The direction is insane. So many incredible cuts. What was added wasn't time filler but full-on creative symbolism that added depth of meaning and emotional weight. This is how to interpret source material in a way that adds to and deepens the meaning of the original work.

My all time favorite anime episode as well!, second to Megumi Ishitani's "Fan Letter" short film by a very small margin! No matter how many times I rewatch this episode-whether through my favorite One Piece reactors, with friends, or by rereading chapter 1,000-my first reflection is always, 'I'm happy that I discovered this series and that it changed my life in a positive way.'

People who have watched every One Piece anime episode say this episode is the best of the entire series. It's definitely my favorite of the episodes I've seen.
This episode came out the day after I caught up so its the first episode I had to wait a week for what happens next so it's got a huge impact on my experience of the show

One fun fact: The anime didn't follow this naming scheme, but int he manga, chapter 999 is called "The sake I brewed, while waiting for you", then chapter 1000 (the equivalent of this one) is called "Straw Hat Luffy", once again, reminding us of the importance of Sake in this story, and also making a beautiful comparison. It's the only place where I think 1000 beat 1015.
