Great sketch, but silly song aside, Lenny can really sing. His space, phrasing and use of 'Blue' notes is excellent, he can definitely sing the blues!!
He is probably one the greatest talents come out of uk ever, he has the ability to tell comical stories that are side splitting without venturing into the use of the expletives that some others use to be 'funny' he can act in straight roles and now sings, he also retained humbleness and charm that most big stars seem to lose as they gain fame .
I got turned on to this blues man by s friend on Google he is from Sweden. love it from USA I listen to Albert King BB cousin. savory brown. Allman Brothers. Leon Russell many thx Sweden man
"The Blues is where you meet a beautiful woman!...And she's wearing a shimmering white dress!...And you take her home!...And you make love all night long!...And next day you find out it's The Pope!".
It's funny because this what some blues singers are like. They just do a rambling monoloogue while some guy plays the kind of rhythm a kid plays on his first guitar lesson.
Yes. It's from "The Secret Policeman's Third Ball", a series of charity concerts held for amnesty international. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Policeman%27s_Ball#1987_%E2%80%93_The_Secret_Policeman's_Third_Ball
on good form, lenny henry is one of the greatest stand ups this country has ever produced. this video is alright, though nowhere near lenny on top form.
Dilwyn Roberts-Young you have to like the blues, but I agree he's not good. Albert King, BB king cousin, arlo Guthrie is who Bob Dylan lived. I gotta go can not stand him or using our Savior Jesus Christ in vain. g-- damnit. he is ignorant
You know I've been trying for ten years and I still can't play that harp solo. So much raw talent up on stage there.
His solo on Live and Unleashed was his magnus opus 🤣🤣

classic lenny . i first watched this over 15 yrs ago a my uncles hous . wow good times . used to make me so happy
Seen some old blues guys in concert - and they are just like that! Brilliant.
Don't you ever sleep on Lenny Henry! He has me crying in laughter. Has a fan I expect the best form Mr. Henry. He continues to amaze me.

Saw "live and unleashed" right after we moved to England in the 80s and it's still one of my absolute favourites.
The man is a genius, so underrated - even by himself!
You are saying something there Mister !
I can watch this clip over and over again!
And now that someone has commented on your post... Again!
So do I
i love Lenny. i wish he'd come to the states. thak ypu for sharing this
The dance is wicked!!
You know I loooove oxygen =D.
I love those delays and deliberate repetitions, like old broken records.
It's more like the sampling, which was new back then in the 1980s (check out Chaka Khan's I Feel For U, then you know where this comes from)
the face alone! :)
This was television gold.
This was on an advert for a VHS tape of Robocop I have sitting somewhere, spent ages finding it, I didn't know it was Lenny Henry. Hahaha
Ha ha. Me too. I remember buying Robocop back in 87/88 and I do remember the preview for this at the beginning.

KENICHI SHOULDERPADS
If you say something witty or interesting I will respond to it.
It's funny because this what some blues singers are like. They just do a rambling monoloogue while some guy plays the kind of rhythm a kid plays on his first guitar lesson.
I'm sure that John Lee Hooker would have loved this.
Jeff Beck
Anyone know from wich show this is??
Yes. It's from "The Secret Policeman's Third Ball", a series of charity concerts held for amnesty international. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Policeman%27s_Ball#1987_%E2%80%93_The_Secret_Policeman's_Third_Ball
@staffsmole Woops.... Sounded like nuts coz of when he laughs :$
More blues than Keith Richards!
Sounds like John Lee Hooker.
He should have done "True Identity" in his real voice.
...sure do like your vegetation but your catapillars get right up my nose....
the blue blues!
theres a much funnier blues song better than this on lenny henry live and unleashed he does very good in that.
how was the same routine funnier exactly?
Or is this just you being a Beck fanboy?
I like his impersonations best.
Except when he impersonates a comedian. He never seems to pull that one off somehow.
Neither do you
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Words and humour really aren't your thing.
You're not Lenny Henry are you?
dated
Never.
Possibly the unfunniest man ever
I've just wasted six minutes of my life watching this rubbish! What on earth came over me?
A brief spell of good taste.
Rubbish?!?!? Are you crazy?? This is the best!
Rubbish?!!!? No, not rubbish, it’s superb!
