When I tumbled rocks as a kid, I didn't know about tumbling rocks of the same hardness. Occasional disappointment + occasional joy = genuine surprise.

There are some dry polishing machines but rotary tumblers are not those things 😂...woooooooooow

Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, unless you're polishing rocks.

I bought a tumbler for my daughter several years ago, but her dad took it so we never got to see anything at all 😢

My first batch is in final polish stage and my second barrel just started stage two. I started with two barrels of landscaping rocks that all looked like they were good tumbling candidates after one week of stage one I took out a few rocks that were too soft, and topped off both barrels to replace shrink, after the second week I was able to pick out enough rocks that looked ready for stage two to split the batch. Week three was one barrel of stage one and one of stage two. Fourth week was a stage one and a stage three. Most recent cleaning I went ahead and put the last stage one group into stage two and started polish stage on the other group.
My polish barrel is a bit light on stone so I'm hoping it polishes without too much new cracking or chipping.
I think with the next batch I'm going to run extra rocks through so I don't end up reaching stage four with only half of a barrel again.

Handy information! I remember doing some tumbling with my parents when I was really young, but I don't remember the outcome. I need to look into this again. Is there a maximum size for rock tumbling?
Hey, I sent you an email about a week ago and I'm wondering if you saw it. I'm getting a purchasing itch and I want to cover all bases before I put in an order.

I did see the email and then got overwhelmed with a bunch of stuff. I'll check back in with it ASAP and thanks for the reminder 😅.
Maximum size? Hmmmm...depends on the size of the tumbler and I highly recommend varied sizes in a tumbler. Definitely don't let any one piece get, say, larger than 1/5 of the barrel size. The rest need to be small though.

Thanks for sharing! If someone doesn't have ceramics for extra fill for the last stages, woulld quartz chips work?
