For those wondering why Tulsa...it is likely due to the Port of Catoosa which is one of the farthest inland ports in the world. Barges and large shipment loads can come up from the Gulf of Mexico into Tulsa via the Kerr-McClellan waterway. From the Mississippi River, then the Arkansas River, then Kerr-McClellan (Verdigris) into the port via locks throughout. Looking at the geography of Tulsa it seems impossible but I have fished next to massive barges from the Gulf not far at all from my suburban home in the Tulsa burbs. By the way, in the first minute of the clip they pass Cain's Ballroom. Legendary music hall and early home of Bob Wells and the Texas Playboys. Major acts that have played there over the years are countless. Tulsa has a metro population of 1,000,000+ which few are aware of. It is a great place for American history, music and nautical interests. Aviation is also a major industry and history here. AA's main maintenance facility is here as well as Spirit Aero and much more.
It's very interesting but honestly the port isn't that far inland. The Port of Sioux City is much farther and the Missouri river had to be channelized from where it enters the Mississippi to Sioux City which was only possible because of the multiple dam's upstream. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_River#Navigation It was actually a much larger project than the smaller dam's in Oklahoma and the lock systems in place to get to Catoosa.
From Sand Springs (Suburb of Tulsa, West) I drive my son to work everyday down 75, and in the fall and winter you can actually see it from the highway. Wish I had known you were in town, we would have bought you dinner. You mentioned the powerhouse at the end of your video. One of the main reasons that was built in addition to flood control was to provide additional power to the steel mill that was about 10 miles down river in a small town called Sand Springs. It was know as Sheffield steel for many years, but shuttered by Gerdau about 12 years ago. Now it has been largely demolished and turned into mixed use development. A few weeks ago they hauled out the last of the massive lathes from the mill. Hope y’all have a safe trip.
