@maxave7448 they definitely understand chess rules, there are simply too many positions you can't just memorize, copilot correctly learned the patterns and developed a correct abstraction of chess.
There was a guy in our local chess club that was like Martin. Most people there were your average club players, probably 1200-1300 rated, a few higher end people in the 2000s, and then there was this one talkative guy who you knew had a few screws loose, but he loved to play chess even though he was god awful at it and never had a chance against any of our regulars, even the lower rated ones. Anytime we would get a super casual person who was a complete beginner who saw us and wanted to join in, we would send him to this guy. He would win about half the time against people who have probably only played 10 times in their entire life, but it was always a great experience when it happened. You don't have to be great at the game to be worthwhile to the community, just like Martin. We love Martin

Absolutely. I wonder, do they know the rules, but just realize they aren't getting consequences for breaking them... or do they just not understand the rules? I don't think the rules are that complicated, so I'm guessing it's the former. Chess is a complicated game, but the rules are not very complicated, if that makes sense. When Stockfish played Leela and Leela just started doing illegal moves, there didn't seem to be any sort of mechanic in place to stop it. Stockfish just didn't or couldn't object and they kept going as if it never happened. That blew my mind.

To answer the question, I think most of the chat bots "know" the rules in that they can recite them, but don't really understand the spatial arrangement of the board. And they are imperfect at keeping track of where the pieces are, since they're programmed to think in terms of language, not the locations of objects.

Co pilot played strong moves in the openings and middle game. For endgame, I think it lacked training data as there are too many possible moves in the endgame.
You said the reverse. There's tablebases for all possible endgames with upto seven pieces on the board. So there's alot of training data, it's more impressive copilot played amazing in the middle game especially as the game went out of theory and it was still playing best moves every other move@@superneenjaa718

When i first made Stockfish play against Copilot, i was suprised by how competent and obedient to chess rules it was compared to other chatbots. I waited for Copilot for months, thank you Levy.
