I'm impressed by the market force displayed here. Obviously, the gear is top shelf quality (I have 2 JHS pedals and enjoy them very much!) but the thing that sells these pedals before anyone has heard them is the ethos put forth by JHS and the contagious fun they have doing the show. Don't stop what you're doing and Merry New Year!

I had a Rangemaster in the 60s. I bought a Hofner Galaxie from a guy and he threw it in for free. I used it back then just as a treble booster for my mail order Linear 30w amp and home made 2x12 cabinet. I threw it away in the 80s as it had been in my gig back for years unused..... Back then no gear was seen as a 'collectors item', just tools to do a job.

Wow. I guess I kind of knew on some level that JHS could be described as "successful", but really I had no idea. Even speaking as someone who buys pedals, and owns several that were Josh Scott recommendations on this channel, I would still describe a germanium treble booster as a "very niche product". To sell out a 700 unit run in ten minutes...that's quite the flex.

Hi Josh! Back in 1997 I started making Rangemaster copies. Nobody here in the States knew what it was. I had to educate people on them. It’s funny about the transistors.. I had bought a quantity of OC44’s and 1/2 of them had noise and low hfe. The chap the U.K. That sold them to me said that they were all good and he would exchange any bad ones for ,a yeah, sure. You can basically use any germanium transistor. Personally I like the NTK275’s as to my ears they sound great & better than the OC71.
Dallas was a division of Arbiter which also built Sound City amps and they had the retail store and they had Drum City that was around the corner.
Anyway, I built around 1,000 between 1997 to 2009. It was hard to build those, fix clients guitars & amps and be in a touring band, so I let the Rangemasters go.. it seemed like the public had lost interest for a while. I also tried to Trademark the name which was a lot more work than I realized. Good luck with these! I was building them one at a time.
    Regards; Don Butler/ Toneman, Inc.

Let's be real. Not a single person bought it for the purpose of using it. It sold out in 8 minutes. They bought it to "try" it. Because there's no time to wait and watch reviews and shootouts and decide if it's worth it.
Then either they will use it, or they will sell it for whatever it's going for on reverb.
And I know you asked people not to scalp it. But the thing is inherently worth more than you sold it for once you are out of them. So it's hardly scalping.. it's just a rare item and that's what it's worth.
My guess is some people will list it for $1000, but the general used price will end up being like $400.

    • @TheDilligan
      @TheDilligan 2 года назад +1

@@christopherwade4626 Not really. I bought one. I have no idea if it's any good or if it's for me. No one does. They sold out 8 minutes after they were announced.
So either people bought it specifically to sell it with no interest in playing it, or they are gonna do the same as me.. Try it out.. If it's good maybe I'll keep it. If it isn't for me, I'm gonna sell it.
If someone got it as a gift, then the person they got it for doesn't know anything about it either and will have to make that same decision.
There's only 700 and I doubt anyone bought it on accident. So it's just a logical assumption.

@@TheDilligan well, no idea if it'll sound well with my Sky King and JC77 amp...I have great MIAB pedals to stack in front, I have tweed style on my Sky King. If it was an Imperial MK2 Tone King I wouldnt have gotten it. But theres no time to think, given it's limited. I will full around with it, see if i like it...if not then i guess it's time to pay that credit card bill for the other pedals i bought this year. So same as you, will try it and if it doesn't work out just sell it. But I will be trying it in all matters in a studio for a day before i decide.

Probably saved me $249, and just as important inspired me to go back to the garage workshop and start sorting thru the hundreds of Soviet germanium transistors I got from Ukraine before the war started. I have a kit for building a Rangemaster clone and that seems a better option than giving the clown on Reverb $800 for the JHS Germanium Boost that he's flipping 🤣

Hi Josh, the Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster was the most surprising pedal I ever cloned, I was building it for my guitar player who never loved it enough, I am a play the Bass and It became one of the three pedals I always have in my pedalboard, together with a MOSFET booster (my take of the SHO) and a tube preamp I designed from scratch. I keep all of them on for my clean tone and turn off the Treble booster for my saturated sound. I wish I managed to put my hands ( actually my feet ) on a JHS Germanium boost to try your take on the circuit.
Why don't you make a bass guitar demo?
    Ciao!

I would be bummed about these selling out so quickly if I didn't own an Analogman Beano Boost. A good treble booster is not something to be without. They do awesome things paired with your favorite (low wattage especially) tube amp. Easily my favorite way to get drive/distortion.
