₐₙₖ ᵧₒᵤ
@@Realistick, I understood fully. A price is a price; and, at $36K you better believe most people will expect more than 182 horsepower.
@@firstnamelastname3558 sales figures heavily disagree
This car is so ugly that I stopped watching half way. Just couldn't look at it. Keep buying ugly cars and contribute to underachieving manufacturers.
I don't think any Forester has ever been a looker, I like it though, much better than the cars that use insane grills to make them seem sporty. This at least has purpose
@@Realistick True no Subaru as a matter of fact has ever been easy to look at. But this one took it to a whole new lever of ugliness. I will feel awkward to be seen driving this.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ever hear that saying?
@@ofcbob6391 for something this ugly really never heard of.
@@kizo172 it’s only your opinion after all.
Losing 5 mpg was the killer. We don't really go offroad since we have an old 4Runner for that. That 5 mpg adds up on longer trips.
