This speech is a beautiful piece of architecture. It reflects LHL’s love for and dedication to Singapore . May he be successful in establishing a leadership composition and framework that ensures Singapore’s continued progress after he steps down as PM.
Thank you, PM LHL, for your dedication and hard work.

i understand the government concerns however the owners have their concerns too. The house should be freehold to protect the financial rights of those that work and paid for it. If government want to recycle the land to build new flats, or to demolish the flats, the government should compensate the old flats owner based on freehold value instead.

Problems would occur if individuals of freeholds refuse to sell their property. That would slow economic growth and complicate things. A 99 year lease is better for future generations.

China has a lease land period of 70 years. In China (where PRC was formed in 1949) there are already land leases coming to expiry. What does the Communist Party do? They auto-renew the land lease as announced by Li Keqiang in end 2017 (after some unrest in wen zhou). i do not know the details (the chinese may hve to pay a renewal sum??) though.

It is not about how long you can live, but that the values of the house will be 0 when the lease reach 0 years, regardless of location. This is not really good for people who are getting old as most are more vulnerable to financial crisis. They use their own money to paid for it when they are young and the money will all be gone when it reach 0 years. Even if they get a new flat, they will need to pay based on the current price of the new flat.

You won't live past the 99 year lease dude. Even if you buy one early at 25 years old, you will be 124 years old when the lease is up. Also, selling flat isn't the right way to deal with financial crisis. Where are you going to live if you sell your flat? Rent a place with the money from selling the flat? What happens when economy bounces back? The prices of houses will rise and you won't be able to afford owning a home. HDB flats are not meant as a tool to appreciate money, its supposed to be a system where people can all own a place to live. If you remove the 99 year lease and make all flats freehold, you can be sure Singapore will end up like Hong Kong where a few people become tycoons and the rest of the people can't afford buying a home.

Old and vulnerable? How old would a person be when his flat has, say, less than 30years of lease left? Do you really think that many people are going to be worrying about their leases depreciating the property value? Notwithstanding, the lease buy-back scheme and 2-room flexi flats exist for this reason, it makes a lot more sense to protect our elderly citizens with these long term plans than to give everyone 99-year leases
