This was a great recap of the whole series. I never played the PSP games so it was nice to understand even more about how we got here. Even having just played GOW 2018 there are a couple of things I didn't catch on that you brought up in this essay. I'm even more excited about playing this game next week. I had very little exposure to the previous God of War games and this was a great recap of Kratos’ journey up to now and how great the story of 2018 GoW was. This got me way more pumped for Ragnarok, great job Barrett!
He missed GoW Ascension, but I don’t blame him it’s pretty disposable and largely irrelevant to the character’s arc.
I’ve seen a few God of War recaps. This is by far the best.

Incredible job on this retrospective think-piece Barrett. You shed light on Kratos like I have never seen done before.
Kratos killing Balder in the narrative climax of 2018 was so powerful because it was Kratos killing the metaphorical representation of himself in the past, specifically how he was in GoW2 and 3 when absolutely no words would’ve deterred him.
Also, it was ignored here but opening Pandora’s box corrupted the Gods which led to Zeus becoming paranoid over Kratos and the gods becoming a threat to humanity, which I think was written in part to make up for their lack of justification in Kratos’ actions and to make the player/Kratos feel good about causing chaos. It’s why he inherently doesn’t trust any of the Norse Gods. GoW3 also showed Kratos’ humanity/fatherly side in caring for Pandora who reminded him of his daughter, killing himself in the end wasn’t the only moment that showed his humanity, and he killed himself not to burden the responsibility onto others, but to ensure that the powers did not fall into Athena (who’s still scheming/looking for power so many years later in 2018). Yes he wanted to just die to rid himself of the memories, but also to prevent Athena’s rise.

He never implied he was someone else’s monster in 2018, that’s just you reading past creator’s intent. There’s no way of knowing if he feels personally responsible for his inner monster or if he feels there’s still some bigger ethereal force pulling his strings (since he can’t seem to die no matter what).

The first GoW was a legitimate masterpiece, it was the sequel that messed up the narrative, which is why Cory Barlog took it “personally” with 2018, he felt a responsibility to the franchise and to the one-note Kratos he set loose with part 2. Kratos actually did self reflect way back in the first game, when he protected an apparition of his family from a mob of himself. He wanted to kill himself but the gods wouldn’t let him die. Then Cory came along in the sequel and haphazardly threw all the blame onto the gods, the narrative justification was so poorly done that part 3 had to retroactively add lore about how Pandora’s box actually corrupted the gods all along.
This was really awesome, Barrett. Your video essays are always so insightful and in-depth. As someone who absolutely 100% loved God of War 2018, but has never played the earlier games, this adds a lot of context to the story that I didn't even realize and makes Kratos & Atreus's journey even more impactful.
