    Great selection. I live in Toronto, Canada and one of my favourite fall shrub, is the Burning Bush. Throughout the summer it doesn’t really shine, but in the fall is when it puts on a show. It turns blood red, which just lights up your garden/landscape. It’s very popular up here in Canada. I have two in my backyard garden and one in my front garden, and it’s always my favourite thing to look forward to in the fall garden.

    • @ritasicari7518

      Burning Bush is so beautiful in the fall-especially en masse, but I think they are considered invasive in some areas.

    • @originalchoochoo

      I love them too!
      They are considered invasive in alot of the US.
      Although, I put two of them right in front of my condo in Virginia Beach and never had a problem with them spreading.

      There's a native Euonymus in Georgia commonly called Hearts a Bursting. It's seed pods open with bright red seeds & often, the foliage turns white. A much less "in your face" look but beautiful nonetheless. Maybe Proven Winners could work on a sterile Euonymus that gave great color but didn't seed all over. Mostly birds spread the seeds so, like the horrid Privet, you may not see where it's spreading to.

    • @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655
      @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655 4 года назад +1

      Rita Sicari I had know idea that it’s invasive. Never had that issue in my garden. I was wondering if there might be different varieties.

    • @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655
      @derrongoodengardenandlifes8655 4 года назад +1

      Original Alicat I think we might have a different variety up here in Canada, because the ones I have in my gardens are not invasive at all.

    I bought a Temple of Bloom in the quart size last spring and liked to joke about my new tree, as it was only about six inches tall. At the end of this, it's second, season it now over 4 feet and growing nicely into a tree shape. Deer did "sample" it this year which set it back a little, but it still has a few buds that are starting to open. Love this plant, happy to see it get some attention!

    Great timing on the video...just planted up 12 arborvitaes, got 1 golden arborvitae for fall interest, the tips are golden yellow like the color of the Buckhorn you showed..going to try and find that one to plant in that corner of my yard. I also purchased 2 photinias red tips AKA: Red Robin’s to use as a privacy screen...they also have beautiful glossy green leave and get bright red in the fall...I’m zone 9 The Great Pacific NW. can hardly wait to go to the nursery tomorrow and find some of these plants because they will intermixe beautifully with what I already have going. Also got a couple flowers that I would like to throw out there...Proven Winners Firelight Hydrangea it has huge cone shaped panicles that are bright white, starting to turn flush pink and then it goes to a scarlet red. This baby was $114. And worth every cent!!! The other plants I got from my grandmas garden and it’s called StoneCrop sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ and I planted those along my cedar fence at my old house....dug them back up and planted them in an old Radio Flyer red wagon to plant at my new house....well they’ve looked so good in that wagon, I decided to divide those and put them in other areas of the yard...the flowers are extremely long lasting and they go from light green to dusty pink to a rich burgundy color. I love your channel ...my parents live close to you, so when I visit them, we always stop in at your parent’s nursery. A true delight.

    Great video!
    I'm in Central Iowa and have a group of 3 Fineline Buckthorns that have been established for about 3 years now. This past summer was the first summer that I noticed all three were COVERED in rust spores/patches. I reached out to another person in town that had them and their's were covered, as well. I was able to treat them and all pulled through perfectly. About a month later I noticed all 3 were COVERED in mating Japanese Beetles..I was able to treat all 3 and they all survived. 2 weeks later all 3 were covered again with determined mating Japanese Beetles. Immediate treatment worked once again.
    So, long story short - very resilient plant but keep an eye on them!

    I literally gasped when I saw the dogwoods and my husband wanted to know what I was looking at! This was stunning and fascinating!!
    A couple of questions - will you be planting these in your garden this year?
    Also, how does fall colour work? Does it turn colour if you are in that zone? For example you mentioned one plant was zone 5-9; does that mean zone 4 or zone 10 may not see the colour? Or just that it may not survive at all in those climates? (Hope this question makes sense!)
    Thank you for all you share!

    • @Edu_Kate
      @Edu_Kate 4 года назад +1

      If your zone isn't listed then it won't grow in your area. Garden centers don't carry plants not conducive for your zone.
      I'm in 4b so most of these won't be for me.

    • @emmalavenham
      @emmalavenham 4 года назад

      @@Edu_Kate I highly recommend royal azaleas! They like the cold weather, and their foliage is amazing - three seasons out of the year... And, for a good solid evergreen, there are the Finnish rhodies! BTW I am pretty sure that a cultivar of fothergilla was developed in conjunction with the Chicago Botanical Garden which is cold tolerant - zone 4...

      Thanks. I have a rhododendron that is very confused. I think it sunk too low. I've had azaleas before but they didn't last. I thought what she called "bottle brush" looked like Fothergilla.
      I'll look into that. I'm sure I considered it, just haven't seen it in garden centers.

    • @emmalavenham
      @emmalavenham 4 года назад

      @@Edu_Kate Did you try "Northern Lights" azaleas? They were bred by scientists at the University of Minnesota - to withstand MN winters - like -30 to -35! There are a lot of colors to choose from. There are also rhododendrons introduced by the University of Helsinki - like Pojhola's daughter - to withstand winters in Finland. The key is to plant these plants in the spring, so they have time to root in before the snow comes (and because Im overprotective, "root and grow" and mulch)... BTW The FG is called Windy City... I have never seen one but it is reported to be very cold hardy.

    I have a Japanese Sand Cherry shrub in my front yard which is amazing all year round. In the spring the leaves come in burgundy red and then it gets the prettiest little pink blooms which turn into berries that the birds love. Then in the summer the leaves turn a bronze green. In the fall they turn back to burgundy red to bright red before they fall off for the winter. They are susceptible to Japanese beetles though but thankfully I don’t deal with those in my area.

    Love my spice viburnums...the scent is amazing! I've been considering adding the Temple of Bloom for a few years, glad Proven Winners is offering it! I really want it to be the tree form. How do you prune it to attain the tree form? And ohhhh, that photo of the intermingled red and yellow twigged dogwood looks like a painting!

    These are all so beautiful, Im very curious, living in a zone 9 with plants that are rated zone 7 or 8 is that an indication that our summers may be too hot for that particular plant?

      Tandi Crowder Zones are rated for winter hardiness. It often means our winters are not cold enough (eg some blueberries need so many hours of coldness to produce fruit). Microclimates in your yard may make it cool enough for a zone 8 plant to do fine in our zone 9 garden. Our lower backyard faces north and is surrounded by woods/green belt and only gets sun from mid April to early Sept. so the winter temp there is 5-10’ cooler than our upstairs south facing yard.

      Tandi Crowder I’m considering a move to Las Vegas from Oregon. I’m west of the mountains from Laura in zone 8b. Being closer to ocean makes us warmer. I’m thinking you are right. Summers too hot in Las Vegas for those zones. But... Laura gets hydrangeas to grow with lots of water. Something desert doesn’t have!😆

      @@portlandval55 Im thinking that heat would be the issue, it seems the most obvious but then again there in eastern Oregon they have just as high heat as we do here so Im just not 100% so it would be great to hear her thoughts..

    Hi Laura, I'm new to gardening and currently planning a new garden. Can you suggest some really small anchor trees that would work next to a foundation? Something that has a really small root ball. Also, I'm hoping to plant something that I can use to hide our yard from the neighbors. The Fern Leaf Buckhorn sound perfect. Can you suggest any others? Thank you for all of the wonderful videos. I've learned so much.

    The buckthorn would be perfect for my sons condo backyard, it’s about 20x30. He needs some privacy and fall color is great! Do they need to be pruned? The lower the maintenance for him the better 😁

    Such gorgeous plants! You mentioned pruning the dogwood. Would you do that in fall or spring?

    Laura these are the most beautiful fall shrubs! Do you always have to have a second viburnum for pollination or just certain ones? Also if you do, how close do you need to plant to get proper pollination? Thank you!

    Fine line Buckthorn, how tolerant are they to wind? Some of my plants get wind burned and I’m trying to find a solution to some sort of windbreak which is natural instead of having a fence.
    Love all the plants and your kitties 🐱 under the conifers x

    Spice Girl Viburnum! There is no Denying it is a beautiful tree! Or does it really Wannabe a shrub? Either way it is Something Kinda Funny about it. It isn't Too Much and it isn't too little! I'm never Wasting My Time with any other Viburnum, they can all Move Over! It is such a Treasure and it really does Spice Up Your Life. It is never going to Stop. Even in winter when it is Naked and the leaves have said Goodbye they still Feed Your Love ❤️ (I'm sorry 😂)

    For the buckthorn, can you use those as a kind of wind break? We get intense wind storms like you guys and I'm trying to find creative/pretty ways to protect my raised garden beds...
