On this Preview of Engine Masters Episode 44, David Freiburger, Steve Dulcich and Steve Brulé test out a variety of carburetors to determine if carb size affects power. Also being tested is Dulcich’s carb swap-time in the shop. Will bragging rights be bestowed? - Авто/Мото
Oh great another 8th of a episode 💩
I will never pay for this...just put full episode on and put in adds.
we want free full episode
Agreed...
its all about the money. I'm out. unsubbed
k bye

I USED to watch these shows religiously... Ef you motortrend for taking that away from me.
Power nation is still good. Full builds!!
What a waste of time!!!!
lets HAVE A BEER and consider how far this channel has fallen
Max Lambert I agree. The early episode were amazing and very informative. These teasers just made me unsubscribe
I'm never watching another ad from this channel disguised as an informative video.
So sad how great it once was and how much it’s been sold out
This channel destroyed an amazing growth opportunity
I subscribed to motor trend on the app and to watch all these in full is really a great thing. They are still very informative. But what pisses me off is here I am paying to see it on M.T. and here it is, bk on RUclips, for free... where I see it was posted BY M.T. THEMSELVES! That ticks me off. They should have nvr left RUclips where it USED TO BE FOR FREE! Ugh! Ppl!
Sad, finnegans garage is where it’s at
I'm surprised they didn't make him sign some kind of non compete agreement...
Oh look, another preview. Keep it up and that’s a sub lost.
they won't post full videos here anymore, their goal is to get people interested enough to pay the $5 a month for motor trend on demand
I agree. It’s absolutely ridiculous.
The subscription is worth it.
Unsubscribed because of this video. Looks like it's going to be the norm. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Wow, another freakin' preview!

Use me as the "I really miss SPEED channel" button.
After watching I was disappointed since you did not show the results. Look back in history Rochester's development team built their 702, 704 and 705 series mostly 750 cfms and some as 800cfms. Why you might ask, well maybe they knew it was a good combination from their tests for all the productions. Test one of the Rochester 750s and to one of your Holley's 750s now that would be interesting.
I wonder if the fan in the air hat impeded flow or caused a change in vacuum throwing off the determination for the proper carburetor size.
Man I would really like to see the rest of the video.
This is just odd, its natural yet not natural. Wont be watching it again, was brilliant back in the day.
I'd like to see one where they compare carbs of same CFM with choke assembly installed, choke assembly removed, milled choke tower, and one manufactured without choke tower
kkoratda : Makes no differnce except one CFM.
❓🤔 Or compare carbs of equal size, but from different manufacturers and designs. I recently watched an "Uncle Tony's Garage" video discussion of how Holley is getting out of the carburetor business altogether, and which 'other' aftermarket carb companies will start producing equivalent replacement carbs for Holley's most popular designs(hint: Edelbrock are going to start producing a new & improved copy of Holley's best carb).
Edelbrock's current most popular carb design is based on the old school Quadrajet, and Tony pointed out how the Quadrajet design is perfectly adequate and reliable for use in factory muscle cars and 'mild' hot rods. But, not necessarily for higher horsepower engine builds, because(according to Tony), the Quadrajet carb does not flow nearly as well as the Holley design, even if both carbs are rated as both being the same size.
Tony said that Quadrajets are only "theoretically" capable of flowing at the advertised volume, whereas Holley carbs WILL flow at the advertised rate. That's not even to mention the float bowl/gasoline supply/heat issues that led to Carter carb company designing the "Thermoquad" carburetor, which was then installed as factory equipment on many Mopars.
Since the most common Edelbrock carbs are basically slightly improved Quadrajet copies, their advertised flow is also limited when compared to Holleys. But since Edelbrock is set to start producing a Holley copy, it WILL flow as well as a Holley carb, and it will be a better choice for high-er performance street rods and racers, when compared with the standard Edelbrock/Quadrajet version.
Therefore, it would be great to see an engine dyno test like ^this one, but comparing equal sized Edelbrock AVS2 vs Holley vs Street Demon(improved Thermoquad), etc.
Yay another preview!
Richard Holdener puts these chumps on the trailer when it comes to the nitty gritty, Richard isn't genuflecting to anyone in the industry as far as I know and he keeps his channel interesting.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I LEARNED SO MUCH.
The personality’s are one of the biggest thing I like about this show.
Check out Steve's hair.
I would love to see you guys use a predator carburetor and test it out see what you can make it do at its Max
“It’s not a Liberty Bell Steve, it’s an air hat.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hate that Motortrend is barriering the content. These previews are a kick in the balls for anyone who actually liked this content before it was ruined by Motortrend
Was that Father talking? "it's not the liberty bell Steve. It's an air hat." Grumpo lol
Dulcich looks like he’s ready for his job interview.
im doing a 383 vortec plan on doing a carb any suggestions on size will be running a cam stock heads and a dual plane intake if i can find one. and for the cam i plan on going for straight torque since its going in my 98 2500. TIA
Love these 3 guys👍👍👍
They used to have seasons worth of this show FREE to watch on RUclips, and they’ve removed them all and given it back to us in small chunks. 😢
That's 5 minutes I will never get back.
Lmao this channel is so dead.
I run a 680 QFT on my 340 that makes 367/359 to the wheels. I tried a 750 and it made 2-3 more up top but I like the throttle response of the 680 on the street. I go to the track 3-4 times a year.
I just got a 680 QFT for my Olds 355 and I’m excited to see what it does
I need some help finding out which tunnel ram and which carburetors to put on my 496 anybody help me I'm lost
How long do you wait between wot runs?! How long does it take engine to cool after a single wot run?!
The funny thing is that they are breaking youtube guidelines by posting links in the description that diverts traffic from RUclips to a competing platform
Have any of you guys tried the new Edelbrock 750 4150 4 bbl??
340 six packs around 1000 cfm, ran a 750 double pumper on my 69 383 roadrunner, little bit of tuning it out performed the 650 dp
hope you making lots of money !!! I'm not paying, was a grate show !!
I can't watch this episode down here in OZ, but I see on the Performance Improvements blog the 650 flowed 600cfm at 1.8" of manifold vac and the 950 flowed 618cfm at 0.4" of manifold vac for 1.1 additional horsepower. What are we missing here, manifold vac at WOT isa pumping loss, 18 cfm more flow is additional power, yet we only get 1 horsepower. ????
You mean the 750 CFM flowed 618- CFM??? NOWAY!?
I got a 79 Chevy Malibu it's got a 360 in it Chevrolet 4 speed 373 big camshaft 5 25 camshaft left I want to know what size carburetor I should run on it
Just imagine if you had to pay for this episode because you enjoyed it...........
RIP Roadkill / Dirt Everyday
What do you all think of a flatplane crank Cummins diesel, Lingenfelter did some development with an ls in 2011 but I think the rpm rate with boost and possibly an upgraded bottom end would make that thing preform beautifully but also seems like a dangerous combo though. Amd let's all be real motor trend subscription is only $5 a month so just sign up it's not that much
I have a Chevy 355 with a 650 Harley back and secondary off idle about 2,000 rpms the backfires through the carburetor I put another car rear on it and don't do it what could be a problem with the 650
Who watches this on demand? I like them and the series tough to spend that few pennies so.e how I feel a disconnect in what they do now.
My 87 Camaro had a 305 vortech. I bought it a Holley 650 Quick Spit. It worked way better than the 750 Quadrajunk it came with.
@Dave Micolichek I know. I gave it to my uncle and he modified it to work as good or better than a Holly. He just started ripping parts off and taking a drill to it. He put it in his S10 and it was faster than my car. He had a built rear end to help.
Of course 650 better on 305. 750 too much.
@@GJ-DTdepends on rpm , a higher rpm on a 302 or 305 pulls more air. 7700rpm on a built 302 would need a 750
Any carb rebuild videos?
why i cancelled my print sub. Great job marketing asses!
Dulcic has a HAIRCUT!!!
I can't believe they left us hanging..
I think I've seen this episode before and the test results as far as the 750 Holly was concerned was pulling out 719 CFM. Following a whole 31 CFM short of the 750 CFM Mark. Not good.
Missing the days where you made all that content on RUclips. Hope someone else's could do what you use to do. Maybe a Engenering explaining match up with some good engine builders, so we can learn more about engines and the science behind
if you really want the pro dyno stuff, that costs money. tho richard holdener does a great job for free. as for advice on building cars cheap....there's a ton of shade tree mechanic channels out there. UTG, VGG, Junkyard Digs, DD Motorsports, more I can't even remember. of course, there's also problems with dyno results.
you can rip an LS out of a junkyard, slap on a 3 inch exhaust, and talk all day about cheap HP inside the dyno room. but try putting that into a car--oops, gotta get a different oil pan and serpentine belt system. the long tube headers won't fit. it needs a car intake, and that's not sitting on the shelf like it did at the dyno. then you have to pay someone to tune it. and its no longer running an electric water pump and its breathing air that's not 60 degrees, but 100.
golly, where'd all that cheap power go? :)
Richard Holdner provides the same content on RUclips for FREE , taped literally IN THE SAME ROOM , on the same machine !
How to tune carburetor and distributor... make a video for this
Yep that blew!
WELL WTFS HAPPENED? 😡
I have always liked watching these guys but sorry im not paying, there is plenty of dyno stuff to see on you tube for free and who knows if the 750 was that good i just may of bought one for my engine.
You can control the character of an engine with the size of the carbs. Max torque is at a gas speed of 250fpm. My friend modified his Austin Mini, which should have produced 34bhp at 5,800 rpm to produce 20 bhp at less than 2,000 rpm. This was for a sport known as trialing. Driving up muddy hills with production cars with road tyres. It was rubbish driving there, but man could it climb.
I think it's time to change the leadership at motor trend. The Stars in motor train are fine but the top end has to be changed out!
Can you test coilpacks or ignitions? But I am more interested in Coilpacks. The throttle bodies. you know, The modern stuff.
Fun video
What is a good 4bbl carboraitor for a 318 motor i got a 1993 dodge Dakota I'm looken for top end speed
600 doublepumper Holley
600 v.s for street and daily drive if you want all out performace with mods i would say 750
..
I love this show. I learn stuff, I win arguements with this ....
I learn stuff....
Question; whats the number on a 350 ci. With a 650?
This isn't proof of anything just like dyno's aren't proof of anything, first off if you take the same engine with the same fuel on a day with the same exact atmospheric conditions and run it on different dyno's you'll get different results, there's a myriad of reasons for that, dyno's aren't the "etched in stone" thing that people think they are.
And what's really problematic about them doing this as a way to determine or "prove" what the best size carburetor is for any given engine is that dyno's don't tell you anything about throttle response, ask anyone who builds road racing machines and they'll tell you that losing throttle response for the sake of a few horsepower on the top end is a stupid trade off that'll get you lapped by the leaders every time.
@@dukecraig2402 the only ones racing dynos are Fred Flintstone & Barney Rubble !
Just turned it on but I would start with an 800 cfm on a 383. I'll see how it ends.
I got a 650 speed demon on a 383. Made 511hp and 492 tq. That good?
I would think that air speed has a big part to play n carb efficiency. As the carb gets bigger the air flow speed is going to go down.
Motortrend your isolating yourself
Anyone notice that since motortrend took over velocity channel they killed on demand. You now have to pay per episode.
What about HEI vs Points ignition system. Just to see what the difference of horsepower.
Or if MSD is really worth the money?
Nice number. I completely missed it
Would the high flow characteristics of an LS head typically bring the requirements up in CFM? I have a 4.8 LS and a 650 edelbrock to run on it. based on 292 ci and 7000 RPM the calculators suggests 500 cfm. Any thoughts?
clean cut Dulcich
Dang homeboy cut his hair
What?! No big stainless bowl from the department store for a carb hat like in the air filter shootout?! And here I was ready to make a joke about Dulcich always acting like he's getting ready to toss Freiberger's salad.
Hey Steve
Lookin good on there, knowledgeable as always
Props from Montana
You can't scream if you can't inhale!
Tell that to to Woke leftist, about George Floyd.
If you yelling out, you breathing in and out.
Just take it down LMAO 🤣
Yeah leaving RUclips to go start your own over on motor trend was probably not the greatest idea..... Other people did other things like selling merch and sponsorships an collaborations with others
... Plus I can't just broadcast it to my TV from your guys's website or from your guys's app which RUclips allows you to do and most smart TVs do not have motor trend as an app
Roku has a MTOD app.
What kind of question is that?? Bigger carb = more fuel and air = more power. If you want fuel efficiency... you shouldn't be driving something with a carburetor. Drive a fuel injected.
Dead Baron
Yes and no. Their 383 ran great on the 650, slightly better on the 750, and started to get horrible loses at 850 and 950. Dulcich brings this up when discussing using carburetors that were too small on a big block, even though he’d incorrectly postulated that the 383 would do better at 950 CFM.
A constant thing to remember is that an engine is an over glorified air pump, if it’s only moving ~650 CFM of air, carburetors designed to flow more air will not properly atomize fuel and begin to suffer on torque and horse power.
Ultimately, it became the same problem of picking the correct diameter exhaust for an engine. You want small enough to keep velocity high without restriction and large enough to be free flowing without losing velocity.
Also, fuel efficiency was a bit of a misnomer, Brulé corrected them several times that they were looking at VE - Volumetric Effeciency. While the 850 and 950 made similar power they consumed far more fuel in order to do so, making them far less efficient versus the 650 or 750.
Not really. You can over carb an engine for the cam, heads, and intake manifold combo. Making it run worse and become less efficient.
Of course it matters based on the volumetric efficiency of the engine.
Anyone remember Speedvision?
Pls bring them back
What about doing a test comparing octane boosters and if they actually work? Higher octane fuel isn't available at the pump in my area.
why don't you guys do a engine masters on tuning the idle transition or low speed circuit by changing the size of the idle feed restrictions.. totally changes the throttle response from idle thru 1900 RPM when the primaries boosters start to trickle fuel in.. hold the throttle steady just below the RPM the fuel starts trickling from the boosters and look at the air fuel ratio.. if its rich.. you need a smaller IFR.. if its lean you need a larger IFR.. this is measured at 1600 or 1700 RPMs..
What's the specs for the 383
This came out weeks ago.
Are You sure that it is at 4:30?
Might try starting at 4:28 then slow playback to .25
Sure! The biggest small one for the most vacuum.
You know were you can shove your part video

It’s not the liberty bell it’s an air hat Steve! Ha
I've been watching religilously for a long time. No more... I'm out, guys!
Thanks guys.Keep up the good work.
What's the story here? This stopped in the middle of the video.
Bald guy forgot to change his tampon this episode
Wasn’t there a twin to this episode last year? How many more carb/intake comparisons on a sbc do we need to sit through? It seems most guys aren’t even building this stuff since 8 years ago. Camarocraft revisited😂
Make a wall to wall Edelbrock promo and we'll watch. Charge a sub and we say no...p.s. Steve's hair looks great.
man Steve is looking good with short hair
We forget that there is 14.7 pounds per square inch of air pressure helping with the pistons draw of air into the cylinder, otherwise the 4 stroke engine would be a real dog for torque and horsepower !!
First time I've seen Steve that he didn't look like a beach bum
Motortrend killed all these shows. Engine masters, Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, etc.
So literally came here before even watching a second of the video to make a prediction....theyre going to cut the video just before the dyno results of the second run with a different carb...
You saved me a few minutes of life! Thanks! ;-)
