You thoroughly explained the practicality of it all and how to follow the progression of books. Does not seem as overwhelming now, thank you! Planning to use this level with a Dyslexia Dysgraphic this year for grade 7’ish. He had used EIW and the grammar was not explained in a colorful enough way. Just a topic, a couple worksheets, and off you go…except that’s not how he learns. As you said the “out of the box” way MCT explains grammar with stories and pictures will help this hopefully stick in his mind! The why’s behind it will be nice to slowly go through with a more read aloud-story form. And glad to hear it works well with her IEW too.
I've been watching reviews and also viewing the Student books for Grammar Island online. It looks like it's mostly teaching and very little practice. Are there ample practice sheets in the student book? On the site the discription for Practice Island says that book comes after Grammar and Sentence Island because it deals with full sentences, so the student will need to know all the parts of speech and sentence parts before using.
Practice island comes after grammar island. It’s just a bunch of pages of sentences that the student practices the 4 level analysis. It’s recommend to finish Grammar island first as the student needs to understand the 8 parts of speech to do the analysis.
Thanks for such a helpful video! I purchased Island level (used) as well but have had a hard time getting started with actually implementing it. For some reason I always make things harder than they need to be. 🤣 Are you planning on using the Building language (vocab) book as well?
It was difficult for me to figure out how to implement it at first too, hence why I went in search of the implementation guides. I found it hard to believe it was just read pages and discuss it, but that’s what it’s turned out to be and it’s worked really well! I forgot to mention Building language. I bought the ebook version as it was a lot cheaper back before they raised the prices on the website.
I would check out the Facebook group Royal Fireworks MCT Language Arts Discussion. In the files tab it has multiple guides available to download. Some are schedules put together by people using the curriculum and some are guides. There’s also differences in page numbers depending on what edition you have.
What is the name of the Facebook group? I legit cannot find any group when I search Michael Clay Thompson. What comes up is only the page for RFP or for MCT himself. Thanks!
We actually used it. I forgot to mention it because I bought the ebook version because it didn’t come in the used bundle I bought. I used it the same ways as the others, just read through it while simultaneously working on sentence analysis.
Most down to earth review of Michael Clay I’ve seen. Thank you!
I’m glad you found it helpful!

I see you didn’t include Building Language book in the Grammar Island level. Is there a reason you skipped it?
