My Great-great Grandfather's name was Robert Napunako Boyd. This song was written for him by Queen Liliuokalani about the feelings she had for him, as she left his home in Mauna Wili Valley. He was a sea Captain that became very important to Kamehameha, was the first Harbor Master in Hawaii, and the first King's Admiral for his fleet. The King gave my GGGF the land, and he turned it into a large farm, producing many essential produce for the Honolulu Market in the mid-1800s. The Queen and my GGGF had a love "interest", but after several weeks at his farm estate, she sadly was made to return to the palace in Honolulu because of her duties. She penned this song of love because of her sadness/love relating to leaving him. When it was first presented it was a very lovely tribute. But now, it is thrown around like a popular pineapple-eating-grass-skirt-wearing-tourist song completely lacking the intention or reason why the song was written. You are mistaken, this IS NOT the song the Queen wrote as she shed her tears for her people as she was put under ARREST BY THE ILLEGAL coup by the United States!!! Please read the real history of the stealing of Hawaii lands, and how The Kingdom Of Hawaii still exist, and was recognized this century by the World courts, the U.N. and the Hague. Thank you.

@@Lucifer-cc8qx They're over exaggerating. Every song she has written, were danced to with hula. So therefore, they shouldn't be so hesitant to connect with her sorrow. The song was originally written when Queen Liliu'okalani saw two lovers said goodbyes before they depart. This is before she transcribed later now referenced to her overthrow. Oh my God, her beautiful voice!
Beautiful. In fact, perfect. I studied the background of the song. I sing it to my wife at my yearly visits to her grave
Love it, so glad I found your site.... My late sister Virginia who died at 20 years old loved every thing Hawaiian.... Back in the 40s she played Hawaiian music on her Hawaiian guitar and always wanted to visit Hawaii.... She even owned a grass skirt.... Sadly she passed away and never got to go.... This reminded me so much of her and brought tears to me eyes.... Thank you...

@@onlylauri you have a problem,?....
Absolute perfection, I have heard this many times over the years, this is by far the very best. If this does not give you the "Aloha virus" there is no hope for you, Aloha
My third grade teacher was from Hawai’i and she would teach her class this song every year. And they would perform it at the end of the year along with singing and dancing to pearly shells. She died when i was in 8th grade. This song reminds me of her and how much i miss her. I know the day i pass i will get to see her again. I learned this song on the uke and i sing it all the time. aloha wau iā 'oe.
Aloha ʻoe, aloha ʻoe E ke onaona noho i ka lipo One fond embrace, A hoʻi aʻe au
Until we meet again Mrs Cook
How nice that you have such a wonderful memory of her.
It is no accident that Pacific Islanders have the most beautiful songs of farewell on earth. It has to be that as voyaging peoples they know far too well the pain of saying goodbye to loved ones who leave. They know too that beauty can ease pain. Just look up Maori, Samoan and Fijiian farewell songs.
I really don’t know anything about Hawaii but I am learning this on my ukulele! Such a pretty song! ❤️😊

This is one of those perfect times to click the gear icon and open settings for the video. Then set the speed to .75 for your learning/listening pleasure. Absolutely beautiful!
Every Sunday, the Royal Hawaiian Band plays this at the end of their concert with Piilani Smith dancing. Every one stands, just as they do for the National Anthem played at the beginning of the concert. The sadness is that we shall never meet again.
Very beautiful Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. It gave me the chills listening to this. Never realized how beautiful this song was until I heard the whole thing. Kahea has a beautiful voice. Makes me want to visit the islands again. Yes, until we meet again.
