I have been trying to find someone to sharpen my hedge trimmers. I'm 74 yrs old and a widow. I followed your instructions and finally sharp! I almost bought a new trimmer. Thank you 😊
I've been sharpening gas hedge trimmers for 18 years and I've always used a metabo grinder with a 4-in flapper wheel that way at sharpenser blades nice and smooth with no rough edges I only have to use a Dremel for the back blades that I can't get the grinder too try using a flapper wheel much smoother and much faster
Yeah that makes sense for sure. I've tried the 4 in wheel but for me, it leaves to much room for error. I will use it on mower blades however. The Dremel just gave me a way to not mess anything up so easily if that makes sense!
@@CleanCutLawnsNC yeah that definitely does make sense yeah I use the flapper wheels also for lawn mower blades I tried the grinding wheels but I just made too much of a rough edge I just got a load of 35 hedge trimmers in yesterday so I'm going to be doing half of them today and the other half in about 2 weeks
@@CleanCutLawnsNC Yes, and admittedly, it was slow going until I got the hang of it. But, the place I normally have them sharpened has raised their price to almost $70, so it was worth the time spent learning.
Just did it myself. Used an electric drill as I don't have a dremmel and worked fine. Gave it a test and blades running much better than before. Thanks Will def do it in future
Thank you! I thought I would need to disassemble the blades. I've never serviced the blades on my 42 year old Craftsman Trimmer and it is finally bogging down. I'm to old school to run out and buy new first , especially after having to replace Chinese lawnmower blades every season knowing US Steel's blades lasted over 35 years.
I use my hedgecutters almost every day but generally find I only need to sharpen them once a year, not that I'm lazy but Stihl and Husqvarna make quality blades & they have excellent longevity so I will have a day where I get a few beers, sit in the shed/workshop, remove the blades and sharpen them by hand with a file! I weirdly enjoy it but it's whatever works for you!
@@CleanCutLawnsNC Hi mate great thanks did it on my electric B&D cutters with 1983 on the label. Definitely gave it a new lease of life. I got carried away full trim of the garden haha. Thanks again Jack UK
I looked up a few videos about hedge trimmer sharpening because I've just recently aquired a used one and damn does it need sharpening! Why would you not remove the blade and sharpen it in a vise to prevent damaging the bottom mating surface the blade slides on? And why would you not flip the main bar over and sharpen the back side which seems to have the same slope? It would appear that what you're doing is like sharpening a pair of scissors, but only sharpening one blade instead of both, but I see that you can definitely use a Dremmal Tool and that's worth something.
to answer your question on "why would you not just remove the blades and sharpen them?". The reason why is because removing blades on a gas powered hedge trimmer takes a lot of time and the blades are directly connected to the gear box and sometimes the gears can and will literally fall out and you will most likely be chasing loose hedge trimmer parts all over your garage or at best you will create a nice "puzzle" for you to put back together. It is much much easier to just sharpen the blades without removing the blades, trust me..
To be honest the video is just a typical diy'ers idea of how to try and sharpen the blades. It actually is only half a job and not even a good one at that...
@@GSXRAlstareK3 You are a fool. You just repeat this process on each tooth, front and back side... Of course he did it, would you rather have watched a 15 minute video of each individual tooth being sharpened?
