Fun fact: Death has the least screen time in the movie yet did the most in the movie
Yes, better than Jack Horner. He is like Tai lung from Kung Fu panda: He have little time of screen, but when he appears, the things stay more serious.
Or rattlesnake Jake from rango
His interactions with Puss reminds me of Po and Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2.
I think that's part of what made him such a good character.
Or jetstream sam in mgr revengeance
i love how in crystal cave scene 2:03 , Death casually said he actually not on the job, it's just pure personal between him and puss
If you don't care about your own wellbeing shouldn't Death take it personal by then?
Because Puss didn't appreciate his eight lives he wasted
Puss in Boots: I laugh in the face of Death
Death: And I took that personally
Yep more than likely Death views life as something that is sacred and extremely valuable. And to see Puss frivolously waste 8 of his 9 lives on things that frankly were stupid and could have been easily avoided, yeah I can see why he took it personally. If Death hadn’t come in when he did Puss likely would have kept up his self-destructive behavior and wasted his last life on something stupid for the last time as opposed to rekindling old and new connections and growing as a person the way he did throughout the movie. In a way by putting the fear of Death into him, Death did him a favor. He made him realize he’s out of time now, no more spare lives. No more retries. This is his last life and he had better live it well while keeping Memento Mori in mind.
When you're Death and 8 times you're called to pick up a life and f***ING hell it's this guy m!
I didn't get a chance to see this movie in theaters but I'm 99 percent sure death scared tons of little kids who went to see this lol
I mean, there were moms complaining on Reddit and other websites and social media about their kids crying at theaters and how the movie isn't suitable for kids because Death is too scary for them. XD

5:10 Notice at the very end, after they reach an accord, Death whistles at a slightly higher pitch?
It sounds _happy._
Literally all Death wanted was a little respect, since "nobody has escaped me yet" is _not_ a boast. It is *_the_* coldest, hardest fact of our entire existence.
It's like you said all he wanted was to be respected as death and he probably got most of his frustration out in the fight so he probably is happier and is going back to his non physical job as the literal force of death
In actuality his original whistle is in a minor key and that last one was in major. Straight up changed keys to reflect deaths respect.
ha lol
Nah, death wanted him to act the same way so he could get the fun of killing him.Thats why he regrets playing with puss
@@Alternateuniverse7157 that and to bring a bit more ease to the viewers knowing death has spared puss. he now seems less like a threat and more like a dude doing his job

He's not an embodiment. He *is* Death.
What a solid Villain. Even now I’m thinking about more ways his opening scene was amazing.
Not a villain he’s the grim reaper
@@Fawful6696 Right, Antagonist would probably be the more correct term.
Jack Horner is the villain
@Infinite656 that one is debatable. He pretty much states in the crystal cave scene that its no longer just a job, its personal for death, since he already dislikes the fact that cats get 9 lives and Puss wasted all of his while laughing at Deaths face. Its why Puss's past life says "That's cheating!" Because Death has decided to go against the natural order and try take his ninth life now.
@@shaitiriamate9622 If you look into it, it's part of his job. He lied. Yes it was personal, but look what it amounted to. Him telling Puss that it was personal is what set Puss straight. Death makes us value life. That is part of its job. And he went above and beyond for it with Puss because Puss really did not care about his.

4:51 i finally know what he says here. When I watched the movie, anytime Spanish was spoken, subtitles literally went "Spanish words".
The person who hired the translator: YOU HAD ONE JOB!
It angers me when they do that :’)
Deaf people who can read Spanish: "BUT WHAT ARE THEY SAYING"
The folks who make subtitles and who speak Spanish aren't even allowed to translate- because their bosses find it's cheaper to not give a shit. Which throughout this movie is wildly infuriating because Spanish words are littered everywhere and you'll have sentences like "You're not living up to the legend, (Spanish)"
And what did he say? 😅
2:47 his body language w his weapons is so fucking good, i love how they're just a seamless extension of his body!
yes yes, but that’s how you properly use a weapon, just like driving, you’re not supposed to think about it, you merely think of the apparatus as an extension of yourself, you don’t think, you just feel and do - something I’ve learned recently while learning to drive and I think it’s pretty cool that our brains can work like that
Fun fact: Death is not the villain, he is actually the hero, able to teach Puss well to take the right path.
Well, I’d say he’s more… morally grey then a hero
@@heavenseyes1211isn’t death a great equalizer to begin with?
After all, everything dies.
@@kylebeguhl8516yes, but now that I think more about this movie… he was an antagonist in it

Death just straight up be giving horror movie vibes every time he comes up
It makes sense since dying can be pretty scary
and i thought it was just me
He makes the main character of a movie suited for children bleed. Of course he's terrifying
If he were to have his own movie. I would like it to be like final destination.
I think part of it is his color scheme too
Death: "so why don't we end it here"
6th life: "THAT'S CHEATING"

Go ahead,R U N for it makes it more fun for me. >:]
It was the second life
The whistling is SO PERFECT it's so chilling i get terrified of it every single time im not ashamed to admit it but also how in the boss fight it gets intense and turns into this big music and in the end it's like more subtle and friendlier i love it it's so well executed
It has the darkness of death combined with the stupidity of how he lost those lives

I heard they were making a sequel and I underestimated the shit out of it. Like holy hell man, one of the best villains in a while!
I think most people underestimated this movie, tbh. The first film was...okay, not great, but passable. Then this sequel comes out of nowhere, when nobody was asking for one, and went absolutely ballistic with its story, message, writing, and visuals. It went the full ten yards and then some, and blasted expectations beyond the moon.
300th like
i think its because most sequels are really badly made, and most people didn’t have high expectations after seeing so many failed ones
but dreamworks absolutely destroyed all of our sad expectations and gave us THIS masterpiece
@@childesleftsock69yrago93Dreamworks is known for making amazing sequels though. A lot of fans were excited for it before it came out because it was a Dreamworks sequel.
Too bad Dreamworks sort of fell off with KFP 4. They were on a roll.
Basically, if you fear death you've already lost. If you face your mortality, you win.
Basically, Memento Mori conceptualized as a villain. I think that is a fucking awesome concept.
I think it has less to do about fear, and more about Valuing the life you have.
There's a Japanese proverb which states:
"Go into battle expecting to die, and you will live!
Go into battle expecting to live, and you will die!"
Final Destination is a subtly reference
The way the entire theatre gasped at 2:03 is something I've not experienced while watching a film for a long time. Death's first scene was already unnerving, but at this point he's not spoken since and has just been a presence we're aware of, him suddenly emerging from the shadows and cutting off another character's line caught everyone off guard.
You can hear his frustration when he said "COME ON PICK IT UP" on the last fight scene, he really wants puss to fight for his life

As someone who's had many lows across these past couple months, they kind where you just lie on the floor and physically can't get up, and who occasionally contemplated committing the don't, hearing Death get angry at those who don't appreciate what they have really gave me a new perspective on life. I've begun putting effort into seeing friends and communicating with people, and it's not even in an 'i'm afraid to piss him off' kinda way, but a 'that's true, i was given this life, why squander the small things?' kinda way. Maybe others have had a similar experience, but he really gave me a push to wanting to be alive.

I don't know if anyone noticed it, but in 2:30 the crack on Death's face almost looks like a skull. And as almost everyone in the world know, the angel of death is usually depicted as a skeleton in a black robe. I think it's a very sick detail!

Looks like a wendigo
Death could've easily taken Puss's life in that bar scene. Be just wanted a good chase. He wanted Puss to value life, and somewhat fear death. And this is a pretty good way of doing it. As he is seen scaring the crap out of him multiple times throughout the movie 💀
It's awesome how he literally just says he's toying with his food when he gets mad at puss for ruining it for him.

Also I love how he's not evil or good. I mean, he seem evil but then you realise he acually isn't, he's not good either. He's just a vibing when you think about it
How would you describe the personification of death, not the looks, but the aura.
"Hes not evil but hes not good either, hes just vibing tbh"

In the cave when Death is standing with the sickles crossed, it's the pose of Anubis, the dog-headed Egyptian god of death. Thought that was a cool touch. Also, I thought Perrito was a cool anti-death character. Had one life, and loved it no matter what bad things happened in it. Perrito is a domesticated dog, bred to serve. Death is a wolf, the wild ancestor of dogs, born to hunt. Lots of very cool layers going on.
Also dogs are the classic cartoon enemy of cats. So it's funny how both Perrito and Death are opposites working on Puss' character arc. This movie hits a lot of cool archetypes in all the right ways.
Indeed and yet sometimes it takes opposites to find ourselves
Correct me if im wrong but isnt Anubis the god of the dead, not death
@@chargewolf3102 The God of the Dead is usually the ruler of the Underworld in Pagan mythologies, not the personification of Death. In Greece, it was Hades, in the North, it was Hel, and in Egypt, the God of the Dead was Osiris. I’m not clear on Anubis, though. I know that he was the god in charge of the funeral rites and rituals, and he often led the dead to their judgment, so he probably was the God of Death.
I find it cool how he's less of a traditional villain and more just a scary as hell antagonistic force. He's not out to get Puss no matter what only to get defeated in the end he's just doing his job and once he realizes Puss has changed he's just 'aight I'ma head out' without loosing any of his intimidation...haven't seen a character like that in a while
Honestly,Dreamworks have been pumping out proper animated movies, but this is the gem of this current era....
The way Death was behaving was...well...he was just behaving like a force of life that you cannot evade. It is inevitable. You can gush some more life out of yourself, but either way,you will meet your end.
Also not gonna lie,the English and the Hungarian VA is perfect, just sooooo fitting. I am even questioning the mixed feelings in my head over this character's personality.
If Puss did make the wish, will Death still try to kill him?
I mean maybe. At that point if Puss has all Nine lives back Death might have just used Puss as a glorified punching bag for not learning his lesson in valuing what and who he has while he still has them. And he’d be justified in doing so in my opinion.
@@skybunny6258 I wonder if Death would establish his own Darwin awards list just for Puss?

I just noticed that when Death gets in his face, Puss does in fact flinch, just a bit. Partly to avoid accidentally stabbing Death, but he does. He's not lost his fear of death, there is just more to his life now.
For things like Death and wild animals, fear and respect go hand in hand.
I love that he doesn’t have a super deep voice, and I love that he’s so unsettling and smiley, he’s just such an impressive villain and a wonderfully creative take on Death
I think what I really like about Death is he's upset that Puss didn't value his opposite: Life. He's pissed that Puss wasted every chance and didn't actually care for any of them, gambled each away, and then couldn't have the music on his last one (until the end).
It's a balance, and Puss didn't care for it. So Death was either gonna make him care, or take it from him.
