  • SINOPSIS: film that tells the story of three childhood friends, Kitty (Merle Oberon), Alan (Fredric March), and Gerald (Herbert Marshall) who come of age in England during the First World War. Kitty Vane, Alan Trent, and Gerald Shannon have been inseparable friends since childhood. Both Alan and Gerald are in love with Kitty, who in turn has been infatuated with Alan her entire life.
Gerald and Alan are drafted into World War I. They return home for ten days, during which time Alan proposes to Kitty and she joyously accepts. Despite his own love for Kitty, Gerald gives the couple his blessing. However, the newly engaged couple's happiness is cut short when Gerald and Alan are ordered back to the front the very next day. Kitty and Alan search for somebody to marry them, but there is not enough time. They decide they do not need to marry officially, and agree to spend the night together before Alan must return to the war.

@@karenhill3970Me too! The movies today are full of one liners, and quick witted lines that fall flat. There is no development of the characters, and they are unlikeable. Morals have been lost and the scenes are too graphic with nudity and gruesome visuals that leave me feeling ashamed to have witnessed them, besides the foul language and the use of God's Holy name used repeatedly as a cuss word that hurts my soul to hear it. So, I decided to never see any of them again. I am so grateful for these beautiful and wholesome movies that have a good moral story and fine respectable characters.

I’ve always voted Vivian Leigh as the most beautiful woman of her day in Hollywood and England and around the world! 👩🏻 But Merle Oberon is either a very close second, if not a tie! Both actresses were so talented as well, and both began receiving starring roles in film approximately the same time.....Oberon in 1933 (“The Private Life If Henry VIIII”) and Leigh receiving four small roles beginning in 1935, then her first big role in “ Fire Over England”, in 1937. I’m sure I’ve seen every film both of them have starred in! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The casting of each role in this gem of a film is perfect.....even those playing the Aunts and Grandmothers! As far as the male leads, as a woman I don’t know WHICH of the two leading men I would have chosen. 😍😍 Great story line as well.

No, I think England was aware and nervous about what was happening in Europe and Germany. Didn't Hitler come to power in 1933? By 1936, he was bold enough to bomb civilians in Guernica, Spain in cooperation with Franco. I think the purpose of these movies was to get the population ready emotionally for the build up that was coming.

I wish the print was better, but I'd rather have it a little fuzzy than not at all. I'd like to say it doesn't matter but the truth is an excellent print makes all the difference. A classic tearjerker - a bit too sentimental for my taste (I prefer Bette Davis in DARK VICTORY). But a great team, from the three main actors to director Franklin, screenwriter Hellmann, Gregg Toland's cinematography, Alfred Newman's score, and Richard Day's Oscar winning art direction.
The young man who interrupts the meeting and later apologizes to March looked awfully familiar. That's Douglas Walton, who although never an A list actor had significant roles in a number of major films of the 30 and 40s, including CAVALCADE (an early Best Picture winner), THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (as Percy Shelley), MARY OF SCOTLAND, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, NORTHWEST PASSAGE, SCARFACE, THE LETTER, MURDER MY SWEET, and THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY.

First, the funny stuff: the sound effects guys back then were probably dying to use a new sound- high-pitched 'outer space' sound of the falling bombs - given the cast, I wonder how it made it into a good film. At 11:41, the trees (Topiaries) in the background look a lot like some in a Dr. Suess book, and a big tree to the right of them looks like a 6 year-old drew it. First rate acting and a good story, too.
