That was a wonderful train ride and birthday for the birthday boy! You two make the most beautiful videos and capture the scenery in a magnificent way. I could watch them every day. The way you all have captured all the adventures on your trip is wonderful. You can go back and relive them any time you wish.
Happy Birthday and welcome to New Mexico. Er, nope. You stopped in Osier and turned back so you stayed in Colorado. Anyway, welcome to my part of our great country.
Best train I've seen in awhile. The engineer was very good with the steam whistle. Darn nice inside the cars and the lunch hut was looking real sweet. Thanks for sharing the views RIDER !
That train ride reminded me of old west cowboy movies with beautiful, wide-open and big land, except your video is more colorful and interesting. You sure picked the right time of year to visit because of the fall colors.
Their recently restored D&RG loco 168 did appear in a 1930s western and now more recently she can be seen in the trailer for the Netflix movie, The Harder They Fall where, as in her 1930s film, she gets held up again.
Absolutely fantastic video! I have lived in Colorado all my life(68 years to be exact) and have never ridden that train so thank you so much for taking us along for the ride!❤️❤️
I agree hole hardily with Abby, the one good thing about the pandemic is the spacing and lack of crowds. Great train ride, some amazing country there. Thanks for sharing this.
Absolutely wonderful video. Glad you could do it. In 1991 we rode C&TS between Chama and Osier behind double-headed locomotives 487 and 489. We saw 488 at the engine house in Chama on our way out of town. So glad to see it still in operation on your train. Highly recommend the Chama to Osier portion of the route as well.
You need to ride from Chama, the climb up the hill to Cumbres Pass makes the engine work so you get some pretty good stack talk. Looks like you may have hit the peak Aspen leaves. Georgeous! I always hit the lounge car. No ankle biters screaming and adult beverages. Even get to hang out on the rear balcony. Worth the price every time!
Glad you got to take this train and see this area in full fall colors. If you ever make it back here, be sure to take the full trip between Chama and Antonito. My dad ran the store across from the station in Chama many years ago when we were kids. At 17:58, that road on the south side of the tracks goes back into NM and a branch of it leads to a friend's mountain ranch.
You guys seem to really like trains. If you're ever vacationing/traveling along the East Coast I highly recommend you make a stop in Jim Thorpe, PA. They have a steam engine very similar to Cumbres/Toltec that runs every weekend, lots of hiking/biking trails, and a bunch of museums devoted to the coal mining industry from the early 1900's. There's also a few actual coal mines you can tour.
Hi Adam & Abby, Another great video! Looks like you were just slightly too late for the peak of the fall colors. Even so, it was quite pretty. At about 9:40 Abby repeats what your docent told her. It's actually a bit better than what she told you. Just before mile marker 296 it is possible for the locomotive and the end of the train to be in New Mexico and the middle of the train in Colorado. There is a similar opportunity between mile markers 289 and 290, depending on the length of the train. I can tell you, you two will have to return to Colorado and do the other side, from Ozier to Antonito. Both are spectacular, just different. Two possibilities: do it one day and return by bus, or do it in two days and spend the night in either Chama or Antonito, depending on where you start. Colorado is home for me, if you ever have questions for future trips, PM me. Be well & Best regards, Gottfried
We have ridden both C+T and Durango trains , both were awesome. There is some awesome scenery on the ride on into Chama however the last stretch there is a lot of down hill brake squealing and smoke , I wondered why so many folks were getting on the bus at Cumbres pass instead of riding in to Chama. Ha! The drive between Antonito and Chama has a lot of the scenery that y'all missed. The day we were in Osier for lunch there wasn't much left for seconds , barely enough for firsts , the place was packed! Good food though!
Great video, a couple of things to point out from a railroaders perspective, the guy shoveling the coal is the locomotive fireman sits on the left side of the engine aptly called the fireman’s side of the train., (the fireman is not the conductor.) the engineer sits on the right side of the locomotive cab aptly called the engineers side and operates the train. The conductor is the boss of the entire train, they collect tickets and are in charge of the operation of the entire train. The engineer can’t move the train without the conductors permission. Hope this helps!
Did this last September from Chama to Osier. That’s half way and you have cafeteria style lunch which as good. You can do the full route to CO but the half day trip was plenty!!!
I like to visit the live feed cameras from Friends of C&TS web cameras in Chama, the passes and Antonito. Right now there is heavy snow and 27 degrees.
Normally you have a choice, from either Antonito or Chama you can ride to the mid-station and back or ride all the way and bus back. Maybe because New Mexico is so unwelcoming to visitors now, riders from the Colorado side are not given the option of going to Chama, NM. I've only ridden from Chama to the mid-station and back. This is the first I've seen of the Antonito side, thank you.
Antonito to Cumbres Pass is all up grade at about 1.5%. Osier is about half way so on most operating days there is a train from Antonito and a train from Chama that get to Osier about the same time but the locomotives swap the trains instead of turning them. Chama to Cumbres Pass is 1.7% to Lobato Trestle then 4% to the Pass then down 1.5% to Osier. There is not much difference in elevation between Chama and Antonito but Cumbres Pass is a little over 10,000 feet. Antonito to Durango was built in 1880. Y'all need to make another trip to ride the whole line. Osier is accessed by auto with 4 WD. For end to end trips, a bus takes you back to the starting point.
Correction, as I shown in the video, they didn’t swap trains. They use the loop on the east side of Osier to turn the entire trains around. The Chama train left just as we got near town.
Love the Cumbres and Toltec! Too bad you didn't get to do the whole thing. The lower portion is really scenic. And if you leave from Chama, there is a 4 percent grade that makes the locomotive struggle, makes more smoke. Give you a reason to go back. I'm a photographer and chasing it north out of Chama is great. You hit it at exactly the right time of year. Really enjoying your travels. www.flickr.com/photos/lefturn99/30218196031/in/photolist-N3h9TR-Ne9Nnd-MZE3bs
I'm hoping 2021 will be better, I'm not going anywhere that you have to have a useless mask. Everyone has the right to do what they want on that so thanks for the video. Ive been wanting to do this.
The goats are Prongehorns... too bad that ya'll couldn't go all the way to Chama . I think that is the prettiest of all. btw Chama is pronounes Chaa maa
Thanks for taking us with you enjoyed it very much 🏴👍
Glad you decided to take the trip with the C&TSRR. Haven't been since 09. Thanks for the video.
Happy Birthday Adam. What a treat for your birthday. Thanks for filming and sharing. Cheers.
Thank you for the train ride in these crazy times. Impressive.

Cumbres and Toltec is my favorite scenic train. Next time you guys can do Chama to Osier.
Thank you!!!! I love train rides and a bunch of years ago I rode the C&T from Chama to Antonio and bus back to Chama!!!!! Loved it!!!
Happy Birthday Adam

We crossed the border 20 times during that ride
@@AbomAdventures - awesome! I didn’t realize it did that. Did you and Abby smell like coal smoke after the ride?

@@Wahian1 Thanks, very interesting...
Thanks for sharing. The history of this railroad is interesting.
Thank you so much for taking me along for the ride I appreciate you and Abbey. 😬
I did the Chama to Durango with my late father in law,,wouldn’t take anything for the memories, it was a beautiful fall day cool and perfect
That's an awesome looking train. I really like the car you're riding in.

Another stunning adventure - thanks for sharing :-)

Just remarkably beautiful! Great video, thanks so much. This trip just went on my bucket list!
WOW ! Awesome ! Cool ! Yeah ! Woo Hoo ! Best video yet. You got some great shots. I do believe that you have the makings of a railfan. Great job.

We took what we could get. Only tickets that were offered when we purchased was the ride we showed you.
I love how perpetually jazzed Abby is in your vids... and it's funny to think about how she also has that shirt that says she is "Done Peopling". LOL
Cool ride, it looked like antelope to me , happy birthday 👍
Looks like you guys are getting back home just in time to miss the snow
Talk about some gorgeous geological formations on that ride
Happy Birthday!!! 🥂🎂🍾

Happy Birthday! What a great way to wind down a great trip.
Thanks for taking us along! Really enjoyed the video.
Thank you both.
Happy birthday Abom
Hey, Adam! Another great video! There are speeder clubs which are privately owned speeders that you can buy and they do tours all over the country.
Happy Birthday

Amazing video! 😁
That was a great birthday present Adam , thanks for the great video guys 🥰👏👏👏👍🇬🇧🍺🍺
Awesome locomotive.... :-)
notice how the baldwin engines frames are for standard gage and adapted to narrow gage.

In Ely Nevada you can drive the train! for a price haven't done it yet but i will soon. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
...good maintenance and machine shops in Ely...

...you need to do the other half of this ride sometime...
...Chama is were the shops are including the machine shop...
staying over night at the chama nm is best. choosing the parlor car was a good move.

Did you guys at least stop up in Alamosa? Sadly the SLRG went tits up so there are no more excursions up La Veda pass.

Great informational video. What was the date u rode this train. My son and I want to ride it next year. Thanks enjoyed watching. 👍🙏👍❤️
the little town that you mentioned is pronounced sub-let

question??? is that track a working track in the 1800's
Yep, I want to say in the 1880’s is when it was built. It’s been in operation ever since.
@@AbomAdventures Yes, they carried passengers and freight from late 1880 until 1968.
That is what we call pronghorn or antelope for a east coast man

Hey Herb, that was the only ride available for us at that time. Still enjoyed it! 👍🏻
I think the wheels on that car need some machining...
Adam, check out mountainrail.com if you like train rides.
Antelope.
It's pronounced "Chawma", not ChAma!"
I saw some videos of Chinese gals wearing mask last year umm they new something was up . Or just over protective. It made me think ...
To reduce environmental pollution, Steam Loco should be replaced by Diesel Loco
