- Need to shoot some awesome looking B-roll? Don't have the cash to spend on lights? Follow me as I give you a tour of my hotel room in China and find the coolest spots to shoot b-roll only using lights from my room.

Love the resourcefulness you show in this video - apart from the action thriller soundtrack - and the results as well. Especially loved the light turning on to highlight the "1.4" on the lens.
That's a really nice hotel room, and 50 bucks is cheap these days. I lived in China and traveled extensively in 1988, and the most I ever spent for a hotel was 20 Rmb. Times have changed!
Fun fact: Ningbo 寧波 is Chiang Kai-shek's hometown.
This was definitely not the cheapest hotel I could find but it happened to be on the same block as my friends house so it worked out well! Ningbo is pretty cool! Have you been before?

Took a shot every time you said the word "cool". I was found dead by paramedics with this video paused at the 4:23 mark. Thankfully through the quick response and professionalism of the San Diego Emergency Medical Services, I was able to be resuscitated and rushed to a nearby hospital. Big shout out to San Diego EMS, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the amazing and hard working men and women out there literally saving lives night after night. Love you all. God bless.
brooo we laughed our ass off xD at minute 3 me and my friend noticed how often he said cool and restarted to count how often he said it and it was about 23 or 24 times by minute 4 haha, I started looking at the comments if someone notice it too and your text made our day hahaha

Hey! loved the creative outlook on using whatever you have to light your b roll. Aside from lighting do you recommend any great on camera mics? Maybe the Rode Shotgun Mic?

For the sci-fi set I shoot F-log, but for everything else on all of my videos I shoot with the Eterna profile on the XT3 which is the flattest profile besides F-log.

Thanks!! The grade is on of my own design and I'm planning on releasing some LUTs at some point. That Fuji XT3 is so good when it comes to color that I hardly have to grade it half the time.

Amazing tips and tutorial! Hope you're feeling better!!! How did you get the slow horizontal pans across the city at the beginning, and the top down?... They seem to go further than the tripod will allow you to tip? Or really zoomed in? I could have sworn they were drone shots!!!! Amazing quality once again!
Thanks! Whoops! Probably should have clarified that one... The shots of the lens inside the hotel room are all with the tripod/slider. The exterior establishing shots at the beginning and end are with my Mavic Air!

Hey man, first off, great video overall, your B-roll is awesome! Now, a bit of critique:
1. The tour of the hotel was a little too lengthy because the majority of the comments about each new light source were 'It's pretty cool, might use it'.
2. You might wanna reconsider using the auto-focus for your interview shots because the focus keeps breathing and it's very noticeable on the light lines against the dark background. Or at least change the setting to a slower mode.
3. Would be cool if you showed more of how you get these crazy macro shots - I found you mention extension tubes in the comments, but would be great to see more details about this.

Thanks for the input! This style of video was definitely a bit of an experiment. I'm considering switching to the newer 35mm from fuji as the AF motor is a newer smoother motor, but for now I'm gonna stick with the 1.4.
I'm definitely planning on doing another B-Roll tutorial that shows my normal shooting setup!

The close-up shots for this video were shot the the Helios 44-2 with a macro extension tube!

I am also jaded when it comes to the "youtuber" look, and I feel like my stuff still has a bit of that in it now, but I need to play the game a little bit to grow my channel, but it will only keep getting weirder and more experimental as time goes on. I have some cool plans for the future :)

Can someone explain why hotels in Asia have windows or openings from the shower/tub into the main room? I experience this in both Hong Kong and the Philippines.
It’s kinda random. Wasn’t sure if it was some sexual thing, watching your partner shower, or if it was to watch TV from the tub. You never see this in North American hotels or from the few hotels I stayed at in Europe.
Hahahah. I'm not really sure but many of them do have this weird window from the bed to the shower hahah. Your guess is as good as mine.
In Lisbon, I stayed in a hotel with this too. I thought it was strange, but interesting too lol!

Sorry....but you’re in a hotel...with great b-roll lighting. Absolutely appreciate the video but this is not a 0-budget b-roll video. You got a nice place & lighting. Not everyone can check out highrises either & sliding tripod thing. Have a good day though. Better to name “B-Roll Hotel day” or something but this is very misleading
Lucked out with a cool looking $50/night hotel room. The look of the room hardly matters however. If you are shooting product shots the background is going to be blurred anyway, so it really comes down to how you place your lights and the quality of light they emit. If I told you what my sci-fi set was made of you would laugh at how low budget it is. Its frankly embarrasing hahah. Cheers and thanks for taking the time to comment.
