“That poor women’s husband needs burying” Dutch said that. Sadie didn’t tell him to, Dutch thought of it. The Dutch that cared. He had so much good in him. And it just fell apart. Such a sad thing to happen, but such a good character arc
Arthur is like a son for Dutch and Horsea, and one of the longest gang members, too, so I don't think that they are angry about, that Arthur listen to their conversations.
It also made me think about how even after all that broke the gang apart, the memories made are forever, and, in that sense, they made it to where things are perfect for them, and they can live in those happy moments now
Dutch was always concerned with people from the outside destroying the gang.. Yet, the gang imploded on itself. Micah and Dutch destroyed the gang themselves.
Technically Micah did he got into dutches head and corrupted him more, Hosea was the voice of reason Dutch would listen to most of the time, Arthur has been a near second voice of reason
@DODO MCGuy Arthur knew the gang was done for. John wanted better for his family. Dutch causing a war between native Americans and the corrupt army didn't help anyone but himself.

I completely understand the argument that Dutch had been unhinged from the start, but I personally think it was really Hoseas death that made him crazy, even if he has poor judgement during the beginning half of the game he still has a heart. After Hosea does that goes away
I think it was a combination of the concussion on the trolley, Hosea dying, and then all the stresses of leading the gang without Hosea. Then it really went off the rails when Micah started talking in his ear.

Dutch was right, they never strung them up. It's sort of heartbreaking to watch Dutch and Hosea sit there talking. When Dutch says "we did it Hosea. Whatever else happens, we did it." Watch Red dead 3 be another prequel going further back into time, showing the beginning of the gang. Would be amazing bc we would know the ending would not be sad, it would be a leading into red dead 2 and would be a masterpiece.
The whole “We did it” scene got my eyes a little watery. It’s a combination of Dutch’s anxiety creeping in that this is the end-and Dutch’s care popping out since he noticed Hosea was coughing and sick, and was probably gunna die soon
I was thinking this too! And that’s probably why Dutch went off the deep end so badly because he was already losing Hosea to potentially TB and was trying to make his time with him count. But it got cut short when the bank robbery went south.
@@TheTimbs_ more like cancer, not much time has passed from the picture on Arthur's bed. Hosea was like 35 in that picture, 20 years later you're not in that state. He aged incredibly bad like, looks at least in his 60s, he's skinny and so on.
Also shows that Hosea was Arthur's real mentor and Father Figure, not Dutch. Dutch didn't care enough to really get to know Arthur, Hosea on the other hand knew Arthur's gentler and smarter side underneath the tough guy act. He wanted to spend his final days helping people, encouraging the camp to live their best lives. Arthur ended up doing the exact same thing, after learning he had TB. Contrast that with Dutch, who was adamant about survival at any cost, even if it means they have to turn into monsters.
@@TheAbbeyoftheEveryman It's never mentioned in any dialogue. In fact, there's two encounters where Hosea asks Dutch and Micah point blank what happened in Blackwater, and both of them avoid telling him. Arthur only finds out from Javier.
Hosea was the only one in the gang that Dutch respected and listened to most of the time. There's a reason why Dutch's madness and the gang's destruction accelerated when Hosea died.
Could he though? It feels as though, at some point between the robbery going bad and them escaping from Guarma, something snapped permanently in Dutch. Whether it was seeing Hosea die, or nearly dying himself, or enduring the torture and starvation, Dutch broke. Him killing that old lady is proof enough of that, I think. Once he did that, the writing was on the wall for his spiral into madness, and the rest of RDR2 was inevitable.
@@funnyvalentinedidnothingwrong You know I'll never understand why people think Dutch killing that old lady was evil. If he killed her so he didn't have to pay her or not to leave any loose ends, that'll be one thing. But Dutch gave her the last gold bar we had from the bank yet she still demanded more gold that we didn't have. To the point of threatening Dutch with a knife. She absolutely was going to betray us if we let her go. I just don't understand why Dutch was reasoning killing her to Arthur with "I know some Spanish" or "I know human beings" when he literally could've just said: "She demanded for more gold than what we had and threatened me with a knife Arthur! She knows who we are and we don't have any more gold to ensure her silence. If she was willing to commit treason on her own people for a gold bar, then imagine what Fussar could've offered her for information about us. If we let her go, she would have definitely sold us out."
@@sean543213 I was thinking exactly the same thing, that was nothing more than selfe defense, I dunno why Arthur was so concerned by that act, maybe he was expecting Dutch to just knock her out or something, but would be too risky anyway
Funny Valentine Did Nothing Wrong First of all I love your name second of all I think Dutch killing that old bitch was completely justified a lot of people see it as him breaking where I see it as she was a genuine threat to the gangs safety
Of all the NPC men in RD2, I think Hosea has to be my favourite.. He was what kept Dutch sane for so long, he was the voice of reason. It's such a pitty how it ended for him 😢
@ScuddyX ScuddyX For one thing, you should stop harrassing people and making fun of them, when you yourself are the fool. What he said made perfect sense. He corrected the original comment about a wrong timestamp to let them know when the event actually occured. Maybe you should look a little more into the situation next time before you start calling people out.
2:41 it’s beautifully haunting, like they knew they were gonna die and this is what they would tell each other in the afterlife. But “they did it” they lived free and died with some bit of freedom in their hearts. They knew death was better than bondage.
I was really touched by that moment. If only Dutch had really believed that they had pulled it off, he could of shed his ego and ideas of grandeur, and focused on the gang's wellbeing.
It is part of the item requests which you can do to raise your honor. Some characters in the gang will ask Arthur to go out and fetch a certain item for them and if he finds them then he can give the requested item to that particular person and it will raise his honor and they will give him something in return like Poison Throwing Knives from Javier Escuella or an Improved Tomahawk from Charles Smith
Dutch didn't see Hosea as a traitor (like Arthur and John) though he, too, asked questions Hosea's demise was the most deadly blow to the Gang's foundation from which it couldn't recover ever
I expected Dutch to argue hard after Hosea told him that there are other good people that did bad things and were fighting problems just as they were; and I was surprised when he just said "Why is it like that?". It truly feels like yet one more showcase of Hosea really being the only one capable of knocking sense into Dutch and Dutch listening and taking his points very close. Not that we needed more proof of that, but just really awesome that Rockstar made sure to show it to us in so many ways
I love it how Hosea and Dutch are having a serious conversation whilst the rest of the gang are screaming the ring a dang do Edit: Wow this comment really blew up huh? Thanks everyone.
7:50 Shows that Hosea was one of the few that Dutch could really level with. Everyone else he needed to uphold a reputation or show strength. But Hosea was his equal, an old friend who knew his worst and best.
On one hand I appreciate all these hidden dialogues. On the other, they offer so much more content, character development and insight in each and every character that it annoys the hell out of me that they are so RNG based. I played for a 100 hours and I NEVER heard 90% of the conversations on RUclips.
Thats what they want though. Play the game again, find the conversations yourself and the secrets, now that you know they are there. Its fun as hell. 😎🤟
I like that Hosea is the only one Dutch really calls "brother." Arthur, John, Micah, any of the girls, it's always "son" "Mr./Mrs. something" or their name. Shows that respect he had for Hosea, above anyone. Not to mention, Hosea is the only one that can stand up to Dutch. Everyone else just get browbeaten about loyalty and faith until they agree, end of the game when the gang is falling apart aside, until they agree. Dutch never even tries with Hosea.
At 2:30 you can hear the sadness in Hosea. It almost sounds like he's choking up and on the verge of tears. That conversation about reminiscing was a bit of foreshadowing and it seemed like it was Dutchs unofficial goodbye to Hosea. It's sad. Very sad. Because Hosea dying was what sent Dutch over the edge. After coming back from Guarma he talks about how much he misses Hosea and he starts going downhill from there. In fact I don't think Dutch really cared all that much about Lenny dying as much as he did Hosea. That Saint Denis bank robbing job was about the same as the Blackwater robbery, only the Blackwater robbery was worse because more of the gang died and they didn't get away with anything. The Saint Denis bank robbery job at least they got away with the gold that is until it sank. I wonder what if the boat didn't sink, what was their plan? Were they just gonna find an island and start living there never to return to the rest of the gang? How would they send for them? How would they let them know where they were? So if the boat never sank, Dutch, Micah, Bill Javier and Arthur would've stayed on some island with the gold and who knows what would've happened from there. Then again, if the boat never sank and they got to their destination then that would've resulted in John getting hanged, and the rest of the gang eventually getting caught and either put in jail or killed. So when you think about it, it's actually good that the boat sank. IDK why but everytime I walk into a conversation between 2 people after they're done talking, Arthur normally says his unique dialogue related to that topic but everytime I do it, Arthur doesn't say anything about it, he just says random stuff so IDK why it does that.
I don’t think anyone noticed but Dutch actually held onto Hosea’s hand for a little while. That’s how you know that someone is being honest with you, at least in the moment.
Looking at their moments make me think... They technically like 2 dads, both together taking care of arthur and building a bigger family, like a power couple
The attention to detail in this game is amazing. I might be minority here but I'd love an Arthur DLC (since John had one) about the time John joined the gang + the drama with Annabelle and Colm and his brother. Considering John has been in the gang for a decade-ish or so, and the O'Driscoll/Van der Linde feud is implied to be almost just as long, it'd be cool to play as a young Arthur, develop his relationship with John before he abandoned the gang (which changed his dynamic with Arthur), and see a bit of young Hosea and Dutch, while still having the pleasure of playing as Arthur again, sans death (his, anyway) c: Not to mention mayyybe seeing how some of the gang members joined the crew, a bit about Mac and Davey, etc etc. Just, seeing a bit more of Dutch's and Hosea's friendship would be pretty amazing. These two have such a strong bond and I really enjoy how different but supportive of each other they are. Perhaps too supportive, in Hosea's case. They all feel human. It's nice.
Red Dead 3 can go one of two ways. A prequel about the O' Driscoll Vander Linde feud. A sequel about Jack Marston fleeing after he kills Ross. Personally I hope that it's another prequel. Maybe even Dutch could be the protagonist. And then we can see what made John and Arthur respect him so much. The lore to red dead is so fascinating and I want more.
Ethan Bradley I agree! Personally I thought of a DLC because I really wanted to play as Arthur. RDR 2 is an amazing game, but because it's focused on Arthur, it didn't really answer all my questions about John- such as what about his daughter, what about that "proposal" Abigail mentions in RDR 1 that he did with a gun to her head (Honestly, we were robbed), and what about John being Dutch's golden boy (almost feels like that should be Arthur) or the thing that Bill, Dutch and Javier kept mentioning, about how he appeared arrogant/morally superior to them for doing things like marrying Abigail, especially when he was such a horrible husband/father early on? Because the focus is on Arthur we don't really... See those details about John. So the reason I mentioned a DLC is because if the focus is on Arthur we could see those details about his own character more clearly. As for the possibility of a whole RDR 3 in that timeline, to me, read dead redemption = the fall of the west and the final days of the outlaws. Playing at a time where they're on the rise feels... Off somehow. Not that I'd complain about a RDR 3 set in that time lmao, tho personally I like Dutch being a mysterious character and not knowing his motivations too clearly. I'd love to play as Hosea or even as a new character. As for Jack, I'm torn because I do wanna know what happens to him a lot, but thematically it's just so good that his life is a mystery. I would love a game about him though, hands down. I actually love Jack, and I don't mind his voice or his anger/behavior or everything else. It's fitting for where his character is at the moment and it fascinates me.
@@ethanbradley2089 Most likely they will make a brand new story with new characters. If it's going to be a Redemption game they can't do the young gang idea, because your character always has to die while achieving redemption in a RDR game. That happens to neither Dutch nor Hosea.
6:17 really got to me when I heard it in camp. I don't know why but just hearing someone as grand as Dutch get so quiet is strange. Like we're missing part of the picture. I also went to talk to Dutch (I love annoying him) after this and he did't give his usual answers. He seemed reserved. I just feel like there's something there that we as the player and Arthur don't know about.
"Why ain't we better?" So troubling and heartbreaking to hear Dutch ponder shit like that, knowing he'll go off the deep end and lose his core values Flawed as he was, at some core level he strove to be better.
That’s my perspective as well. Everyone has it wrong or right at the same time. Dutch, fundamentally, is a bad man. A man with a superiority complex & one of megalomania. However, he was also a man whom attempted to be kind & resolved to assist the downtrodden. A man that attempted to overcome his true nature & be something better, especially with a support system (Hosea, Arthur, John, etc) that permits him to realize his own potential for benevolence. Good men don’t need rules, & a support system. Bad men attempting to be better are reliant upon them.
The only reason people didn’t like Arthur/John’s gun belt was because was because the satchel took up the space for the other duel wielding holster. So they had to put the second holster on the front of Arthur/John’s belt.
Now I'm greedy and want a story of the Dutch gang in its prime. I know theres appeal to the idea of a happy past with a side of mystery and speculation to it. But it would still be worth while I think. The only problem is they would have to make up another character to the events leading up to Blackwater and make up some reason as to why none of the gang has ever mentioned them.
Arthur mentions there was a traitor in the gang once that he killed in the camp, maybe they could bring him up. Or maybe some of the other gang members they talk about, like Jenny, Davey, and Mac. It can't be to hard
I feel really sorry for Dutch actually. Being in a position where the lives of that many people are in your hands takes a heavy toll on your mind as it is, now in an era like the old west, with someone among your ranks actively working against you and in a situation in which you were literally wanted dead or alive? He was bound to crack, it wasn't a matter of "if" but of "when".
in every interaction, have you noticed it was always Dutch seeming troubled by something? Dutch saw out Hosea to bury Jake, because how things went down with Micah burning down the house. Second one, he was worried about Hosea, they shared a moment together that showed a lot of unspoken things that were probably on his mind. Third one, Dutch is brooding, thinking, probably still reliving what happened in Black water. Hosea notices and comes for him, and Dutch seems better after admitting he messed up in Black Water, and feeling Hosea was still with him. But the fourth one, that one seems deeper. Dutch has been running from Black Water and trying to keep his people alive and now he's surrounded by people he was taught to hate in the south. It starts with him checking on Hosea, probably for some experience they both have to have shared feelings. And it ends up Dutch confides in Hosea even with the anger, and him deflating a bit with the advice. "Sad thing is good people do bad things." "LIke us?" "Just like us" "Sure, and fhey fought something else, and they did bad things,...such is the world." "I always wondered, why aint we better?" And Hosea gives him an honest answer that isn't about the south anymore, its deeper more like about them. "Now that..I don't know." "Now those are some problems we can't solve." To Arthur about their pasts. And the last one, Dutch is troubled about the unknowns of the city, and how to get everyone out of a big job. This is it, the big break he's always talking about, you can see he wants it to work, and Its Hosea planning with him, giving him hope. Even teased him with his catch phrase. "....Have a little faith Dutch." And actually gets a laugh out of him, I know hw was talking to Arthur but it felt more like a relieved laugh, like it was his and Hosea's big break. The score they always needed or wanted. Then, it goes to shit Hosea is captured, probably distracting the pinkertons long enough to let Abagail get away, Hosea would do that, protect his gang his family at all costs. Dutch has been slowly loosing reality since he hit his head on the bust job with Lenny and Arthur with the trolly. Its not obvious until Guarma, but the only person he would have confided in, the only person he trusted to let behind his walls, was dead. There was only a slowly declining mental state, and probably an honest lack of caring after that. it's very likely the pinkertons didn't do anything but follow the trail and plant doubt with Micah after Guarama, watching the gang tear itself apart from the madness in Dutch unchecked and Micah's influence on him in mourning of Hosea. I wouldn't be surprised if all that choas,. killing Cornwall, was revenge for Hosea. Thats a sad thought, especially when you see Dutch's face watching Arthur dying on that cliff with Micah telling him to come with him, he realized just how badly he messed up, how he got his family killed. And he couldn't deal with it, turning away and going by himself. After 1899, you see his struggle in his mind, when you met him in 1907, and his death in 1911. When he tells John you cant fight everything...but he cant stop either. Dutch wanted a better life, wanted those he cared for safe. His anger and his pain his pride wouldn't let him live quietly, not like John. Maybe if Hosea was still alive, maybe if the bank job worked, it wouldn't be that way. Dutch disagreed and had spats with Hosea, but he was able to confide in him, keep his demons at bay. Its a well written story of two characters and those that were affected by them.
honestly, i don’t think dutch was fronting or hiding his true colors. if that were the case he wouldn’t have felt any remorse for arthur’s death. in arthurs last moments, dutch was hit with a wave of guilt and reflection to how he changed by manipulation and circumstance. he wasn’t a bad man, he just slowly went insane
So much character development in this game Like it hurts you so badly when you see Dutch turning and then it warms your heart so much watching John become a better father
The St. Denis job was the only one where everyone EXCEPT Dutch was confident it would work out, yet it went horribly wrong in the worst way. This probably only added to Dutch's ego. Further proving to himself that he's the only one fit to make the decisions.
"like you said its a big country we can always get lost" " yes, and we can always make more money" facts.. Dutch never wanted to "get lost" he wanted to continue robbing.
I believe Dutch’s “ we did it” was him admitting that he knew things were closing in nd dat weather we was arrested or killed by law it’s cuz life they lived. Only Dutch would admit something like that to Hosea without having to use those exact words
Man I truly want an RDR game heck even a DLC about Dutch and Hosea. The Brain and the Heart of the Van Der Linde Gang. Dutch with his Charisma and Pistols and my old boy Hosea with his Wit and two bottles of beer against the world.
Dutch always had his flaws and was never a perfect man, and he did take advantage of people. He liked the wealth and power that being a gang leader brought him and that went to his head. However, I also think he genuienly believed in his own ideals and was fighting for more than just money. I think he did love the whole gang in his own way and losing his family was the thing that terrified him the most. To label him as evil, a narcissist or a completely bad man is just simply wrong in my eyes
When Dutch ,authur, and hosea went fishing together and singing those songs too it,s too bad those songs were put on the CD with the other one but my favorite song on there was outlaw s from the West . it's was a good song.mg.
These moments seems what Dutch had lost after Hosea's death. Someone to share his pain and happiness with, someone he can call a brother who can keep him in his senses at the darkest times. Hosea was the only thing that kept Dutch in line. Without him he fell apart.
I love the time Dutch , authur, and hosea were fishing And singing like a tribute to hosea. a time when there was a great fishing trip and no care to the world the songs they were singing should be on the CD too.mg.🤠
@@kirikakirikakirika For a gang like that to be as well established, they must have been brilliant (many positives), going up against deadly institutions. But it's very easy to sink a ship with a few bad decisions (or dumb luck)
@@leone41ll People only ascribe to negative events more if there are more _of_ them. We see this statistically with relationships. For example, even if a couple is fighting 50% of the time, if the other 50% of the time they get along, they're likely to stay together. If they're fighting 60% of the time, they're statistically more likely to break up. This is the case with family and friends as well. People are willing to forgive the people they care about, even if they don't deserve it, but in Dutch's case, the negatives piled on and on and reached an unbearable level. I would also argue they weren't very well established at all, as they were vagabonds, constantly moving from place to place, and resorted to petty crime to get by. They weren't respected or feared (in fact they were disrespected and underestimated by almost everyone they came across), and when they started getting too violent, they were quick to be hunted and eradicated by the Pinkertons.
For whatever reason it seems like Dutch could only be truly and wholly vulnerable with Hosea. Hosea never threatened him mostly because he was never threatened by Dutch. They respected one another even when they vehemently disagreed, and Hosea never took any crap from Dutch which pissed him off and vice versa but both knew the other only meant well even when they fought. At least deep down. Whenever Dutch admits he's made a mistake with anyone but Hosea he's very defensive, or passes it by quickly, but when he talks about Blackwater with Hosea he is clearly ashamed of himself, but Hosea doesn't throw it in his face. Clearly they both had differing outlooks on life, but I think the key is that they could be vulnerable brothers with each other. With their unruly sons in Arthur and John. It truly did all begin falling apart with Hosea's death in my opinion. Exacerbated by the brutality of war on Guarma that broke Dutch.
I love that Hosea and Dutch are such close friends...and Arthur, he is basically their son, they raised him. I just wish everything had a good ending, we could see them living together and being happy with the rest of gang members.
In the making of these videos, I want to know how many recordings of dialogue have been ruined by uncle or reverend walking up and talking to Arthur, screwing up the sound of the conversation
I think what I love most about this game is that there's time enough for characters to show true gentleness with one another; nothing plot relevant, not even designated to their last words before dying, just people being people. The fact that this conversation can be missed entirely makes it even more valuable, in my opinion, and why each person's playthrough of Rdr2 is so unique, as it's shaped by the conversations you happen to overhear and the actions you choose to take both in the main plot and outside it on the road. Man I love this game and it's characters. Except you, Milton. You know what you did.
just love the natural and fluid bond between them, like the actors actually did alot of like, rascally things when they were young and were friends at the time

Hosea was the only person Dutch could admit he was wrong to, and considering Hosea’s the eldest in the gang I believe he’s like a father figure to him, which is also why he takes (most) of his advice to heart unlike Arthur or anyone else (except for Micah for some reason).
Hosea was the only member who was the same level as Dutch, best friends treating each other the same, the only one Dutch didn't mentor, Hosea probably mentored him.

Hosea: We don't need to take revenge, we hardly know the guy.
Whats the point of havin a best friend if they don’t rib the hell outa you.
@@sidneywilliams2230 I don’t think it was TB, probably old age. Dude was past 50, that’s super old for the 1800s

Imagine what Hosea would feel if he saw Dutch falling apart he would have been the only person who could have put him back on track
I just don't understand why Dutch was reasoning killing her to Arthur with "I know some Spanish" or "I know human beings" when he literally could've just said:
"She demanded for more gold than what we had and threatened me with a knife Arthur! She knows who we are and we don't have any more gold to ensure her silence. It truly feels like yet one more showcase of Hosea really being the only one capable of knocking sense into Dutch and Dutch listening and taking his points very close. Not that we needed more proof of that, but just really awesome that Rockstar made sure to show it to us in so many ways

7:50 Shows that Hosea was one of the few that Dutch could really level with. Everyone else he needed to uphold a reputation or show strength. But Hosea was his equal, an old friend who knew his worst and best.
This is one of the few times I’ve heard Dutch actually genuinely laugh with someone.

Would've been funnier if Micah walked by instead
Dutch is the perfect example for the quote "you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain"

It's nice.
Yea they probably will need at least 3 years
Puppet1Show hey, waiting for RDR 2 was totally worth it, I'm down for waiting if it means I get it! :D
I love when Dutch says "we did it... Hosea" and at the perfect moment the phonograph music cues in perfectly like the end of good movie :'-)

So troubling and heartbreaking to hear Dutch ponder shit like that, knowing he'll go off the deep end and lose his core values
Flawed as he was, at some core level he strove to be better.

They need to add in pocket watch chains n Dutch's vest n coat to the online and his gun belt
The only reason people didn’t like Arthur/John’s gun belt was because was because the satchel took up the space for the other duel wielding holster. So they had to put the second holster on the front of Arthur/John’s belt.
The chains espaisily
I need a dlc of when the gang all started I need it so bad.
Amen to that
Well then you're gonna be a young 20 years old Arthur or maybe 14 years old Arthur that's when Hosea and Dutch found him and Arthur joined the gang.
No bro you play as Dutch
Arthur mentions there was a traitor in the gang once that he killed in the camp, maybe they could bring him up. Or maybe some of the other gang members they talk about, like Jenny, Davey, and Mac. It can't be to hard
I feel really sorry for Dutch actually. Being in a position where the lives of that many people are in your hands takes a heavy toll on your mind as it is, now in an era like the old west, with someone among your ranks actively working against you and in a situation in which you were literally wanted dead or alive? He was bound to crack, it wasn't a matter of "if" but of "when".
Just two brothers who’ve been through it.
in every interaction, have you noticed it was always Dutch seeming troubled by something?

People always remember the negative, never the positive
Only if the negatives outweigh the positives.
@@kirikakirikakirika Not true. People tend to ascribe negative events more weight than positives, even if the number of events cancelled out.
@@kirikakirikakirika For a gang like that to be as well established, they must have been brilliant (many positives), going up against deadly institutions.
But it's very easy to sink a ship with a few bad decisions (or dumb luck)
@@leone41ll
People only ascribe to negative events more if there are more _of_ them.
@@kirikakirikakirika This argument falls apart tho if you introduce unfaithfulness. Even if it occurred only once.

Hosea was the only member who was the same level as Dutch, best friends treating each other the same, the only one Dutch didn't mentor, Hosea probably mentored him.

Hosea messing with Dutch about the "faith" line is one of the best things I've ever seen
Dutch lost his way to Micah’s manipulation , sure , but isn’t that Arthur and Hosea also part of the reason why Dutch is losing his mind? Dude keeps getting reminded by the two of them what kind of bad call he made every single minute.
