A Flamethrower For A Game Jam! - Devlog

- This yearly game jam hosted by Vimlark, just announced it's results. I landed in 15th place out of 200 participants, and this devlog is about the game I submitted. The game is a sci-fi wave defense game, and I made it in 3 days instead of the 11 days I was supposed to have, because making a game takes a lot of focus, and I didn't have time to dedicate to it until then. 😅

"Conflagrator" is a great name, considering the game.
A great feat of scoping, you made a great game in a short time, cutting the fluff and focusing on what matters.
Well done !
Thanks!
I'm honestly surprised I manage to do it, and after watching the footage back, I had a "game", by night 1. The rest of the time was just making it fun to play. That's the real time sink. 😅
Balancing suggestion -- as the flame gets bigger, have it consume more fuel per second -- not a 1/1 increase -- but like a 2/3 or 1/3 one...
This means that upgrading the flame is more of a trade-off -- and harder to abuse just growing it forever -- but still overall rewarding to grow it.
Interesting, how a lot of devs make flamethrower fire as a separate sprite, not a group of sprite changing objects, that approach seems easier
The way I did it probably doesn't look as nice as a particle effect could have. 😅
@@HelperWesley oh, ok! still a big fan of your games! keep deving!
@@HelperWesley Messing with this now. The issue with particle effect is no collisions though... right? How would you handle that?
Super fun game, awesome job congrats. Love the setting and what you created in such a short period of time was just super. Great vid as always.
Thanks! If I hadn't come up with the sci-fi game at the start of the jam, I probably would have used an office space with normal spiders.
I'm happier with this setting. 👀
I’d love to see your original idea come to fruition… sounds fun, it’s giving kinda don’t escape vibes in my head
Love the UI and UX changes you made to the game!
Fantastic! I really like the dark lighting with the lights of the flames
Awesome game, great devlog! I didn’t realize the art was from the Kenny pack, but I love what you did with it. Great work, and congrats on placing so high!
Giant alien spiders are no joke! Send crew to help immediately!
So is there a reason you didn't build the flamethrower using particle emitters? Too resource heavy?
I tried a few different times with particles in combination with a sprite object, but I just couldn't get it to look the way I wanted.
So I just ended up throwing my hands up and running with the base sprite object. 😅
One Little additional thing I would have added to your game is when the fire from the flamethrower hits the spiders, the sprite would change and showing the spiders being on fire and maybe have the lighting on them but other than that this came out great!
A multiplayer version of this would be interesting. Defending against endless waves on an alien planet, building towers, walls, traps. Sorta like COD: Zombies.
Good job, I wish I had that skill in GDevelop.
I think you should add a real map and more bioms with different enemies and a nice die animation for the enemies and bonfire to save your game and teleport to other spots ( tipps for your real game)
Great game, I played it a few times and it's pretty fun. I am watching your vids and they inspire me to make games in gdevelop but I find it a bit difficult for a newcommer like me in this domain.
I Scoped mine properly but introduced a bug at 12am before submission and didn't catch it :( hahah. But I fixed it up. I played yours it was fun :D
That's rough! I've definitely seen that happen before. But at least you were able to scope, and release a proper game, that's a huge deal on it's own. 🥳
I knew flamethorwers were the real deal after playing farcry 3 ;)
secondes!
❤🎉😊
Super nice vid ! Overscope is a common problem :) Can you give the font you use on the game please ?
It's called 8 bit operator. I passed it through a bitmap font generator and added the outline to the font atlas file myself to make it look more like what I wanted. 👍
Thoss spiders are literally just head crabs from halflife
Pretty much. 😅
I would have used the name "Flammenwerfer IN SPACE"
3:36 excuse me but who exactly is that in the number 16th spot?
Looks like a fellow named "Hatman_Is_The_Biggest_Nerd" 😉
Yo brother thanks for inspiring me to become a game dev… what do you use to make your art and animations?
I mostly use aseprite. 👍
Hello again.
You should use Vim in the VimJam
I've heard of Vim, but I've never used it. 🤔
I remember Vimlark talking about how he'd never heard about it until he started doing these jams. 😅
@@HelperWesley it's a good text editor, but it has a steep learning curve.
I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on YSort me and many others can never seem to make it work right and it would be a massive help
I'm trying to resists saying "Gamethrower" or "Flame Jam!"
Flame game for a jam thrower? 🤔
what are you actually using to make this? I recognise the engine but can't put my finger on it.
GDevelop. 👍
What was that thing you where on at the beginning to grab assets?
Itch. Itch has a bunch of free assets you can check out. 👍
what engine are you using? is that GODOT?
No, I use GDevelop. 👍
How do you make them spawn infinitely and in a random spots? I want to make my enemies spawn infinitely but outside the camera view
Use a timer, and every X second reset the timer. Whenever the timer resets, create an object as a point.
I usually use actual objects as "spawner" objects and the condition "pick random object". So they'll pick a random object when creating the enemy there.
@@HelperWesley Thank you so much and for getting back to me so quickly. I get really excited when you do a new upload! :D You deserve so many more views and subs for your interesting videos!
At 1m 45s you mention the problem with rotation. Could you clarify what you did to solve it? I currently have a bullet firing from Character.CenterX() and I wish to offset that to the outside of the character by like 4px
I'm sure There s a more elegant solution, but I cheated and doubled the width of the sprite with an empty space behind it and put the object origin at the center. 😅
@@HelperWesley I did edit the bullets origin to half the sprite distance and it starts form the center of the "Player/Character" but I have not been able to add anything to it to make it start from the outside. It ends up starting from an unexpected position that I cannot understand.
Fourthies!
Thirtees!
That's the age when your back starts to hurt, and your hair starts to turn grey, right? 😅
Mam what i can say
This game would took more than months if i try to make something similar and you just made it in less than 4 weaks
If I really want to dig in to it, I could spend months on this one. Adding particles, juice, better sound, more enemies, and so on. 😅
I just cut out everything that could possibly make it take longer than 2 days to make. (And I've made games like this before, so I didn't need to spend time "figuring" anything out, just put it together.)
@@HelperWesley oh ok that makes sense because im working on my game called magicnarius (magic+machinery)
A top down roguelike shooter
And yee when i started the project i knew nothing about the roguelike part of the game
Firsties!
Hey man! I'm an artist and game designer, would you like to pull something together? I already have some ideas and would like to show them to you, you might like them a lot
Thanks for the offer, but I like to work on my own, or with close friends that I already I know how to work with.
@@HelperWesley Well, if you reconsider I am here, no one comes we can become friends! I have some ideas that you might really like and I'm sure together we can really accomplish something important, either way I'm here!
Pleaseeeee add tutorials and walkthrough of making the game as a pod because its so hard to find good videos to learn gdevelop and you really inspire and make great games. Teach us gdevelop 🥲
