Same, my favourite gadget was a 19th century Singer sewing machine with a shuttle bobbin. I loved threading and winding it probably more than actually making all the things I used it for! My Kenwood stand mixer bought secondhand in 1985 is still going strong (I had to take apart, clean and re-oil once in that time but it was easily done). I’ve a basic washing machine donated by a neighbour over 10 years ago who said she’d had it for 15 years at that point. Can’t get the filter cap off because it’s welded on by limescale (very very hard water area) but I treat it to a clean once in a while and it’s still operating. My parents and siblings have fancy schmancy shiny-computer-aided-science-fiction-looking marvels of technology and have between them gone through >5 in the same time.
Quality is the enemy of consumerism and shareholders’ dividends so, as with the original light bulbs, they had to engineer in the crappiness. Every time my spin cycle starts up I feel I’m part of the Revolution…😉😇💪🏼

Its an OKO brand. Has a big clickky dial for the program. It uses about 1 tablespoon of washing powder for a full load and it is FANTASTIC at washing.
Its electro mechanical so it should be endlessly repairable AND I have a spare set of rubber seals and hoses for it.
as you say - quality and profit are diametrically opposed competing interests.
Im not a "Luddite" [although they were lied about - not against technology, against unemployment] I dont object to new technology - I object to plastic crap that breaks after 3 minutes of use or you use it once and it goes in the under sink cupboard never to be used again.

I didn't start at University until I was a mature student: that was about 13 years ago, and from that time to this, all I ever seem to hear in my city (it's described as a university city) are the drawling sounds of what I can only describe as "yaaah, yaaah" voices in the shops. I think fashion these days is a great example of consumerism being intimately tied to self-identity. There's all these different "aesthetics" and it's like playing dress up with different personalities. The person behind the aesthetic is a mere imitator without a solid underlying enduring identity of their own. You're not a geek who spends their time alone working on a project in their room, and as a result dresses a certain way. You dress like them for a week because you want to feel smart that week, indulge yourself in delusions about who you are, and then bounce to whatever new identity you feel like next week. Why choose one identity - one person - when you can "be" them all?

Our economic system is predicated on the requirement for people to buy "stuff". If SOME people stop buying stuff then it's possible that they might be able to prosper. If EVERYONE stops buying stuff then businesses have no need to employ people and then it prevents people from paying for their more important stuff (tenancies, mortgages) in which case people have to apply for tenancies from their government (in which case they are basically forced to buy stuff)...

The problem isn't that companies have persuaded us we need to consume, it's that the act of consumption has come to define modern lifestyles - we do it because we want to feel wealthy. Companies are simply satisfying the desire we have to consume, by giving us opportunities to do it.
Just look at how people approach shopping centres. You aren't going to the Trafford Centre because there's something you need, you're going to browse, you're going because you're in the mood to consume and you want to find something you can convince yourself to buy.
If we want to alleviate this problem, the only way we're going to be able to do it is by redefining "middle class". By creating a form of status symbol for the people who need it that isn't so wasteful, but is still expensive to do and therefore shows off wealth.

I regard it as a huge personal victory to have persuaded my gf against buying an airfryer... the wave of ads and marketing infomercials was almost unbearable - and now the phenomenon is almost over. Jamie Oliver's new airfyer show almost seems quaint now - it was clearly greenlit and filmed about 6 months too late.

It was reduced by £600 and I had wanted it in 2021 before I got my iPad but the marketing so good it lingered my belief it was an object of desire anyway I managed it. Solution every time I went online to see how many left of said expensive product I would go to my online bank account 😂 like a bucket of ice cold water lol metaphorically speaking. So if anyone has similar issue and just must have an that object of desire think again go and get yourself a cup of tea or coffee and calm down

It's more an issue of buying stuff that is going to have a lifespan of more than 1 year. So many items are made cheaply and designed to break after a certain point, or either virtually impossible to fix or cheaper to just replace.
Our grandparents also had less because things used to be built to last. They'd buy a lamp made of iron, and it would last 60 years. We buy a walmart mainstays lamp made of some sort of plastic only pretending to be real plastic and it lasts 3 months.

Brilliant i really like the one egg cooking pan though, if it's cast iron you can use them easely on the bbq to create different tiny meals :) while the slaps of meat are around it. For the rest you are totally right. People should buy more stuf second hand (saves money , lowers your c02 footprint so the industry can raise it) etc.

They did have a TV and radio and a basic washing machine and a separate spin dryer and that was about it!! My grandparents had even less!

Just went to the hardware store to get a faucet spare part and saw a skillet on sale. I needed it as nonstick ones are dangerous they say. Decided to walk around a bit and saw small accessories such as hair trapper for bathroom drains. Told myself I'd be back for it. Walked around and saw kitchen cabinet that I could organize my kitchen with. Walked around more and got tired. Came home with nothing. Tapped my shoulder for not not buying anything.
Now realize the only thing that is relatable is the phone- drop -on -face pad that I really need. ☝🏼

I actually picked up a small one egg sized cast iron frying an at a traction engine rally. Five quid. Some smoothing work with a flap disc on an angle grinder to get rid of the shit sandcast finish and then season it with a lot of heat and some olive oil and it’s the bollox. But I like cast iron, and it’s very cute.
But I take your point Michael.

If you removed colours and flavourings (or scents) from every product in a supermarket, then removed all of the branding and put everything in generic containers, you could suddenly put everything into a corner shop. The thing that continues to surprise me is that there's a whole column of Ibuprofen brands in my local Tesco, yet Ibuprofen is a single drug and the cheapest box is the one to buy. And it's the same story for every other product.

The only difference is that we own technology. They still owned everything else. They just didn't replace it as often. Things, like furniture, household items and clothes were designed to last longer years sgo.
They had solid wooden furniture, nowadays it's all flat packed. They had cast iron pans, nowadays it's non stick aluminium. They had linen, cotton and wool, nowadays polyester has cheapened cotton and acrylic is cheap.
They had cars that lasted a lifetime.
Shoes lasted decades and made from tough leather. Nowadays it's all plastic and nylon.
