    What I really can’t stand is that a significant amount of surveillance happens through ordinary people. You leave your house to get some pasta from M&S and you could be on someone’s tiktok for content.

    I recently got annoyed when my landlord installed a "thermometer" in my apartment. It doesn't have a display, but it does have wifi. Looked this product up online and saw that they had a whole line of these boxes, some even had movement sensors and microphones. Anyway I removed the battery day one.

    • @obscurum6
      @obscurum6 Месяц назад +9

      The landlord to my flat installed one of those. They insisted it go on the Living room wall and not in the hallway. 🤔 Also they installed a new smoke detector that can't be switched off.

      Here's what they could have done to make this thing not feel hostile toward the tenant: Make a customer app. Let me, who lives here, at least be able to see the numbers for myself! This could even be useful for like a heatwave if you have a pet at home and you're at work or something. It could show you a graph over time as compared to outdoors temperature, etc, I can see a use. There is an app for the admin of all these sensors, ie the landlord, I found it on Google Play, but no customer app.

    I love how people accost street photographers, complaining they have no right to take photos in public. They do. It's legal to take photos of anyone in a public place. The irony is that while complaining, those same people don't realise they are on about 100 CCTV cameras in the high street.

    Computer network user monitoring has been around much longer than you may think. Over 20 years ago, when I was at school, I was in the computer room, doing some work. The computers in that room were all on a LAN, which was monitored from a central terminal. I was trying to find a clipart picture in MS Word 2000 to put into the piece of work I was doing. Anyone who remembers MS clipart will remember that it was absolute shit, and had nothing even remotely useful in it. I can't remember what I was looking for, but after failing to find it after a few search attempts, I typed "fuck" into the search bar, out of frustration. That was enough. The following day, the school's IT manager found me, pulled me out of class, and presented me with a full-colour printout of a screenshot showing my heinous crime. I was given a bollocking and had my computer use revoked for a week.

    You've invited in a multi national company to be able to watch and listen to everything you do.
    I've laughed at people at work (pilot) when am obviously very proud new owner of a camera would get a ping on his iPad, he'd say "ooh I wonder who's at my door".
    We were on turnaround in Spain. He could have just been watching his house be robbed from afar 😂

    Years ago I worked in a homeless hostel. Unbeknown to us, one of the residents really thought this was happening. When he left, we found stickers warning the next room occupant of the neighbour's microwave and the evil staff. The stickers were hidden in very odd places. It took some time to find them all. I never did find out if the neighbours had a dangerous, spying microwave...This resident had seemed quite together, however I think the day he moved in his mother tried to warn us. She said she had some concerns! I am just glad he never trird to hurt anyone.

On average each British is monitored 5 times of each Chinese. Yet the British media constantly call China a surveillance country and think they are free. What does this tell?
