American motorsport fan here, predominantly an IndyCar fan but F1 is second on my list. Americans into road racing generally have a hard time engaging with F1. The spectacle is incredible, but the racing product is seen as mediocre at best. I'm an engineer to the development is amazing to me and I wouldn't consider myself the average racing consumer here. Also plenty of stories from American drivers such as Conor Daly who tried to break in with incredible American ladder series success to have team owners tell them that nobody cares. It feels to us that team principals have long disrespected American motorsport and it leaves people wary of F1. If Andretti is allowed to compete, that could serve as an olive branch to bring folks back in and start paying some attention. If not, a generation of potential fans is going to be lost. And when the Drive to Survive bubble inevitably breaks, F1 will be left with very little American viewership.
"Olive branch" is the exact term I was trying to think of, haha! What better way to engaged a disenfranchised US motorsport audience, than to bring one of your most historic teams to Formula 1. MASSIVE opportunity, surely?
@@TommoMcCluskey The only bigger get would be Roger Penske, who seems to have a "been there, done that" attitude toward F1. A few other team owners with similar levels of clout here too but then a rapid fall off. Andretti has only been a team for around 20 years, since Michael was ending his driving career, but they're amassed quite a resume in that time. Including something I don't see these team principals discuss - Andretti has an FIA World Championship via Formula E.
Very well put together argument. I have literally seen no one oppose Andretti joining the grid apart from the team principles. I think a lot of European fans would love to have some of that raw American energy in F1!
@@Simonbengtsson92😂😂 raw American? Stop the jokes. There is no American driver with enough license points other than SARGEANT…. Let theAmerican young talents show themselves in F2… let’s see how ‘great’ they are…
Like you mentioned, the Rolex 24 at Daytona result was 1. Porsche Penske Motorsports, 2. Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing, 3. Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti. I also watched an interview with the GM CEO before that race and he was over the rainbow enthusiastic about GM's car and powerplant efforts. I think GM and Andretti are more than up to the F1 challenge.
I think we should have more than 11 teams. We're at a point now where F1 has become really competitive and has become far more sustainable for smaller teams than ever before. How many great young drivers get passed up for a drive because there arent any extra seats available further down the field? We could have 2-6 extra drivers in the sport in the next couple of years and yet we have to sit here and watch F1 moan about money and greed.
I believe the rules agrred upon in the past was for 12 teams max on the grid. We have 10, one of which is trying to not look like a clone for Red Bull, and another trying to buy as much from Ferrari as possible. Then we have Andretti who paid the sign up fee, making their own body kit and components, but nah Hass is better???
At the end of the day, the teams really shouldn't have a say at this point. They had their say when they signed the Concorde Agreement, and that agreement set out space for additional teams. If they've changed their mind, they can try and negotiate that away when the next agreement is signed. But right now, they should be following the rules they agreed to.
I don't have a say from a legal stand point as only the FIA and Liberty have a say, but one would guess that they are leaning on Liberty trying to coerce them into blocking their entry. End of the day if Liberty and FIA say yes, there is nothing the teams can do about it. As you say, the Concorde agreement is binding.

Tommo a long but considered reply, I've not read all 388 comments so far but here's my take. Andretti are a big organisation but they've never had to do the R&D, Design and Manufacture of any cars in their entire history, they are a race team running essentially 'Spec' cars built and supplied by other manufacturers. The step up from that to F1 is huge, with massive lead times for equipment and resource and capabilities they don't currently have (with respect to the likes of Nick Chester and his team). Showing a model (only exterior surfaces) in a wind tunnel is not itself success, the design is based on the FIA rule book so anyone could build one this is a far cry from a chassis, crash structure etc... and the aero required to be successful. They will have to start with Alpine (Renault) PU which likely also means their gearbox, rear suspension, rear crash structure, electronics and control electronics as GM have stated they won't provide a PU until at least 2027. Moving from an Alpine PU architecture to a GM one in 2027 (after 1 season) would be a big piece of work, very costly and a setback - remember once they declare a start they are governed by Cost Cap for both chassis and PU development so making a change from Alpine to GM PU would be a big but not smart move. This is why teams have already signed long-term PU deals for security. I feel sad for all the criticism of Haas, they have been up and down but at least Gene put his (and it is his) money where his mouth is, started from scratch and with their partnership with Dallara and Ferrari have produced some good cars and bad cars, but given how tight the F1 field is they are only a fraction of a percent of race time per lap off being a mid-field team, tyre degradation killed them year as did some poor FIA decisions otherwise they would have finished 9th or 8th! I don't hear the same criticism of Sauber who have been in F1 for 31 years and have one of the world's most wealthiest individual as main shareholder! Harsh but Andretti have only won the Formula E championship in recent years despite their pedigree and all the championships they compete in and that was a Spark Racing Technologies chassis with Porsche powertrain (itself Williams Advanced Engineering batteries and Lucid Motors Electronics etc...). I also think that their constant diversification makes them weaker. F1 teams with the exception of McLaren do F1, even Mercedes-AMG Sport divested itself from Formula E. So in summary I can't see that Andretti would be successful and apart from bringing in more sponsors for themselves not move F1 further on for the foreseeable future, but I don't object to them trying but they must understand the challenge ahead of them and the impact that F1 will have on their other operations and reputation. Finally a comment about those teams which didn't make it through the FIA selection process despite very credible bids, people and resource, we are yet to find out why Andretti did make it and others didn't and of course there could be comeback legally on that too.
@@Redlingstein Thanks for your comment, now Dan Towriss is running the show and has rased more capital the project might move forward with more support from GM. Also 8 months since my post Haas have performed well this year and their technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing will further strengthen their capabilities, so all the media negatively against Gene Haas was unfounded.
Michael Andretti was alongside Ayrton Senna for the 1993 season, poor results overall but a podium finish in his last race before Mika Häkkinen replaced Michael for the final 3 races of the season.

Also, A splash of yellow would go nicely on the grid, A DHL/Gainbridge collab perhaps, Andretti DHL F1 team sounds good lol, Atleast it’s not Visa Cash App RB F1 team lol
My question, and big question is If they aren't an official entrant, can't they spend what they like on R&D, are they limited by the budget cap? If not then well well well....
Well if they aren’t officially on the roster, they can go ham on their car and do as much development as they want, and they should, if they get accepted and F1 bans their car, that will be on another level of pettiness
If Andretti can't get into F1 after everything they've shown about how serious they are, then F1 is basically just saying new teams are not allowed to join no matter what.
Formula One and Liberty love to talk about expanding the US audience but refuses to allow an American team with factory support from one the largest American motor companies that would actually be successful into the championship is incredibly infuriating, especially after the insane decision with the time of the LVGP being at 1 am in the eastern US, absolutely blows my mind
I think it would be interesting to see how they would design a car around the new engine for 2026 compared to the other teams adapting to the new engine with some adjustments
you have to remember, Liberty Media is an entertainment company, nothing is uncultivated. They are spending time getting the interest growing in Andretti, I expect F1/Liberty Media will announce the Andretti Cadillac entry for 2026 sometime towards the end of this year/ beginning of next . They, as entertainers, will not want a long time between announcement and unveiling to keep the interest at its peak
It's kind of funny how Gene Haas buys so many parts from Ferrari when his business is literally CNC machines that could probably make most of those parts.
F1 team clearly don't want another team decreasing the percentage they already receive. Also, the teams are probably regretting letting Hass onto the grid, as they bring little to nothing to the bottom line in comparison with every other team.
I think Andretti is going to be announced shortly after they confirm the Chicago GP. Since Indy and Chicago aren’t too far away. 2026, you’ll have 4 US races and Andretti on the grid for their “home” race in Chi-Town.
I’m seeing a lot of America phobia honestly lol. Always upset when Americans come into the sport, but we are perfectly fine with sharing Indy car and other racing series lol. I’ve literally had a European tell me it’s “their sport” and I’ll never have a place in it 💀
As an American seeing this whole thing play out, it is legitimately driving me away from F1, I just hope that Andretti and force their way in cause at this rate it seems like they'll have everything sorted out, a team principle, drivers, sponsors, unique car design, Cadillac engine, everything done, and they'll still get a No. "We race as one (excluding americans)"
Andretti will really cause F1 to raise their game. Not just the individual teams, but for promoting the teams and drivers. right now, F1 teams are acting like this is a European club and Americans are only good to be fans and contribute by spending money, and not by being a competitor. That may not be their true mindset, but they surely act that way.
United States citizen here. Found f1 through RUclipsr playing the f1 game and always enjoyed racing (grew up with my dad as a big nascar fan) so decided to check out drive to survive they mentioned and got sucked into the sport. This led to me finding and watching Indycar (better watch times, financially accessible if I wanted to attend a race, etc.). Andretti is THE biggest team in Indycar. Andretti, Penske, and Ganassi are the big three in Indycar but you hear and see more and more of Andretti than Penske and cgr. Having Andretti in f1 makes sense to have an American team in f1 as Haas doesn’t feel like an American team, leaned into American sponsors, etc.
Indycar is a spec seriesand Andretti has been doing BADLY in Indycar for years now! No championships!!!! F1 is a constructors championship!! Don’t expect a team doingbadly in a SPEC SERIES to suddenly be competitive in a constructors championship
From P9-P20, it's the most competitive it's ever been. That lets you get a Haas into Q3 every once in a while. From P1-P2 it's the least competitive it's ever been.
I wonder if they should put on an "Andretti F1 street demonstration" like Red Bull do from time to time when they have a viable car. Invite the F1 bosses and make it an event. Do a street one and a circuit one. DONE. I certainly think they should allow this team to compete as an 11th team. They really have pulled out all the stops "Spared no expense"
There is a very big difference between building a WT model from CAD to building a complete competitive car, and running an F1 team. Neither of which Andretti have been involved with. Having been working in F1 for the past 40 years I have seen many come & go. Most of those teams had respected talented technical staff, yet they could still not make the top ten. If Andretti get the entry, then many many years of development will be needed to even get to Q3 imho. by that time the American fan base will have lost interest again, and I'm afraid it will all collapse on Andretti.
DHL does not sponsor Andretti anymore. BTW, They are now with Chip Ganassi racing. Also, DHL is already involved as a sponsorship in F1. I agree Andretti should be on the grid, though they have been poor in Indycar over the last few years. F1 is a closed shop and believes in its hype far too much.
Look I love Indycar NASCAR And IMSA to me they are peak Motorsport, but if Andretti was allowed in F1 I would 100% pay closer attention and actually attempt to watch the races once again.
Americans are car people by nature, i have lived in different countries including the US, American common sense and their way to be swift and practical at everything propels their culture to be a strong car culture, add to that their competitiveness, bringing a potentially successful American team is a Slam Dunk. My only question right now is, whats gonna happen first?, an American Team winning a WDC or the American Soccer team winning the World Cup, both are gonna happen sooner or later.
I had my doubts when andretti was gonna use the renault PU in 26 and thought the FOM had their stand firm. But at this point, with both the team and GM working overtime, the FOM decision is starting to look like a bigger and bigger joke with every single second passing.
Rules are there for a reason, they come with years of experience, whether you like it or not, if you don't know why you cant drive faster then the speed limit, you don't deserve to drive ....... RULES!!! PS if you are American, ....... please do NOT react!!!!
People keep saying F1 cares about the American market, despite: - Not allowing a potentially competitive American team to join while keeping an underfunded backmarker around - Having three races, all of which are prohobitively expensive for the regular fan to attend - Having your marquee event set at 10pm PST so that Europeans can watch it but Americans in the country where the race is held can't - Adding new gimmicks like sprint races to "capture the American market", assuming we all are casual/new fans and have short attention spans - There having not been an American race winner in F1 since 1979 or American manufacturer win since 1976. They don't care about America. They care about appearing as if they care about us, without actually doing the dirty work of connecting with the average Joe.
Playoffs, last placed team has to face a new team in 5 qualifying sessions. And lock dev on the car. Winner gets into F1. Gives us something to watch in the off season. They can race and still develop next years car. Add pitstop challenge to it so see which team is better too.
The most frustrating part about andretti situation with f1 is we got a team like haas that seem like just want to participate & become moving billboard & a team without proper identity like visarb that not gonna even try dream/being champion.
F1…..Take a poll! I would think that most F1 fans, world wide, would love to see Andretti in the series. Give the FANS what they want! Try that for a change. Believe me, you don’t want to lose the American market!
As an American I know no one that supports Haas but we all want to support Andretti. Living in Italy, I see no Ferrari fans caring for Haas despite them being their #1 customer. Haas is a problem and Andretti can do nothing but improve the sport
I find it so so frustrating that Liberty Media and Formula 1 are trying so hard to build an American audience while actively keeping out an actual American Motorsport team named after an American Formula 1 Champion.
Andretti has: A Formula E team, arguably more successful than their Porsche supplier A very successful Indy Car program IMSA, Extreme E, and Indy NXT programs GM has: IndyCar engine supplier WEC Cadillac program WEC Corvette program With the wind tunnel model done, the only reason they'd be denied entry is from the existing teams not wanting to share the pie. Which they have already agreed to do with the latest Concord agreement and the anti dilution fee. The technical capabilities and partnerships are there.
Apparently one of the other rejected bids, Hitech Twenty Six, is in the process if taking legal action against the FIA for they way they selected the new teams. This is at least according to F1 journalist Joe Saward. If true this could give every incentive to FOM to delay their answer on Andretti even further which would suck. Enough push back from FOM and i can see GM being fed up with the process and backing out.
I feel like this is a separate argument. I don't think F1 is anti-Andretti. I think it's anti-expansion. Haas & V-CARB should be sold to Andretti & Porsche.
Jean Hass watching hius team be mid is the most frustating part of all of this imo. Imagine if Mario just wrote jean a huge check and do us all a favor. We need a "The American Team" in the sport.

Absolutely correct
GM isn’t cos THEY PULLED OUT OF THE ANDRETTI DEAL to enterF1…..
Theydont want to supply any engine till 2028….
12 would be perfect.
@@TommoMcCluskeyIt really is
@@Appletank813 is max but it’s probably too crowded, 12 is perfect imo
Agreed. Besides 11 is a stupid number - doesn't suit metric (10) or imperial (12). That's reason enough 🤣
either Haas gets on with it and sells to Andretti or 11 teams are accepted onto the grid
The only way I see Gene selling, is if they keep finishing last. 😅
@@TommoMcCluskey So then it's just a matter of time. 😇
I’d prefer 12 teams, 24 drivers.
It would certainly open up the opportunities for young drivers to go straight from F2 champion to F1 seat

Spot on
I don't have a say from a legal stand point as only the FIA and Liberty have a say, but one would guess that they are leaning on Liberty trying to coerce them into blocking their entry. End of the day if Liberty and FIA say yes, there is nothing the teams can do about it. As you say, the Concorde agreement is binding.
@@caphowdy666GM pulled out of the Andretti proposal and didn’t want to supply any engine till 2028. That’s why Andretti was denied cos IT WAS MANDATORY TO BRING IN A NEW ENGINE SUPPLIER! GM pulled out AFTER FIA had checked the proposal and BEFORE F1/FOM had to decide abt it.
Andretti didn’t comply totally requirements of entry of new team anymore…..
I’m a NASCAR fan that dabbles in F1. If Andretti were to enter, it would give me an actual team to root for. I’d invest in merch, subscription services, social media accounts, etc.
Currently, I almost feel unwanted by many teams.
I can't wait to see the cameras not showing the Andretti cars
yeah man you're absolutely right, and that rolex 24 with cadillac and porsche was pretty wild

I've been watching F1 since 2018 and as an American, F1's attempt at blocking Andretti from entering the sport when they've done EVERYTHING asked of them to get in is one of the most frustrating things I've seen following this sport

BANG ON TOMMO
Just reading FOM's release and some of what I wrote yesterday about needing a GM PU and support is contained within it.
Well said!!!! All of it! Totally agree with you!
DHL have switched from Andretti to CG in Indycar but yeah I get your point, plenty to go around.
Just let them in, I’m not American but I’d love to see a new team on the grid and the family have been in f1 before
The fact that Haas and Visa Mastercard Racing is a thing in F1 but Andretti isn't, is depressing
News of yesterday…. TOYOTA RACING is now working with Haas…

Full yellow DHL livery would go beyond insanely hard. Gainbridge a close second
Correcting myself. Can’t happen now, DHL moved to Ganassi.

Michael Andretti was alongside Ayrton Senna for the 1993 season, poor results overall but a podium finish in his last race before Mika Häkkinen replaced Michael for the final 3 races of the season.
Haas don't have complete facilities. Andretti do. Let Andretti in. They are the true US team the sport needs.
Audi has had an F1 car for a while now and I STILL don’t completely believe they’ll be in F1 until it’s on an actual starting grid
tommo: "these cars don't break!"
charles: *weeping*
Even my dad, who knows almost nothing about racing, and has never cared for racing, knows who Andretti is.
Love it, It is different and perhaps is nice for some videos but not all videos, This feels more like a live stream which is fine but we do like the edited/cut videos too.
Also, A splash of yellow would go nicely on the grid, A DHL/Gainbridge collab perhaps, Andretti DHL F1 team sounds good lol, Atleast it’s not Visa Cash App RB F1 team lol
This aged well 😅
My question, and big question is
If they aren't an official entrant, can't they spend what they like on R&D, are they limited by the budget cap? If not then well well well....
It won't count for the cap I'm pretty sure
Well if they aren’t officially on the roster, they can go ham on their car and do as much development as they want, and they should, if they get accepted and F1 bans their car, that will be on another level of pettiness
@@ammarisrar2005as if Andretti has endless money to spend 😂😂😂😂
If Andretti can't get into F1 after everything they've shown about how serious they are, then F1 is basically just saying new teams are not allowed to join no matter what.
You mentioned DHL as one of Andretti's big sponsors. Didn't they leave the Andretti side to sponsor Palou at Ganassi in late 2023 ?
Andretti Global Headquarters is in Fishers, Indiana, right outside of Indianapolis.
Haas needs to sell. Bring on those Caddy engines!
It's worth mentioning that McLaren doesn't have any issue racing in both Indycar and F1 (as well as a bunch of other disciplines).
McLaren is doingBADLYin Indycar….
Unrelated but big up the 1.7% of Tommos views coming from South Africa🇿🇦🇿🇦
you have to remember, Liberty Media is an entertainment company, nothing is uncultivated.
Tommo: These cars dont break
Alpine: I dream of the day this happens
Can you post some more shorts, Tommo?
Team Netherlands rocking 3rd with only 17 million population 👀
I’m seeing a lot of America phobia honestly lol. Always upset when Americans come into the sport, but we are perfectly fine with sharing Indy car and other racing series lol. I’ve literally had a European tell me it’s “their sport” and I’ll never have a place in it 💀
The F1 Teams are afraid that if this works Penske and Ganassi will be next and they will actually pose a real challenge.
I agree. Seeing Andretti run their operation fully out of Fishers one day would be so cool
Here there is that italian spectator of yours in the 100 people test sample 😂
I’m in the US, big F1 fan. Andretti most have an F1 team and I can guarantee it will make noise than most of the teams on current grid
Spot on.
I would argue that Andretti is the most “racing name” there is, along with Fittipaldi, so this team would make perfect sense just starting from that
United States citizen here.
No need for an American team as F1 IS NOT ABOUT NATIONALITIES OR COUNTRIES. The entitlement of you Americans is unreal.
From P9-P20, it's the most competitive it's ever been. That lets you get a Haas into Q3 every once in a while. From P1-P2 it's the least competitive it's ever been.

Germany is holding strong
Love your content Tommo❤
Pstt Andretti we'll let you into the NASCAR cup series or any of the series we have
I wonder if they should put on an "Andretti F1 street demonstration" like Red Bull do from time to time when they have a viable car. Invite the F1 bosses and make it an event. Do a street one and a circuit one. DONE.
I certainly think they should allow this team to compete as an 11th team. They really have pulled out all the stops "Spared no expense"
Michael was teammate with Senna for part of the "93 season.
Andretti would be amazing for the sport
Literally why I’m subbed to Tommo. Sky sports but speaks for the USA pov because its fair.
I had my doubts when andretti was gonna use the renault PU in 26 and thought the FOM had their stand firm. But at this point, with both the team and GM working overtime, the FOM decision is starting to look like a bigger and bigger joke with every single second passing.
Nail on the head, I fee like you speak well in behalf of U.S. fans like me.
We need an 11th team on the grid even if they suck
We need another team
yay South Africa is on the list :)
Since they aren’t an official F1 team does that mean in theory that they aren’t restricted by the cost cap on R&D
It's NOT about the money it's about the egos.
Andretti completely deserves to be on the grid, way more than Haas and maybe a couple others.
Rules are there for a reason, they come with years of experience, whether you like it or not, if you don't know why you cant drive faster then the speed limit, you don't deserve to drive ....... RULES!!!
PS if you are American, ....... please do NOT react!!!!
So new Andretti/Cadillac livery video when? ;)
People keep saying F1 cares about the American market, despite:
- Not allowing a potentially competitive American team to join while keeping an underfunded backmarker around
- Having three races, all of which are prohobitively expensive for the regular fan to attend
- Having your marquee event set at 10pm PST so that Europeans can watch it but Americans in the country where the race is held can't
- Adding new gimmicks like sprint races to "capture the American market", assuming we all are casual/new fans and have short attention spans
- There having not been an American race winner in F1 since 1979 or American manufacturer win since 1976.
They don't care about America. They care about appearing as if they care about us, without actually doing the dirty work of connecting with the average Joe.
Stop the American entitlement
There needs to be some rule where if you dont gave X amount of points by X time then youre team can be force sold to a new player.
Playoffs, last placed team has to face a new team in 5 qualifying sessions. And lock dev on the car. Winner gets into F1. Gives us something to watch in the off season. They can race and still develop next years car. Add pitstop challenge to it so see which team is better too.
DHL I believe are no longer affiliated with Andretti Autosport in Indycar. They left to sponsor the Chip Ganassi car of defending champion Alex Palou.
The antenna in your hair suits you
To this day, when making a questionable pass on the highway, I yell “Andretti sees the hole, makes the move!”
As an American I know no one that supports Haas but we all want to support Andretti. Living in Italy, I see no Ferrari fans caring for Haas despite them being their #1 customer. Haas is a problem and Andretti can do nothing but improve the sport
I agree with you
the thing is there should only be 10 team and any new team should go head to head with the bottom 2 teams for the spot
I find it so so frustrating that Liberty Media and Formula 1 are trying so hard to build an American audience while actively keeping out an actual American Motorsport team named after an American Formula 1 Champion.
Andretti has:
A Formula E team, arguably more successful than their Porsche supplier
A very successful Indy Car program
IMSA, Extreme E, and Indy NXT programs
GM has:
IndyCar engine supplier
WEC Cadillac program
WEC Corvette program
With the wind tunnel model done, the only reason they'd be denied entry is from the existing teams not wanting to share the pie. Which they have already agreed to do with the latest Concord agreement and the anti dilution fee. The technical capabilities and partnerships are there.
Andretti in F1 means that the American sponsors now have a first option to sponsor a proper American team. other teams are aware of that.
I thought I was hallucinating when I saw the title. I hope this is true
