Very valuable info. I bought a Little Quick Fire Hydrangea this year, which grows 3-4 feet. Hydrangeas are my favourite shrubs and they keep improving them. I love fall colour and if a plant also has spring or summer flowers it's a bonus. It's great that most of your plants can also be grown in my zone 5 in Canada. Love all your videos!
I forgot to mention the Serviceberry, which is a large shrub which can also be grown as a tree. It has white flowers in spring, followed by berries that the birds eat, then lovely orange colour in the fall.
So I just love your videos it's make me very happy and excited and it's reminds me of memories I'm 15 y.o but I love plants soo much and I hope When I grow up I get a house like your wonderful house
Hi Dhiaa!! I too have loved plants since a young age. They are so beautiful and working out in nature is really so calming and lovely for us. I'm so happy you share this hobby with the rest of us. Welcome to my channel and keep dreaming!! Before you know it you will have a beautiful garden if your own 💚
I have a Oak Leaf Hydrangea (Gatsby Gal). I purchased it late last year and planted it this spring. Looking forward to the leaves changing colors. I'm planning to get 2 more and the three of them will be the center of a small bed.
Hi Mavis! Oak leaf hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful! I hope to add a Gatsby girl at some point. Hope yours change fall colors beautifully leaves 🍃 🍁
I'm so glad I found your your channel. I follow many gardeners but you are the first one I have found in MA. I can relate to the plants and shrubs you use in our zone and climate . Your videos are very well done and your landscaping is beautiful.
Love them all!! I planted a Little lime earlier this year, my Dad just planted me a Limelight and Quickfire tree all Proven winners for my Birthday!! Thanks for talking about the Tiny Nine, I wanted a Ninebark but don't have the space for the big one lol 😆
Hi Michelle! Oh your going to love the limelight. The blooms are so beautiful and it offers interest for so long. You can selectively prune for stem strength. I have a vid on this if your interested. The quickfire is also awesome!! 👌 yes definitely try the tiny wine ninebark. Mine has been great so far and pretty compact, although I know it will continue to grow. I love Dwarf varieties of plants!
Just found this video. I really like your enunciation! ‘82 grad in Landscape Architecture. I will look forward to more. Glad you featured Cotinus coggyria, have always loved that plant.
I have a viburnum that is at 15 ft which produces white blooms followed by berries that turn red in July and mature to dark purple drawing birds. Later, the leaves turn purplish and green before falling. Full size viburnum 'trees' require planning, judicious pruning and patience. Under her is a variegated euonymous I have woven into a latticed patio fence. The paring lend privacy to a backyard facing sliding glass door.
I love all your picks here! My mom has a 7 year old smoke bush, or tree rather, than we have limbed up to expose the trunk. It is stunning- probably pushing 20ft tall but only 5ft wide. Can’t wait for my new construction home to be done so I can plant some of these things!!!!
Hi Alannis! So fun limping up shrubs to make trees. I've done this to an evergreen in my garden. Burning bushes are really popular among my comments and I'm thinking I NEED one now lol. I also started with a new construction home and have been building out landscape over the last 9 years. I have a vid on this if your interested. Shows what we started with. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jasmine!! Thank you so much!! My gardens are finally starting to grow into their own after 9 years and it's so rewarding to watch. All the wile always planning and scheming new areas 😛🤣 thanks for watching! 💚
Thanks, I love your list they are also my favorites! I have all that you mentioned, except for the Nine Bark, and it's one that I've wanted to get for a while. I love bringing Hydrangeas into the house I have quite a few different ones.
Oh this is great stuff! I have a Quick Fire Tree new to my garden planted last year and it looks amazing! I also planted the shrub version this year and it’s surviving so far! Your little limes look awesome. Added them in this year so looking forward to next years growth. All your other suggestions are my wishlist so this was awesome for me to see them in your gorgeous gardens, and I so greatly appreciate all your info and tips for each one. Loving your education and all you share. Thank you!
Hi Victoria! Thank you so much for your support, and kind words. I'm glad my videos are helpful 🥰 you will love the quickfire standard. It's really a beautiful hydrangea.
I love all of these! ❤ Some of my favorites! I'm really starting to love viburnums. I planted 4 Korean Spice Viburnums from PW this year (3 Spice Baby, & 1 Spice Girl to pollinate). So far I really love their matte blueish-colored leaves. They are expected to have great fall color, berries if pollinated, & highly scented spring blooms. Best part is that we have a lot of deer pressure and they haven't touched them (so far)🦌. I also deal with juglone & they are supposed to be tolerant of that also.
Your plants look so good! Limelights were bred in western Michigan. I used to live there, and the temps cool down in the evening. Not so much in southeastern NC where I live now. My Limelights go straight to brown. The first year I thought I did something wrong. Then I learned what a role temperature plays in the hydrangeas’ color. I’ll have to use another shrub to have pretty fall color.
Hi Jennifer! I didn't know they were bred in Michigan! Maybe it was you who mentioned that in some areas they don't turn punk of the night time temps aren't cool enough? I know ot was a comment I had received. I found that fascinating! It's less exciting when they go straight from creamy to brown. That happens to my wee white hydrangeas. As for limelights, look into the limelight prime. Supposedly earlier blooming, more blooms, stronger stems, and pinker! Sounds like all the kinks have been worked out by the sounds of it. I hope to try one in my garden at some point because I really do love limelights.
@@HookedandRooted I also have the same issue. I live in SW Ohio and my Bobo's go from beautiful white to ugly brown......ugh! I like the height and width of them but wanted a transition to pink as well. The sun has been so strong and it is never ending watering.
Great job. My fav fall colour is the burning bush, nothing compares to its red. (As long as it gets full sun) Pretty boring answer though! I want to get a fothergilla next and plant it in front of my huge burning bush for orange against the red. Tiger eyes sumac is another orange beauty but I just planted a few in the spring so I haven’t seen their fall colour yet.
Hi Erin! Oh yes that's another super vibrant Fall shrub, the burning bush!! Fothergilla are so cool!! Hope to find one at some point! There's a blue one that's so pretty!! Thanks for watching! 🌱
@@HookedandRooted I believe the burning bush is invasive and selling / purchasing it is illegal in MA. I garden in MA and had looked into it for my garden.
Thanks again for another beautiful and informative video! I planted black lace elderberry a few weeks ago and it is green. I hoping as it matures the leaves will get their dark coloring. 😊💖🦋🐝🌸🌻🙌👋👍
Hi Beatrice! Your most welcome, thanks for watching 🌱 I also have a black lace elderberry. It's a beautiful shrub, but mine has struggled. One year it had black aphids. This year it got elderberry boarer, and I had to cut it all the way back. Luckily it started growing back!! As for the color, mine also starts off a bit of a muddy green then it darkens up. However, its possible that hot temperatures also make it green, i found that to be the case when researching the foliage going green on my smokebush. The lacy foliage is gorgeous! Reminds me of Japanese Maples lace leaves.
The heat seems to have cooked my Little Limes and the blooms all look sort of brownish green. I leave them on because I prefer the blooms to empty stalks through the winter.
Hi Maureen! My little limes look great, however my wee white hydrangeas and my Bobo's did terribly this year. They roasted in the heat, and lack of rain. I left my limelight stalks up last winter. I enjoyed seeing the dried bloom heads.
Hi, Steph! Can u tell me what the zone is on the Viburnum? I’m in west Tx, zone 8a(desert heat so think like AZ heat), and hydrangeas just won’t grow well here. Our sun is so hot that it just scorches the life out of them. Since the viburnum looks sort of like a hydrangea and I have the WORST hydrangea envy (😂😂😂), I was wondering if the viburnum might work here. Ty in advance for ur answer! 🥰
Hi Lori! The Japanese snowball bush viburnum is hardy in zones 5-8. So with regular water, it could probably do well in your zone. Maybe in a bit of a shaded location? Our sun was also so hot this year in zone 6, and no rain (in a drought). I got a taste of Texas/Florida climate lol. I can only imagine it different and somewhat difficult to keep things hydrated in your climate. Thanks for watching! 🌱
I have a smoke tree that has done a nice job at hiding a power pole in back corner of my property. It is 30 ft tall. The pink plumes are huge but are high up on the tree. Pink Jane Magnolias are on either side. I have wondered about the nine barks here in my area 7a. M
Hi Jo! Thank you so much! Good to hear about the tidbit. I've actually been curious about those. It's possible the ninebark would do fine for you if you keep it in a protected spot
I've waited a long time for a ginger wine nine bark. I was happy to finally get 3 Denim and Lace Sage this year ! Does that say anything ... This year there seemed to be a few varieties out there from P.W. but , none that I had even heard of . Have you heard of the P.W. pigmy butterfly bush ? Me either 🤔 They did have a couple you mentioned . I chose a hot pink wiegela bush . It's varied foliage throughout the season and winter branches really caught my eye . Then I also seen some in full hot hot pink bloom too with the dark green foliage ! It's beautiful . Thank you for sharing . Your gardens and your ideas ate delightful and inspiring 🌟
Hi Philis! Isn't it so fun when we finally get some of our wish list plants? I had that happen this year with a couple things I've been wanting, a tri colored beech, and some godzilla fern!
Hi Andrew! I agree, I definitely NEED a prime! I just love limelights so I can't wait to get my hands on some. My Bobo's and my wee whites performed poorly this year with the heat and lack of regular rain. They suffered and burned up. Looked like roasted cauliflower! Thanks for watching 🌱
