  • This episode of Photography & Technology Tools zeroes in on one of the newest tripods I’ve purchased, the MeFoto BackPacker Air. I talked about this Air model in a recent episode I did on all the tripods I own, but this one goes into more details about the BackPacker Air, what I like about it and what frustrates me about it. Bottom line: it is a great little - and light! - tripod and I know I will take it with me more than any tripod I’ve owned!

I have one as well and the same frustrations. Part of it I believe is my other tripods are the latch style. If I am using longer lens with the Em1 such as the 100-400 Panasonic I have to make sure the lens points over a leg as it seems to be more stable. Since I hike a lot it's a good comprise tripod when ounces become pounds after some miles and at 61 I feel it more LOL

The PNW Rider - yes, I've only used one of my OM-D cameras on it once and that was with the 12-40mm, so a somewhat heavy payload, but balanced and not real heavy. Love it's collapsed size - about same as my MeFoto DayTrip, but, at least, pretty full-featured compared to the short DT and way lighter! Nice little travel companion.

Interesting Outdoors - yeah really too bad. Otherwise a nice lightweight package.

Thanks for the info. I think the leg extension is designed for versatility. 1 click for one section, 2 clicks for 2 sections etc. Sometimes you just need a height of 1 or 2 feet. Is that how it works? I hate having to having to open a latch, pull the leg, close the latch ;9 times. On this one 4 clicks, pull the leg, lock it ;3 times to full.Time saver to me!

talltomtroyny - Thanks, Tom, for comment. Haven’t paid careful attention to clicks and release of sections but will now that you mention it. Love the tripod, but unexpected releases of center extensions do drive me crazy!

I just got this tripod yesterday, and is already frustrated by the problem where the 'neck' could easily unblocked. To make things worse, the problem happens also on the legs. I think mefoto really messed up on this one. Otherwise, it's a very good tripod for what it's intended for.

Paul d'Poulpe, thanks for comment. Sorry for delayed response but we’ve been on trip with no connectivity for two weeks.
Yes, the random unlocking of legs and stem make using this tripod problematic, Paul. You really have to twist each very tight. Nevertheless, the compactness and and light weight of the tripod is great.

You seem informative but all of the ahhs and ums are frustrating. Couldn't make it through.

Jeff Simbro, you’re correct. Once I learned more about editing my footage, I learned how to cut those “aahhs” and “umms” out. 😀 watch a video from mid- to late 2018 and you’ll, I believe, see an improvement.
