  • As the 2011 Orion VII Next Generation buses begin to exit Nassau County's bus system, it is worth remembering one bus that never got a chance to be a part of NICE Bus and only saw a minimal amount of time in service. Bus 1804 had only been in use for less than a year with Long Island Bus, when one Sunday night in July 2011 while deadheading with no passengers on board, it was t-boned by a drunk driver in a van and sent directly into the side of a McDonalds in Uniondale. The bus driver sustained minor injuries however 1804 was totaled and never saw in-service use again. Just one and a half years later in January 2013, after being used for spare parts, it was scrapped and sold at auction for just 1,025 US dollars, a far lower cost than the almost half-million dollar cost of getting a new bus on the road.

Why wasn’t 1804 repaired after the accident?

Because it was too heavily damaged and way too expensive to repair. #1808 almost met the same fate as well, but that unit was deemed repairable, so it was rebuilt. Both buses were replaced with 2012-13 Orion 7.501 EPA10 3G CNGs #1883, and #1884. The 2012-13 batch was only orginially suppose to have 43 buses, but because of these accidents, NICE ended up getting 45 units instead, which hey, I wasn't complaining at the time.

    We're numbed to road death.
This isn't normal. Other developed nations offer safer transport methods than personal cars.
This doesn't have to be normal.

Milwaukee County Transit System had a couple of short lived buses.
#3624 a Neoplan AN440 built in 1987. Only lasted over a year in a half. Retired early due to a fire. The front end was totally burned and destroyed by a faulty defroster. Disposed in 2001.
#6015 a Gillig BRT built in 2020. Ran for a little over 2 years. Retired early after crashing into a building. Caused by a careless and reckless driver. A hit and run accident. Driver never found. Stripped for parts afterwards and disposed in 2023.
The latest accident occurred recently. #1010, a Nova Electric bus totaled by a careless and reckless driver. To make matters worse, operating without a license. This bus will likely be retired and will likely go down as the shortest lived bus ever with only 7 months of service life.
This reckless driving behavior is very unacceptable.
    Have a nice day/night.
