Horowitz plays with so much composure and grace. And his emotions are not very explicit, but full of subtlety and elegance. I aim to play like that one day.
In some of his interviews he expressed that he didn't like when pianists performed with a lot of facial expressions or physical emotionality and found it distasteful.
That’s very much what I prefer too; to each their own.. the greatest technical pianist alive, MA Hamelin, also plays with this same kind of composure and brilliance; completely easy at the keyboard even in the most difficult repertoire such as Alkan’s Concerto for Solo Piano, all of the Godovski etudes, some of his Szimanovski recitals, etc.. Some other super virtuosi who maintain this kind of composure and who are alive nowadays include, but are very much not limited to: Pollini, Argerich, Barenboim, Pace, Rzevski, Powell, Henck, Libetta, etc..
As far as the musical expression is concerned, his emotions are VERY explicit! And this is the point. I just saw videos with Neuhaus, Goldenweiser and Oborin - all sitting very quiet and with almost no "facial expression". This is the tradition, where belcanto on the piano comes from. These huge movements of the face or the body often destroy the sound, but in times of television people mix them up with "expression". Too many people listen with their eyes instead of the ears. 😉
As a huge fan of Arthur Rubinstein, who is a completely different pianist from Horowitz, I was never inteterested to get to know his performances. But once I did it, I found a new world. Horowitz makes music shine with his fingers and he gives a different touch and taste to music. Its astonishing
Robert Perry : all the elegies for violin-piano or violoncelle-are divin also j think about elegie op-24 by Gabriel Faure or elegies of E Grieg Lizst in not alone composer with a divin masterpiece
J’ai 51 ans, et je suis une personne non-voyante. Quand j’étais adolescent, je l’ai entendu jouer désert de Chopin. Je me disais que c’était un pianiste magnifique à encourager l’amitié entre les peuples.
The grace and composure that this is played with is just mind-blowing. Subtle intricacies just add such depth and beauty. I'm in love with Horowitz's playing, I have been since the first time I heard him. It's like listening to singers, lots of people can but not all have that 'magic' something... He has the magic in abundance!
As long as i absolutely ADORE Rubinstein and LOVE Martha Argerich, Horowitz is the Greatest piano player of all time imho. And the piano, such a magic instrument, i see, i touch the souls of these 3 giants. Rubinstein, such a good, simple and nice man; Martha, such a complex woman, with her emotions free, eventually, only when she sits and starts to play; Horowitz, you can feel All the things This Man’s soul had to struggle With during his lifetime, you get the precise, exactly feeling of a Man Who sees himself on his own when life puts you on your limit, and let you know Who you really are.
Beautifully said! Everything Horowitz ever lived through resonates in every note he plays. It accounts, perhaps, for the incredible feeling of aliveness that permeated his concerts (I heard him live five times) and comes through particularly in his late recordings.
At first listen, Horowitz seems to play in a matter-of-fact manner. But notice all the color and variation within that style. Like an actor not wasting any words, but mesmerizing nonetheless.
His mastery of this piece is so clear to the trained ear. Those ascending arpeggios are so mysterious and delicate in how they add to the sound. Many play it purely to tempo but Horowitz knows deep down what makes this piece really stand out and nails it to perfection.
He is/was who I held in much admiration- a paragon that even Rachmaninoff liked how Horowitz performed his compositions. Talk about an honor! Yet this is Lizst - a Romantic favorite. 😎👍🏻🎼
Merci pour cette mise en ligne:) La première fois que je l'ai visionnée, j'ai cru qu'il enlevait une poussière sur une touche...(0:30). Jamais entendu une telle cristallinité du son, à pleurer de bonheur.

I agree, the world needs listen to some REAL music. If you ask any classical musician then they will tell you how pop music and rock music is so easy and in Chinese we like to call them “low” music.
It also angers me how top opera singers are shocked and impressed when they heard Chinese opera for the first time but when I go on RUclips. The comment sections stated that they sound like “cat dying sounds”? The world needs to improve their ears.
He changes the register of some bass notes, and adds other bass notes. He treats the last note of measure 13 like a sixteenth note. He alters the right hand rhythm in measure 33. Are these mistakes, or part of Horowitz’s personal arrangement of the piece? Whatever they are, they seem like improvements to me over the original score.
I still dont hear what people hear with horowitz. Im trying. Its too fast for me and the dynamics and phrasing in general just have no emotion for me. Aged 40 (last tried age 30)
nezkeys79 Keep trying. And I don’t mean that flippantly. Horowitz is not everyone’s cup of tea, but nevertheless there is something tremendous and subtle to the ears of many. Listen to different composers he recorded. Scarlatti, Scriabin.
@@DAS1962 This is my least favorite type of response I think; I see it on lots of responses to classical performance critiques here. Horowitz wasn't a child whose self-esteem we have to boost, and him playing this piece is not some achievement over adversity that Zoltano is denigrating. Basically, your response is the sort of response that would make sense if Zoltano's comment was directed at, say, a 'normal' 87 year old that learned the piece and is playing it somewhere, and we can say, "Wow, what dedication and achievement at that age." On that sort of video, a comment nitpicking the interpretation would indeed be in poor taste. But Horowitz was a great master, and his playing is art, and all art is open to criticism -- note I don't mean criticism with strong negative connotations, it's just that it's all subjective. To some people's ears, the playing is too rushed. Okay, fair enough. By responding the way you did, you are (unintentionally) actually being disrespectful to Horowitz; you are removing it from the realm of great art that is open to critique and placing it in the realm of something like a senior center talent show, where we should all just be amazed he was able to play it at all. Furthermore, it's silly to claim that the only people who can have opinions on whether they like a master's interpretation of a piece are those who can play it better than the master can. Imagine if every time someone said something like "I find Beethoven's 5th to be not to my liking," someone replied "Oh yeah?? Well show us YOUR symphony then, smartass!"

Feels so magical, this small miracle across time.
With this piece, Liszt out-Chopin-ed Chopin himself. And only Horowitz could evoke the magic.
fantastic
Thank you! Beautifully played.
Maravilloso. Sensibilidad. Sin ademanes superfluos. Con las dos manos pegadas al teclado. Sublime. Sencillez donde no existe. Un maestro.
特に難しい曲ではないけれど、自然に、丁寧に弾く、そして音楽が瑞々しい。左手の4の指のコントロールはやはり天賦のものなのでしょう。
