I'm mind-blown by this too, even tho I kinda expected it. As someone who worked in some AI projects last year, I would be really curious to see what goes under the hood of this models when they play chess and how they "memorize" the position.

There was a guy in our local chess club that was like Martin.
Most people there were your average club players, probably 1200-1300 rated, a few higher end people in the 2000s, and then there was this one talkative guy who you knew had a few screws loose, but he loved to play chess even though he was god awful at it and never had a chance against any of our regulars, even the lower rated ones.
Anytime we would get a super casual person who was a complete beginner who saw us and wanted to join in, we would send him to this guy. He would win about half the time against people who have probably only played 10 times in their entire life, but it was always a great experience when it happened.
You don't have to be great at the game to be worthwhile to the community, just like Martin. We love Martin

Every hobby needs a jobber. The guy who has been playing 40K for 40 years, but only paints a 10th of his armies, and never thins his paints. The Tekken player who has the worst King you've ever seen, but he's at every single meet up. The guitarist who can tune by ear, but can only play a few chords. The people who silently lift up and encourage everyone around them by being woefully mediocre at their craft, because they love it more than the people who are better than them.

i love this story. becuase so many competitors lose sight of why they play. its not money. its not fame. deep down its becuase its fun. no one would play if it wasnt fun. remember when magnus and hikaru played the bong cloud at a tournament and everyone was like "THATS DISRESPECTFUL YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED" i went "lol thats funny, im glad they're having fun, afterall they payed to be here.". if you payed to be at a tournament, and you are angry and not having fun; why are you there? money? bro that isnt worth it, pain and dissappointment in the game isnt worth the money that you basically gambled on yourself. just have fun damn it. enjoy what you can and your play will be better.

Absolutely. I wonder, do they know the rules, but just realize they aren't getting consequences for breaking them... or do they just not understand the rules? I don't think the rules are that complicated, so I'm guessing it's the former. Chess is a complicated game, but the rules are not very complicated, if that makes sense. When Stockfish played Leela and Leela just started doing illegal moves, there didn't seem to be any sort of mechanic in place to stop it. Stockfish just didn't or couldn't object and they kept going as if it never happened. That blew my mind.
