Ren cuts through all the BS of life and speaks straight into our souls. I am 67 years old, and I have seen the rise and fall of a lot of very creative and wonderful singers and musicians, but I don't know if I have ever seen anyone who bulldozed their way through my emotions the way Ren has. He is at the very least a generational talent. He may very well be the master bard of my lifetime.

Agree. He's incredibly insightful for someone so young. But he hasn't exactly had an easy life, so I guess he's had to confront a lot of this stuff early.
What he does transcends music IMO, this just pure art.

      A beautiful comment. I think you're right.
I'm a generation or two younger than yourself, and I really feel this way too. There's no compare. I really am eager to see where Ren continues his journey. I think his teachers are so valuable, I really hope to see him continue to take off and succeed the way he has been so far - it's a message that can reach out and touch everyone, truly.

Apart from “Hi Ren,” and the “Trilogy,” “Money Game Part 3” is, in my opinion, Ren’s best work to date, and the bar he previously set was already incredibly high. It is an amazing and thought-provoking piece of performance art. Ren composed the music for the piano (except for the classical section at the beginning), as well as for the cello and violin parts. He also played the opening segment on the piano. The guy who came up from behind and replaced Ren is Charlie Woof-Bryne, an accomplished classically trained UK pianist who also occasionally plays jazz and pop.
This wasn't a total one-take but two separate one-takes. The video was a one-take up to the wheelchair getting turned around. They had to cut when the camera was pointed at the back of the wheelchair in order to prepare for the rain scene at the end. It could only be done once because Ren only had this one suit and his pants were about to get soaked. Moreover, the lavalier mic needed to be moved from his jacket lapel to his red tie and covered to keep it from getting wet.
Some people assume that this was a studio recording, that Ren was lip syncing, and that the lavalier mic was only used to catch the ambient sounds. Steve Dimakis (@stevedimakis7403) shared the following information gathered from one of Ren’s twitch stream, “There is no lip syncing…Instead there are a tonne of mics rigged up on the camera and around the studio…REN then goes through and mixes the recording from across every mic that recorded the audio.”
Robert Marar (@robmarar) explain in more detail, “In Knox's interview with Samuel the co-director and DP, it was confirmed that this is a live performance. Samuel….said that they needed to setup the pianist with inner ears so he could hear Ren throughout the performance…. the further away Ren got from the piano the harder it was for the pianist to hear him for the cues in the songs to know when the cord shifts took place.”
Andrew Lloyd Webber, after viewing Money Game 3, stated that Ren is one of the most unique songwriters and storytellers he has seen in recent times and that he hoped that Ren’s album “Sick Boi” would hit #1. That is quite a compliment coming from this musical genius and legend.
At the beginning of Jimmy’s life, “one year old and his first words were’ mine, mine, gimme’; two years, old he was walking; three years old, walking quickly; four years old he was running around the pavement of his city. Then, “40 years old, and he cursed the words ‘mine, mine, gimme’; 41, he wasn’t walking; 42, not walking quickly; 43, never running around the pavement of his city.” ROM (@ROMsquad) during their reaction pointed out the irony that Jimmy was focused on chasing wealth and fame only to lose his ability to run as a result. Not sure if everyone noticed but the violin and viola segment of the piece is playing Ren’s humming vocals from Money Game Part 1.

Yes, this is why he is our Bardcore hero. Obviously, Ren is a reincarnation of Shakespeare. Well done for spotting the similarity to a mafia movie; most of us don't notice that until later. Ren has mentioned the movie Scarface several times and he even looks like A Pacino as Tony Montana in the final scene. Thank you for this reaction, Beth.

I don't think that most people understand what kind of fantastic artist Ren is. He does have some amazing vocals in some video's such as his performance of a Man's World and him busking the song I Shot the Sheriff, but make no mistake, his talent if far more reaching. Some will try to deny this with other performers like Dimash Kuderbergan or Gabriel Henrique (both are absolutely phenomenal), but Ren is best under stood as a Bard. A true Bard is very rare indeed. History is filled with stories of Bards including Shakespeare as being one of the best know Bards in history. It has even been translated to many roleplaying games as a specific character who uses music and poetry and singing as a weapon and defense. A Bard is professional story teller, verse-maker, music composer, oral historian, sociology expert, anthropologist expert, psychological expert and genealogist who can express timeless themes and issues in a way that helps all understand their own lives and their own meaning especially with the struggles of life. This is not what a celebrity singer does and frankly with the music hype machine, they are a dime a dozen. This is a very special and rare thing that has not been seen for a long time. There have been other artists who come close, but from what I have seen, Ren is more reminiscent of the true meaning of a Bard. God bless you Ren and keep it up!

He definitely uses dramatic structure similar to plays. There are even acts! He also really understands the way that specificity in a story creates something that is more universal in its impact.
One thing I'm often impressed by, and it's really evident here, is the way he uses silence to create tension/anticipation--but even those moments we might call silent (with no music or speech), are filled with ambient sound and feel grounded.

    • @ian9033

    • @ClearTheRubble7
      @ClearTheRubble7 8 месяцев назад +1

Great comment! When you mentioned specificity and silence, it got me thinking about Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which Ren mentioned as influences. I've only seen bits and pieces of each series, but I was struck by the attention to detail, to seemingly mundane scenes like a man sitting on a park bench, eating a sandwich, gazing off into space with no expression on his face. Somehow, in the context of a crime thriller (and similar to Ren and Sam's use of silence), it fills the viewer with a sense of dread. I remember one scene in which someone drops an ice cream cone on a sidewalk, and the camera zooms in to film fire ants gradually devouring it--for at least a minute or two--complete with the sound of mandibles crunching. Ren said in an interview or Twitch talk (?) that he spends a lot of time getting all of the sounds, musical or ambient, just perfect for each song and scene.

Between his vision and the amazing filmmakers he works with, they leave no detail untouched. I'm thinking they could possibly be in contention for a short film Oscar nomination at some point. What they are able to do on a shoestring budget is unreal. I think he said this was a $30,000 budget but Hi Ren was under $3000 (my numbers might be a bit off due to bad memory or currency conversion)

His lapel mic is removed and they needed to bring in the string quartet. The water pouring from the ceiling, him removing the jacket to save it from a soaking likely a factor too. This IMO is a masterpiece about how nurturing can go wrong, where power overtakes money as the key motivator. I love all the Money Game stories, proper story telling, bard, actor indeed. Absolutely great reaction, thanks for taking a look at this one! I’m glad someone had the same visceral reaction as I did to the end shot 😅 You had great commentary especially about the theatricality.
In Ren’s talk on Charismatic Voice he was asked some theater Qs, and said he really doesn’t know that much about theater apart from some shakespeare essentials. It’s so surprising to me, of course I think he should delve deeper into stage for inspiration, but then again, he’s doing incredible things exactly as he is.

And the fact he does these in one take. What a talent. I am 60 and he is one of my favorite artists.....and his music as important to the world as any of the messages over the generations I have existed on this planet.

Yeah Ren is self taught on piano I believe. One of his friends said that basically Ren can pick up almost any instrument and be able to play it. He plays drums and a bit of cello too.
The shoot and audio was live with a very small cut when he tales the bag off his head and just one other cut when he was in the wheelchair for obvious reasons. The choreography of this piece is mindblowing.

This is another one of those songs where the video is as important as the song itself. Some of Ren's songs are great for the radio, but some like the Money Games, Tale of Jenny and Screech, and Hi Ren benefit so much from the visuals as well as the words. I can't identify with 99% of the rap artists out there. I have no way to identify with bangin' bitches, rollin' in money etc. I need what I'm hearing to make sense, to mean something more than material words. I get that from Ren. To be honest I gave up on rap 20 years ago, but I'm all on-board with this. I'm hooked on this. If this is where young indie artists are going, I'm going along for the ride.

Every time I see a new Ren video I'm convinced that at some point in the not too distant future he will have a Broadway residency performing his catalog with a full theatrical production. It wouldn't need to have a full storyline but could be presented as a set of short plays.

If you want to hear Ren sing without it getting so "real", The Big Push is an amazing band with original music and every cover they do has their own unique sound design and flavour. "Wade in the water/Nina Simone/Trouble so hard" is just pure soul oozing out in a street performance. Thanks

One thing I just noticed is there is an element of sleight of hand in his productions. The camera is pretty much always on him until he sits on the desk and spins the globe. And while you can see him doing it somewhat, when you see him next his tie and shirt are undone. Same with the gun at the end if you've seen the bts video. If you havent have a look.

I've subscribed to beth for years but i can't comment as my tv doesnt let you so ive swapped to my phone for this, but all the comments saying how great her reaction was made me giggle.
What i saw was beth pausing half heartedly a couple of times then switching it back on and getting lost in the video.
Don't forget she's a brilliant vocal analyst, all she said about it was 'i like how he does his oooos' or something similar.
Thats what ren does to everybody.
I wish she'd do part one, just to find out what that line is that I've heard 100 times and still cant get further than colonised.
I'm 61 though so it's probably my ears.
