This song was released in 1999 and later added to the 1998 album Oceanborn. This is the band's second album. "End of an era" was recorded in 2005, it is an incredible dvd. Another incredible DVD with Tarja is "From wishes to eternity", the first of the group. In addition to these official dvds, you can also find other good Nightwish shows with Tarja here on RUclips, like the "Summer Breeze Festival - 2002" show, for example.
I ask you: Does it make sense to "release" it in 1999 then "later" add it to the album in 1998???

This version was a release of a remixed version. On ONCE. There was the 2nd official video. 2004. This is the same gown and necklace from the video. The video was shot in studio. With a battle of knights in armour. With the boys in armour. Tarja an Angel, possiblly angel of death. Taking the fallen to heaven.

If looking for Anette, Amaranth plays to her strengths as a song that does not involve targeting Tarja. Pure fantasy piece I recomend.
Simply a beautiful song very suitable for Tarja's' voice.
This whole concert is awesome, I own it on blu - ray. High Hopes ,sung entirely by Marco Phantom of the Opera and Slaying the Dreamer and Planet Hell are standouts in my opinion...🎤🎸🎙🎹🎵🎶🎼

Hi Constance! Nice to see you again! I love "Sleeping sun", it's one one of the most beautiful songs from the Tarja aera. Some other beautiful songs with Tarja are "The Siren", "Beauty OF the beast" (OF is importand, there's an other song with ....AND the beast) and for sure "Creek marys blood" from the same show you've seen, you really should see that song, i'm sure you will like it! I think this End of an Aera conzert was in 2005. But there are many more beautiful songs with Tarja. Some songs with Anette are really good, but look/hear the studio versions first. I will not write bad things about Anette so i don't write more, but i don't like her live, i'm sorry, but every persons taste is different. I wish her only the best, not every singer is Tarja and for sure Floor with her abilitys, skills, range and power live. One of the 2 - 3 songs i like with Anette live is "Scaretale", a little bit crazy - scary song, maybe you like it too.

I mostly agree with Werner, also with his taste, just want to add "Meadows of Heaven" by Anette lets not miss that one (studio ofcourse)... i even played that one at my mom's funeral...

A live performance or is there an official music video, I cant seam to find one that appears to have good quality - though I can only go on visual as I don't want to listen to the song so maybe the visual is poor but the sound is good on the lives I find??

LOL, if Tarja is singing it, it's an older song since she was the first singer and departed in 2005, but she does have a beautiful voice and this is one of her best songs. Look forward to you listening to Annette.

Before she was fired the troubles between Tarja and the other NW members reached their highest point with this live DVD. Nevertheless this live performance The End of an Era is one of their best ever made. Especially the beautiful song Sleeping Sun on this DVD, which actually already existed for six years. Nightwish + Tarja Turunen equals to 1 + 1 = 3 those days. With Floor Jansen as third female vocal singer the revival of Nightwish luckily happened. Although Anette Olzon as second female vocal singer did her utmost, the chemistry was gone for a while.

One of my favorite songs from Tarja. It might be sentimental but I prefer Tarja's version.
I love Floor of course, but I prefer this with Tarja too. She sings those higher notes with such an ease and clarity. Just lovely.
I point out facts for new people to Nihhtwish. This was recorded on October 21, 2005. Helsinki Finland. Last night of the ONCE upon a tour. It only became end of an era after they fired Tarja. Much easier then actually fixing their toxic behaviour.
It was always planned for a DVD. Which came out summer 2006.
You hear in the background London's Metro Voices Choir and the London Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Part of the £1.7 Million they had as a budget for the album and videos. The success of Century Child (2002) justified the budget. This was the 5th full album. Tarja was a co founder with both Tuomas and Emppu not just some singer hired to sing with them.
They were not even going to be a metal band ( and yes I see criticisms they are not metal anymore, no comment) until they heard her powerful voice that goes beyond just the folk/fantasy band that they were thinking of. Adding mixes of power metal, ballads, and symphonic sounds/techniques to their repotoire as Tarja finished her schooling in German musical theatre/Lied singing. Also called Chamber music. The training how to project emotion and power without amplification so to be heard by the audience. Acoustics to bounce the sound part of it.
Side note. If you ever heard opera singers use their full voice into a mic at close range...you understand why for a small theatre it was not needed.
Now that won't work in an arena and with amplified equipment. They need mics to feed back the music to an ear piece so as to keep time.
Anyway from 1996 to 2005 Tarja was the frontwoman for the band.
Shortly after forming Emppu did bass as well until they hired Sammi. And after he was fired in 2001, Tarot frontman and bassist Marko was hired. He too has training in classical singing. The visual and the audio differences were played upon in their 4 years together. Marko left in 2021.
Also on early tracks Tuomas did some backing vocals between hiring guest singers and hiring Marko.

That is the 1st era.

Tarja was invited to sing the song along with the original guest vocalist Tapio Wilska. And oh boy do they have a most interesting version.
Let me make one thing clear.
In her amazing solo career you find that Tarja loves to experiment with different styles and genres and techniques. This was a fun version I won't spoil.
Also there is another version of Sleeping Sun. She teamed with fellow Finnish musicians Steve n' Seagulls on their show to do a blue grass version of this song and of her solo hit I walk alone.
Pay no attention to those saying she lacks versatility. 😂
And for the record Floor Jansen and Tarja Turunen have been friends since 2002 where Floor's then band After Forever 1996 to 2009 opened for Nightwish. When Anette found out she was pregnant and would have to take hiatus from the band, it was to Floor the band reached out. She was their friend too and as A.F. had disbanded she was not under contract.
Now before accepting the offer she went to Tarja for her blessing as she cared for her friend and her feelings on the matter. Obviously not wanting to hurt her friend. Well she got that blessing and albeit a few months before it was planned Anette had to leave over Xmas instead of spring and Floor joined the band on stage with 48 hours notice.
It worked out for NW who made her a full member after 2 years i n 2012.
Floor just announced her first solo project while NW is taking a break. Not left, not disbanded. The best news is that to this day Tarja and Floor are still good friends and have worked together since.

My favourite. Floors vocal colouring palette and dynamic range means she manages to own it without even trying, and in fact, I think she was trying not to.

Yes please, that is one of Nightwish most beautiful ballads.
Indeed one of the few songs where I prefer Tarja over Floor. In this song Tarja's operatic sound just fits better.
BTW This is the original version, Tuomas didn't want to make this song at first, was asked to do song about Lapland, and nature. He hated this song at first, and what u know it became greatest hit by NW of all time.

This was originally released to coincide with the total solar eclipse in August 1999 - released a week (well, 9 days, to be pedantic) before the actual event which took place on the 11th, on a 4 track EP. I actually liike that version better than this one.
My absolute favourite version is the one from Tampere 2015, sung by Floor. Her dynamic range in that does it for me.
You asked about Anette songs, and I think I may have mentioned previously that the one song which for me will always be Anette's is "Slow Love Slow", and it is far better as the music video, simply because Anette was never able to produce live performances to match her studio ones, at least in her Nightwish days.
I think every other song she did on her two albums was bettered live by Floor, who of course has that almost magical ability to be inspired to even greater performances by the audience - which is not to say that her studio performances are in any way lacking, as they clearly aren't, it is just that live, there seems to always be that additional energy, and the interaction with the audience is a great bonus in those songs which allow for it.
Clearly, the huge range of styles she can sing in and seamlessly transition between is a major factor, allowing her to colour her singing from a huge palette, with sometimes each line sung differently, and even within a line, a gentle brush stroke from another style really enhances the quality of the storytelling. I have never in my life heard any other singer with such a wide variety and flexibility.
I was never a fan of Tarja's purely operatic style, and that meant it was only when Tuomas wrote some catchier tunes for Anette that I would stop and listen if I heard them, although they were not quite enough to have me as a fan, spending money on their records, DVDs and looking to see if it was viable to get to a concert.
That took Floor's arrival, and I've been wishing I could get to see them live at a suitable venue since.
Sadly, I have experience of the disabled arrangements at my nearest and theoretically most accessible venue, Wembley, and they aren't getting my money for such ghastly provision again unless I hear of a significant improvement in the way they treat less able visitors - jammed into a concrete box (only able to accomodate a manual wheelchair, so forcing me to drive and be assisted instead of using train and driving my disability scooter to the venue) up in the nosebleed level on one side, which is too narrow to turn around in and where you smash your knees on concrete if you have the temerity to want to breathe is not my idea of a great night out. Up there, the acoustics are appalling (probably no better than when the venue served its original function as an Olympic swimming pool) so you don't even really get to enjoy the music, with even songs you know well almost unrecognisable because of the echoes.
Floor's version of this live from Tampere 2015 is pretty darned good as well....you'll see it when you review that concert...

This song Sleeping Sun , Floor did during the Tampere venue and if was exceptional. Please check that out. Oh and the Tempere venue was in July 2015 and the Wembly concert venue was in December 2015. Do not listen to Anette live singing "The Poet And The Pendulum". It's terrible. She sings an octave below Floor.
