good video, think its about high time, car manufacturers stopped using gloss black plastic everywhere, same carry-on with the interiors, they have it all the frequent touch areas, all scratched to hell after a few months of ownership/use!!
Jon, I've looked but not been able to find, can you point me to any vids you've done where you deal with piano black interior panels please? I'd like to learn how to clean and protect mine and maybe remove small scratches. Thanks!
thanks fab. they sux though dont they.. even the go faster bits I have stuck on my car are gloss plastic and swirl up if you touch.. I actually think its almost poinltess polishing this stuff with its small trim.. because of how quickly it mashes up again.. polish and PPF does make a lot of sense.
Amazon do a great selection of PPF and a variation of different thicknesses to suit your application Jon. Used it on my car and great first class results.
Wish I'd seen this before I tackled one side of the A pillars on the A45 Jon. My first time dealing with these piano black plastics and I struggled big time. Got the heavy marks out but went to aggressive and struggled to refine it. Once I got it to a point it was looking good, even on a soft pad with britemax black max I still had slight hazing. Watching this I now know my speed was way to high, I was at 3-4 on the shinemate mini rotary and probs too much pressure as well! Will need to try tackling these again, thanks Jon!
A Rupes white polishing and Menzerna Final Finish 3000. The combo that works effortlessly and produces a great result for me. The trick is light pressure.
I used lens cleaner on internal with a very soft lens cleaning. I used a small amount of old fashioned windowlean and a another lens cleaning cloth on the exterior again a soft lens cleaner with mixed results
That's what he's talking about at the end of the video. PPF is paint protection film. Pretty similar to the stuff places use for the clear bra treatments now too.
If you could put a kit together for removing light swirling and scratches, what would you choose cutting wise and finishing wise? I'm getting confused looking up everything. Cheers
My car has plain black plastic pillars in matte that match the rest of the trim. They may not look quite as nice, but damn if the upkeep isn't easier. A little trim black here and there and they look just fine. I don't even mind not having the gloss.
Another great video. Any tips on how to clean the so called Crome trim around the doors? I’ve tried various different things but nothing seems to work. They still look like there loads of residue on them.
if its bare chrome them a metal polish.. If its clearcoat then any sort of abrasive product and a buff with a microfiber can clean them up.. sometimes though that can get heailvy etched to the point of being ruined.. its hard to say bryan
I watched another video doing these and they said they are clear coated, apex detail and on detailing world people say the same that they are clear coated
@@ForensicDetailing cheers for the reply mate! I've came across your channel and you've helped loads. I've bought about 4 things after watching your videos! I've spent all my evening watching your videos. I've just got a brand new car and looking for an alloy cleaner now. Thanks for your help mate
@@ForensicDetailing Hi Jon, absolutely love your channel. Please - Can you use a machine polisher on the cars’ painted plastic front bumpers, side skirts etc, or are they only really safe to use on the metal panels? Keep up the good work. Christian.
Hello sir. Do you have an idea how many times can you actually polish those? Had mine polished 4 times already in a 2 year old car. Recently had it serviced at the dealer and they scratched the hell out of them again. Wanted to know how often and how many times can u repeat this. Had it done with Koch Microcut
@@ForensicDetailing i have found on the back of the trim that mine are made of PMMA, ABS+GF8. Does this mean mine are covered with black pleksi glass and not clearcoated?
Also found it hard to get good PPF, seems like you have to be accredited to get Expel and the like. Covered my pillars in satin black vinyl, easy to get and to apply. Got fed up with polishing them every month.
Hi Jon, any advice on how to use a pad on a drill to polish these pillars? I used Poor Boys 2.5 and it did a decent job but struggled to remove the hazing. It's looking OK now that it's covered with Fusso Coat and the brilliant Bouncer's Done and Dusted Si Edition.
ive show a very informal video on this. wasnt sure if it was worth dropping.. Ill drop it, possibly on "Forensic unplugged". maybe on main channel. H8 is epic perhaps my favorite compound. H9 ive used now in anger in fact ive nearly done my little 250 ml bottle. its good but question is does the price increase justify it? stay tuned.
Find a local company that apply the paint protection film; they’ll probably sell you a 12” strip across the width of the roll for pocket money. If you feel the need, tell them it’s to protect something other than a car so they don’t feel like they’re being done out of some work in the application.
too agressive mate you will leave behind fine swirls every time I promise you. you have to finsh out with mega soft pads (new or very very clean) and finsihing polishes on very slow speeds with virtually no pressure.. then you can get like a really good finish. trick it to just be patient and just do when I did in the video (tape up a bit better than I did).
@@ForensicDetailing had a go earlier, couldn't get rid of fine swirls then I've taken to your channel, should have done it the other way around! Assume I'll be OK using s20 to begin with for the heavy cut then follow with the finishing polish. New pads it is then too!
nope :( the first thing is. if they are swirled up you have to remove a lot of material.. removing that material, means lots of working and more marring. In my opinion the key things to getting cool finish.. get the swirling sorted first with cutting compound.. then use clean ultra soft finishing pad.. with tiny amounts of 3800.. use your machine at very low speeds with the smallest amount of pressure.. and just slowly polish over the surface to remove that compounding haze.. thats the key. and if you dont do that, in the right light up close there will be machine induced marring from the final polish. thats why there is no other videos out there filming the results fairly by actually getting right up close in heavy light.
JON YOU READ MY MIND ! These pillars on my range rover Evoque are a nightmare. I will soon polish them by hand with Griots applicator and 3D HD Speed which has fillers. Have no machine yet. Order's on the way... Nowadays cars have this s... everywhere now even inside ! 😣 ... really cheap I think...
Thanks mate never seen a video on this before, my B pillars are awful they need doing desperately. Does anyone know of any good polishers for an affordable price? I’ll only be using it on my car so I don’t want to be spending £100’s looking to spend about £80 max. Thanks.
little das6 pro. would be the thing that can do it all. and you could put a 75ml plate on it and use 80ml pads. or a 90ml plate as well perhaps for the hex mini pads. then the 5inch plate for the normal polishing... good option... if you want a cheap mini rotary like I use here theres some shinemate EP803 or 805 cant rememeber the nunber
@@danielmeglio3870 Yes, I've done it many times. Just be careful of the shroud on the machine touching any areas of the vehicle as you're polishing, as it's a lot larger than the 2" plate/pad
This drives us all nuts as you walk up to the car. I use a manually applied P1. Does the trick in a few minutes for me. Not as good finish as yours mind.
Always a pain in the ass, i had premium MF re-scratch whilst buffing off the compound, when i got them spotless i coated with C4 hoping that'd protect them, but as you say, too soft for ceramics!

Bro, I love your content. I owe you a debt of gratitude for helping me keep my stable sparkling.
Had protective film put on mine. It’s a decent option but not perfect. Now I need a solution to similar fine scratching on the chrome window trims.
Great minds think alike Jon. Exactly how I did mine, as you you say its important to use a finishing pad...excellent demo..

I was happy when you said: to avoid scratches, do not touch! LOL !!
wounder if lime prime would be good for refining it after compounding
Great video! I just did my very first polishing today and realized I need something smaller for these areas because holy crap there's a lot of swirls!

I use a LHR75e with white pad/polish and no pressure to get the results I’m after. I struggled with my rotary to get zero marring.
Great video. Just wondering how often you would do this? And how often is it safe to do this?
Recently did mine on my Passat with a rotary polisher with 3M fine cut and used Jayswax ceramic wax after, looks brandnew again with no swirls.

This is an important detail. My detailer polished them and then protected with a clear film that doesn’t get scratched as easily.

Yeah I know I watched the video. Not sure if my detailer used PPF but he did two cars with the same method and both have very clean pillars still.
Works well on abused binnacle acrylic too, nothing worse than scratches every time you glance at speedo.

Is that a 350 GSM buffing towel or would 500 be better for maintaining piano black surfaces?
in theory an open pile towel might be the best mate. so yer one of those 500 gsm fluffy ones

Fantastic video mate.... from Australia 😃👍🇦🇺
How about putting clear wrap after its corrected.
Great video, thank you!
Can you use the exact same technique for gloss black in interiors?
yes although polishing inside of cars suxs and you prolly need mini tool options. your better off busting out the trim sometimes and doing it outside.
Exactly my question
Can we polish this with hand instead of machine as it is soft area?
Not really

Great video as usual. Can you recommend a interior scratch remover for piano black trim?
all the products I used here rich.
Is this possible just using a polishing pad by hand? Probably won't reply as an older video though.
its possible to correct and gloss up these buy hand but it takes forrever you need to invest in a machine polisher really lewis.
