I remember having my first pint of Birra Moretti back in around 2011/12 when I was 19 and it was a phenomenal beer back then. I can only guess that back then it was imported. Seems to me that as soon as Heineken gets their hands on a brand they turn it to piss.
According to 'Rate Beer', Birra Mapelli is brewed at Carlsberg Lombardia, Italy.
It’s not
@@louisbeerreviews8964 care to enlighten us then?
Think it's brewed in Via Alona, which is a Carlsberg brewery. Where they make Poretti
Simon I agree with you 100% British brewed lagers are unfortunately very disappointing. I’ve recently discovered Franziskaner as a result of your reviews, unbelievable beer. I’m sticking to it. Thank you 🙏
It was the same for me with his review of 10 lagers and the Tsingtao came only second by a whisker. I can't now believe I might be buying a Chinese lager in preference to buying British, but British breweries I feel have let us down badly for donkeys years. Don't know why anyone would buy Fosters, Carling, Stella (not unfiltered) or similar when much better beers are available at reasonable prices. Even FeldSchlossen is good by comarison to the common brews and that's as cheap as chips. (not that chips are cheap now)
Great video Simon, definatly agree that the morreti is metallic in taste. The blade version is exactly the same. Aldi version is far superiour in my opinion. Everyones taste buds are different.
Drink the Moretti too forgetti your regretti
Aldi does some great beers/lagers. I remember buying some of their rheinbacher cans and they instantly became my favourite. They are even better in bottle form and are cheap
I will have to say that the Birra Mapelli is one of my favs, didn't really realise but it became my go to?!
Aldi are very clever at eking out the best value, Moretti likely has a huge advertising budget to tack on top of the costs so the Aldi beer actually probably cost more to make, so for that reason I’m not surprised it tastes better.
With branded items you’re just paying for the labels and packaging to look pretty and to see your favourite product on the telly; you’re not usually paying for better quality products. But people swear that things like Heinz are more premium than own brands. People will never learn. Yes I know Heinz don’t make beer 🤣
The Birra Morretti tv advert winds me up, L’autentica Italiana my arse
The Mapelli is a great larger for the money, saying that I also like the Morretti so what do I know?
I had the Birra Bionda from Lidl yesterday and that's was so nice to drink. Prefer it than the Birra Mortelli anyday. Give me the Birra Bionda 3/4 bottles on a nice afternoon/evening.
Absolutely agree!!! I only found the Birra Bonda last Friday and I tried a few Birra italiana..............no more uk brewed rubbish for me!
I feel like Moretti on tap seems to be a fair bit better than Moretti in the bottle?
You have to try Czech Pilsner Urquell on tap. Completely different beer to the bottle/can, amazing. Worth going to Prague for.
So do myself
@@Heaven-dy9ljyes
Just finished a sup torp of Moretti La Rossa , excellent for price .
Its very sad UK brewers ruin beers from different countries.
I wish M&S hadn’t stopped doing their Italian “mountain” lager, a few years ago. Superb beer, really lovely.
The Co-op in Scotland ( not sure about in England & Wales) used to sell a Czech Pilsner. It was as good as Pilsner Urquell and 2/3 the price for a 500ml bottle. Stopped after COVID
Aldi/Lidl do great alternatives
I think they M&S were more annoyed about Aldi's caterpillar cake lol, M&S think only they can do stuff. Nice review
I refuse to buy fake European designer beer on principle - they're not only dishonest & overpriced but are almost always underwhelming.
Got no problem forking out for the knock offs (which ironically _are_ actually imported) every now & then though - they're generally better!! The Lidl version is actually their best standard range lager these days.
Cheers Si!
Edit: well maybe the knock offs _aren't_ imported 🤷🏿♀️
But at least they're not over sold
I think that the word 'dishonest' sums up the situation perfectly.
Well said! I make a point now of not buying any Lager unless it’s brewed in the country of origin
I've noticed a lot of foreign beers brewed in the UK now and they don't taste as good. I always look on the bottle and if its brewed in UK i dont bother.
Not just me that thought the Mapelli was nice. Although it was playing with my head a little because I was shocked by how good it was for the price. The Italian brewed Moretti is head and shoulders better than the UK brewed stuff. And lots more choice as well with many versions available in the super markets over there.
I use to bottle moretti and you wouldn't believe the journey it takes. Italian moretti is so much better like night and day
Great video Simon. This subject of UK brewed continental/Asian beer really grinds me. I was gutted when Singha was no longer imported from Thailand for instance. A head to head with the genuine import against the UK badged up imitation would beva great series to run.
Does anyone here know whether Chang has suffered the same fate as Singha?
I don't know if this is true of all Chang available in the UK but some time back a lot of what was available here was not as strong as the Thai original.
B and M has 330ml cans of Singha imported from Thailand.
Even Leffe Blonde is now made by InBev in the UK...shocking
Chang changed to green bottles and changed the recipe, i enjoyed it out in Thailand when they were brown bottles, not sure what the new one is like
Mapelli is far better than the UK brewed Moretti. My mate brought some Moretti over last night and these days it's utter dirt. It used to have a nice maltiness to it and a bit of body, but now Moretti is flavourless pisswater. Shame.
I fully agree with your view of UK brewed lager.
Hi, what would be your Desert Island bottled, can & draught lagers?
Good stuff Simon. Have to say, I like the Aldi version myself. Given it’s cheaper…. It’s a no brainer really. Lovely ice cold on a warm summers day with the BBQ going. It’s one of my go to beers.
Clocked that you have switched to lagers - great decision.
This is what people drink so this is what matters
Just tried mapelli your right a far better brew, morettie brewed by Heineken gives you a clue why it's so poor
Aldi rosina gran reserva is a bit like peroni gran reserva. Some say its better £2.19 for 660 ml bottle abv 5.9 very nice.Ah I see you've already done that one
When Moretti appeared in the UK a few years ago it was brewed in Italy, wasn't it? I had a feeling they'd end up cheapening and ruining it eventually. Such a shame.
Happens with pretty much all imported beers. The business plan is to introduce UK drinkers to the original foreign beer and once we get a taste for it, switch to a cheaply brewed UK imitation beer and hope nobody notices. Clearly many people don't notice.
@@Coxy-b34 I don't think it's that, if you're selling enough to have it brewed in the local country and save on distribution costs, it makes sense to do so, just like cars.
@@Bertie22222 Its exactly that, beers suffer from a change in recipe and a cheaper method of production and clearly taste inferior to the original.
Cars would be basically the same car and getting people hooked on the original car ala beer doesn't really work in. The scenario.
Bait and switch withing the beer industry is a tactic used extensively in the beer industry, especially withing the last 10 years.
What other reason is there to sell beers in their original form for a matter of months then switch to UK brewed rubbish?
w/d Simon keep the coming
I don't like these comparisons because they aren't properly done. They are prejudiced. I know you want to be honest but with this type of test you make it impossible for yourself.
You're kind of assuming that this guy could do a blind test and know what he's talking about
I think it's widely acknowledged that UK-brewed "European" lager is vastly inferior to the imported equivalent from the country of origin, so there's no need for any blindfolded tests here.
@@mrchico2621 Why would a blindfold be required? This is beer tasting not S&M. The reason you give is exactly why it should be done blind. Simon got it wrong and his prejudice influenced the result. Both beers are brewed in Britain. A word of advice, never drink beer blindfolded. If you're tasting lagers and some are dark then you need to normalise your test; i.e. removing the dark ones and tasting them as a separate category. No blindfolds please, the eyes matter in tastings. Takes a huge ego to assume you can't be fooled by yourself.
@@Doupyourflies You're missing the point. It's about exposing how terrible these heavily marketed "brewed under license" lagers actually are, even compared to the Aldi/Lidl knock-offs. Most people still don't realise.
@@mrchico2621 You can't expose how terrible these beers are because you, Simon and I and most people are prejudiced. We see UK brewed and we assume it's crap because we believe it is. Especially now we've found that since Brexit we're brewing with sewage water. It's called delusion and a lot of us prey victim to delusion, especially narcissists. So to prove we aren't prejudiced and UK brewed beers really are worse we have to taste them without any knowledge of which is which otherwise it's a deluded review.
Well done Simon
Umm embarassingly Google says Birra Mapelli is brewed in the Uk by Heineken 🤷
Uk brewed larger is the pits it really is . Only exception is staropramen and czech mate
I actually tried some of the UK brewed Staropramen last night, it was terrible lol. If that's the exception we're in trouble 😰
@mrchico2621 I don't mind it , much better drink then the usual tripe carling, fosters , Stella, madri , san miguel,
There's obviously no hard feelings between Brewdog and Aldi, as I saw a beer with Aldi style branding brewed by Brewdog in the store the other day.
Slightly off topic, but I enjoy Lidl's "Birra Italiana" Peroni knock-off.
What's "skunkiness", Simon?
You should compare the uk bottle Moretti with a Sub compact version ?
The packaging and labelling is deceptive and you have to look very hard to find the 'Brewed in the UK' print which is usually on the bottom on the case.
Birra Moretti UK is more like a poor rip-off of the Aldi version (based on taste). I did a blind taste test on these 2 beers, and could tell within a second
What is strange is they the Moretti on the blade is so so much better than the bottle I ran out of it on the blade ans pooped to shop and got some bottles I poured the bottle down the sink after 1 mouthful it was awful and the Moretti bufodoro on the blade is brewed in Italy that’s nicer then the normal one
whats the blade ?.
Heineken has ruined Moretti. You can tell the sweet taste is sweeteners added to it rather than a malt sweetness. Stopped drinking it awhile ago.
Simon, looks like you're going to have to go on a brewery fact finding mission to Germany... or France to see how they do it!
Can you do a review a birra bionda by Lidl and compare to the other 2?
I’d be certain the Mapelli is UK brewed. Likely by one of the big brewers…
No it isn't.
@@nigelwatson2750 yes it is
It actually says on their website ‘country of origin UK’
Ah well.
At least it's cheaper 🤨
@@alexrwlno it’s not
Mapelli is brewed in Italy and is really good. UK moretti is bad, bad bad.
you say everything i say,as regards morreti on tap my local club has it and its rubbish
TBH I don’t particularly rate the Italian beers, even the ones brewed in Italy. It was a conversation I had with an Italian colleague when out there recently and he was the one to bring it up! Italians should stick to wine and food!
Same time after time UK rip off versions of continental brands are cheap made for max profits not max taste, accountants rule .
Neither of those glasses are intended for lager. The trainwreck continues to worsen.
Don’t watch if it upsets you so much.
Super! Cheers! 🍻👍
Both made by Heineken according to Google
Lager in stout glasses simon 😢
Isn’t a stout glass and it’s ale glass
have you done a review on the UK brewed beers you do like in bottles/cans head to head
Yep, it's a better beer.
Big issue English brewed lager is as bad a American lager wishy washy dog pee..😂
Birra Mapelli is aparently brewed by Carlsberg Italia in Italy
ingredients are missing
Brewed by Heineken it’s going to be crap
got to say the fake from lidl and aldi are way better
You should have copyright over this beer battle video format Simon, so that second rate Englishmen cannot copy 👍
Same story, Heineken's attitude...
Beer isn't brewed by brewers...Managers and accountants.... this is the reason.
So bitterness, sweetness and then nothingness lol, you don't know what you are talking about 😂
Both made by Heineken according to Google
