My first-ever visit to Chinatown was back in 1974 as a university student. I was studying Mandarin. My friends and I went straight to Hop Kee. I've never forgotten how good it was. I had several friends from Hong Kong tell me that even there, Hop Kee was known as a great place to eat in NYC Chinatown.
I love Chinatown! I had visited before but this weekend we actually went past Canal St and down Mott St for the first time and it was amazing! We ate at Wo Hop this weekend!
I remember back in the day when AK hadn't shown his face and people would hunt for mirrors like 1:07 just to see how this guy looks like and his camera. Also, there's no roast chicken for sale on the Chinese BBQ window, it's soy marinated chicken and "white skinned chicken" which goes well with a ginger oil sauce. 8:11 The most unique recipe from Hong Kong style "Cha Chang Tang" (which in Cantonese means tea restaurant) is the baked spaghetti and baked rice dishes, also unique in HK style is cooking western macaroni pasta inside Chinese style chicken soup, topped with ham slices and sunny side up. These dishes are unique fusion that came from Hong Kong's colonial times.
Thanks for the clarification on the "roast chicken". I was thinking the same. AK knows a lot but not everything. Then again, he doesn't come off as someone who does. That is why we love him.
I haven't been down here since the start of this pandemic. I used to walk down here everyday in 2019 after college. It's such a nice change of scenery in NYC.
It means "big fortune" in Chinese. When you make a English sign you can either just make out how it sounds, make one that says what it means, or something completely different. I have seen all of them but the last kind are the most entertaining.
There was a guy in that Mandarin Court place thats now in a Malaysian Singapore someplace on Bayard right past the Eyeglasses place. Mei Lah Wah on the corner of Bayard used to have the old guys and white labcoats serving up the steamed buns. Watching and commenting lol
This video will get good views I think. Cause food is life and we love to peek in windows 🙂 You can do if you wish a live with food review of your best dishes in one of these places. On a nice table outside where you eat and chat with us. (like Ariel does sometimes) I know you did before. More is better :)) We also love to see you doing fun activities with your friends and in this way you can enjoy your time while working. 😉
Great video and nice walking tour!Thank you for showing around Manhattan Chinatown in New York.Greetings and warm regards from Amsterdam,De Zeedijk,Chinatown,The Netherlands!Stay Safe!
The shops in some other locations of Chinatown have mostly closed down I think, since your latest video showed barely enough shops still open for business. But some of these shops in Mott St. might probably be still be open since I saw them featured recently in Fung Bros Cheap Eats in Chinatown series.
I think those ‘Japanese’ restaurants are really Chinese owned. Like when you see kimchi on the menu, it’s Korean owned. Hope to see more restaurant tours like this. It makes us want to go there and eat.
It’s taking 3hrs to watch a half video from reading menus on pause!!!
Awesome video!!!
