Had this many times living in Scotland as a kid. I moved to Canada when I was 25 and one of my Expat friends mother would always make this and any time I visited their house she would ask me "wid ye like a wee bowl of soup son" Tasting her soup was like a travel machine and instantly would transport me back home for a short while. Thank you Mrs Robertson & RIP
Lentil Soup | Traditional Scottish soup recipe :) 1325pm 16.5.22 or just generic veg soup.. you can add veggie bacon or sausage. i dont use stock these days - unless they have gluten free stock cubes...(?) i have honed my soup down re: costs. and, for the more finnicky amongst you penny pinching-wise, sweat off yer onions first - caramelize if required; and then add a pan of boiled/blanched potatoes and - again - sweat off; and then add a pan off blanched lentils; keep sweating off the veg; after which add water; blend down after water has been added... let it simmer. and then.... add another pan of lentils to mix... and cook through ie: after yerv switched heat off hob... obviously a more utilitarian and laconic version of the more veggie based soup you are making. but i am taking this from a poverty stricken perspective as, let's face it, there's not much variation in that regards...p .s actually those veggie slices you can buy of ham and chicken and turkey - they'd work well in this... or you can, like others, blend down the slices and make a shiphams like meat free paste... i'm that bored!!!!
When I was a wee boy in Inverness we had lentil soup for school dinners every week in the winter. The staff would have a big enamel jug and go around the tables just refilling everyone’s bowl over and over. Sliced plain loaf piled up high on the table along with big chunks of red cheddar cheese. Mmmm.... I can taste it now , even though it was 60 years and more ago.
You just brought back great memories to me of school days in Aberdeen Scotland, my Mum made Scotch Broth for my 4 brothers, my sister and I. There was always a pot of it, also Stovies!!🏴🇨🇦👍🏻😂
Thank you for providing a video that gets to the nitty gritty, no nonsense, just simple instructions, my mum (god love her) used to make this soup every Christmas until she unfortunately passed away in March, thanks to your video we can enjoy a bowl together this Christmas and raise a toast to her 🙏🏻 Thanks very much ❤
Simmer a ham shank for two hours to make stock. Add the ham taken from the shank, lentils neep, carrots and onion. No Rosemary. Lentils should be soaked for several hours and rinsed till water runs clear, prevents risk of flatulence, The ham is the sweetest most succulent of ham. Traditional Scottish recipe.
I miss winter here in Chile. Lentils and all the good dishes are made at home in winter. Homemade Ham, Sausages, cheese, Jam... summer here are the worst 😒
Brings back memories of my granny she made hers in a pressure cooker and one day it exploded over the kitchen xx but her soup was the best i miss it xx
I remember having a bowl of lentil soup for lunch one day while visiting beautiful Scotland on vacation a couple years ago. I think I’ll make this soup and surprise my husband as a little taste of Scotland 🥰
Oh I do have red lentils in the cupboard, my gran made a lovely lentil soup, actually any soup for that matter. Blessings to you and yours Ontario Canada 🐝🏴
Saw this lovely lentil soup and then delighted at the end of the video to recognise Arran!!!!! Spent sooo many holidays there over about 35 years! My aunt is on arran! Going to try the lentil soup ASAP!
Thanks misses... Like really, thank you!! ❤ I'm from Glasgow too, n ma mum passed away a few years ago n she taught me how to make the most delicious lentil soup known to man, but for the past year or so I can't seem to nail it n I hate not having her around to ask these wee questions but your method has definitely been a game changer and it definitely reminds me of my mum's homemade lentil soup again. White pepper instead of black 👌 and I had been using 180g of normal lentils (not split) to 2L of water and wondered why it was so watery.. had to make a flour/water mix to thicken it up and I feel like it dulled the flavour. But yeah, your soup tastes awesome!! 🤌 😎 Thanks again though ❤ Wishing you and you're family the best for now and forever!! 😎
I always have a pot of lentil soup going , it’s nutritious, slimming because it’s filling . I use lamb , beef , ham , chicken, bones as stock. It’s my favourite meal . Thanks from Edinburgh ❤
Only just discovered your channel. You’re my new fav. Love it! I’ve lived in Scotland for 18 years now. I’m never leaving! I’m originally from Jersey but living my best life in Dunbar. Happy Christmas 🎅 🎄
Hi Cheryl, about a week ago I randomly brought a packet of Red lentils to made a nice soup. All week I looked at these lentils and thought that I’d use them another day. Well then up pops a recipe from you for Lentil soup. By lunch time the following day I had finally used my red lentils and made your soup. What a hit it was with my husband and myself, beautifully tasting dish of goodness. Thank you so much 😊
Growing up we would often have boiled bacon joint on Sunday and make almost the same recipe lentil soup on Monday using the bacon stock and throwing in any leftover potatoes and carrots and swedes.☺️
I forgot about this soup! Mum used to make it when I was a child. Nothing nicer than coming home from school in winter to a bowl of this!! Thanks so much, I will definitely be making it this coming week 😊
I’m from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and made this ! So delicious 😋 I added cilantro 🌿 and had it with a bacon wrap chicken tender with it on the side ohhhh to die for !!! Thanks 🙏
I’ve made this lentil soup and it’s absolutely delicious, I will be making this every week ,thank you so much for the recepie I love this Chanel , I had this soup when visiting Scotland and this tastes exactly the same
My friend talked about his Nan making this soup, i found your video and made it for him, he was very happy, the only thing we added since is pearl barley, thank you for your video, i am making it again today and know i will make it forever more 💜
My favorite Scottish recipe. We used to have to grate everything by hand (my mother made us do that part). Now, I use my food processor. Ham bone with meat on it, carrots, rutabaga, green onions, red lentils , parsley and broth. Salt and pepper. The best soup hands down.
Delicious! you can cook this soup with whole sauseges and its fantastic as sauseges flavour the lentils soup and they become soft! add a good crusty loaf of bread! delicious!!!
Just made it for supper tonight. I didn’t have any bacon, but we had some left over chicken and chicken broth and the family loved it. I had some turnip....and what a great addition. I am enjoying your posts. I live in Canada but I play in a wee Scottish band over here. The band has been up to the north of Scotland to play. We were supposed to go back this year, but the darn pandemic happened. Thanks for your recipes and your shopping trips.
Hiya just making now I've used a nice soup bone from butcher, Poppy my fur baby can have when done lol. Used a beef broth instead of the veg one. Did enjoy when my gran would make when I I was wee in kirkcaldy fife. Thankyou for recipe & memory. Happy St Andrew's Day. Ontario Canada 🐝🏴
Thank you for sharing this recipe. I make soup once a week. I am allergic to celery-I know, odd!-and I love soup. Because of the allergy, I make soups. This one will be on our menu next week! Much love from an American expat in Gensac, France
Made this today and it is absolutely amazing. So so tasty. Haven’t had it in probably 30 years. Nothing like homemade Scottish soup when you’re in chilly Florida. Thank you Cheryl. ❤️💙❤️
Gorgeous recipe 🤩 I did it slightly different first time round. Cooked the onions in the bacon rendering until very brown, added 1 potato and little bit of turmeric, and had to substitute 1 cup of lentils for 1 cup of split peas instead (because I had ran out). It still turned out fantastically 🥳 freezes lovely too. My meals for the week have never been so good 😊 Many thanks ❤️
Made the soup, only change was some Leeks were added and it was awesome, took me back to a recent trip back home in August 2023 where they had the best lentil soup and this recipe made my year since back the taste of Scotland 👍
This afternoon, I made this fabulous lentil soup. I have made lentil soup often but this is by far the best. I also made your Morton’s rolls which were also first class. Tomorrow I’ll have a go at making rusk before making your Lauren sausage recipe. So glad I found your “What’s for Tea” website. I was telling my granddaughter about it and she said she’s be following for a while now. Thank you so much for these down to earth taste recipes.
I made this for my lot plus my mum and dad. 👍 they loved it even said it was better than the shops one. Made me smile 😃 so thank you for showing how to make it x
I just made it! I'm eating a big bowl as I type along with some nice warm crusty bread! I don't eat bacone, so I used a vegetarian one that tastes just like bacon, co although I don't eat it anymore, I do still like the tatse! Thanks for a fab video... this is just how my mum used to make it too!!
Making this soup right now and shared the recipe with some friends, will report back :) and how nice and cozy is it to have a pot of soup simmering on the stove, a promise of a warm comfort when needed :)
Just made this today, eating it right now. I often find the food I make a bit bland, but I followed the recipe exactly and it's delicious! Thank you so much!
Variations on this recipe are my 'go to' soups. My oldest and best friend used to make a version which was always known as School Soup because it was based on a recipe brought home by her daughter from her school cookery class. I keep a jar full of dried orange peel and if I make a soup with any type of squash such as pumpkin or butternut I put in a piece or two; it cooks down and gives subtle warmth and fragrance to the Soup. It's also a nice addition in a beef stew. I also love a home made pea & ham soup made with stock from boiled gammon or just ham hock with a mixture of dried (soaked) peas and frozen or, even better, if one has access to really fresh garden peas added pea pods. Your voice is mesmerising and such a change from the thin, high, tense voices of younger presenters. Lower and slower is the key!
Love this recipe! It was really clear and easy to follow. I have used this recipe twice now and everyone who has had the soup has thoroughly enjoyed it. Really helpful guide, thank you.
I could sit and listen to talking all day you have a beautiful accent, and i love your recipes, I live in Sussex so its nice to see your beautiful scenery cannot wait to see the snow i will be sooo jealous🤣....
Made this tonight as my first ever try at homemade soup. Swapped out the onion for leek and celery. Absolutely delicious. So simple to make, don't think I'll be buying any tins again in the near future. You've earned me plenty brownie points with the missus. Thanks.
I just made my bi-weekly almost one dish casserole, with beans, rice, lentils, vegies and beef ragout. But I don't have the same lovely accent as you do, so I watched your video and really enjoyed it.
I used to go to an orthopaedic hospital in Edinburgh every 3 months from birth until I was 18 and was regularly served lentil soup. I’ve made and bought so many versions and they just never stack up in my minds eye or taste buds but I’m going to try this for tea tonight - Thankyou. x x x
Being Scottish myself, I grew up with eating lentil soup - my mother’s and my granny’s lentil soup (my mum’s mum), although ma grannie mostly made Scotch Broth with flank mutton. I make lentil soup myself. Looking at your recipe, it is fantastic and love the way yours turned out. I use bacon like yourself, I use leek instead of onion but onion is great also. What I’m curious about is the white pepper. I need to buy it and add some to the soup. I’ve got mixed pepper corns in a mill and I don’t like some of the peppercorns in the mixed. I’m more used to black peppercorns. I love the fact you added swede to it which I need to do more often. I usually just dice carrot and finely chop leek - I also put a little mixed Italian herbs. I definitely want to try it your way as I like the sound of white pepper in it to give it a kick. Your soup looks delicious and good quality bacon you added.
I just want to say I love wacthing your utube vlogs it's give me loads of ideas am vegan am in supported living I have asperger syndrome and other difficulties and I have been down a lot lately your vlogs cheer me up no end thank you.
Looks delicious! I've been obsessed with red lentil soup recently. My mum usually puts bay leaves and marjoram into the soup aswell. Gives it a lovelly aroma. Great video by the way 😊
The biggest mistake I have ever made was not watching my mum make her soups. They were delicious. She made a lentil soup that she called Friday soup as it didn’t use meat. It was really tasty and she would add potatoes to help thicken it. Wish we could get rolls like yours here in the USA.
I made this soup and everyone loved It. Please keep putting your scenic vidios on. I love them. We are from Australia and have never been to Scotland/1 Love the scenery!
Thank you very much. I have just made a batch for myself. Being on my own I used less of each ingredient. I will get 2/ 3 large bowls. It tastes devine.. looking forward to tea time. Once again thank you xx

That looks lovely. I don't usually use bacon so I must try this recipe. I do like adding a pinch of garam masala to my lentil soup.
I added chilli flakes to mine as a wee experiment and serves it with garlic bread I made using a crusty tiger baguette, was delish 😋
I’m trying to eat all plant based, so I just added 1 1/2tsp liquid smoke to mine. Cooked it all day in the slow cooker.

Made this recipe today and it is absolutely fabulous. Thank you for the video……might go for another plateful.
Excellent recipe. I used a few strips of bacon and it came out fabulous. Thank you.
You make yours very similar to me Cheryl. I don't add turnip I use Potatoes instead. The smoked bacon makes it so yummy.
The biggest mistake I have ever made was not watching my mum make her soups. They were delicious. She made a lentil soup that she called Friday soup as it didn’t use meat. It was really tasty and she would add potatoes to help thicken it. Wish we could get rolls like yours here in the USA.
I'm going to make this this week. We are supposed to get a light snow tomorrow. I love the clips at the end showing us your trips.
