Ace review thanks ever so much for your time taken doing this , the photo images of that tiny humming bird was amazing btw ! Just ordered this for my wife as she loves the close up stuff .
I'm impressed by the sharpness of the Neewer, its focus range is much narrower but when the subject is right it really works. However while it's fine for stationary setups like this, it’s clearly nowhere near as practical as the GoPro version for shooting out and about.
@@ttl_channel THe GoPro website says it's waterproof when installed but also lists a disclaimer saying "1Macro Lens Mod is not intended for use under water." My understanding is that it's waterproof but the video won't be sharp.
Thank you for all your testing and for sharing the results. At the far end of distance range of the MACRO Lens Mod, the focus beyond 750mm is not as sharp than the base camera. As you noted, the near focus distance remains closer than that of the base camera, and that comes at the cost of far focus. However, this loss is quite small and you may find it acceptable, depending on your use case. Regarding the 3rd party close up filters, as you said the performance towards the edges of the image is very poor. There's only so much they can do with a single lens element. For use cases where the subject of interest is only at the center this may not matter, but for other uses it's a significant limitation. However, perhaps the biggest drawback of these filters is they don't play well with HyperSmooth stabilization, which you did not test. The Macro Lens Mod is designed to maintain the excellent HyperSmooth stabilization performance that users expect. One final difference is the Macro Lens Mod is waterproof (once it's mounted to the camera). That's not the case for the 3rd party filters which may leak water in to the space between the filter and the camera lens. While that won't damage the camera (which is waterproof without the lens cover glass), it could leave you with a difficult clean up. Full disclosure: I work for GoPro.
Very helpful video and good comparison. Thanks for your time spend to prepare this video.
thanks for this perfect comparison

Agreed. Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Can you just keep the macro lens on all the time and still use it in wide view with the same quality as the standard lens?
Great video, thanks for making this. As I understand it neither of these are for use underwater?
A GoPro employee commented on this video that the GP lens is actually waterproof. Not sure how it would perform, but apparently possible.
