Fractal already has the “standalone”rig products covered…The VP4 isn’t for the player wanting an all in one rig,but for the guy that wants to integrate this into their rig,and doesn’t want to have 2 Eventide H90’s on a board,it’s great…between scenes and channels,it’s way more powerful than an H9…the VP4 isn’t for me either, but I can see where it would be a great rig for a small and powerful FX only pedal..there is definitely a market for this…
I have an FM9 in my studio at home, but live, I'm still an amp guy. I'm 63 and have been playing for 54 years, 45 of those professionally as a stage and studio guitarist. The VP4 is a bullseye for me bc I had a Bob Bradshaw rig in the 80s and that programmability and post-amp effects spoiled me. I'll be able to replace effectively 70% of my pedalboard with the VP4 bc it will do what I'm currently using a Boss ES-8 switcher to do with stomp boxes. Love your channel! You really helped me get my seal legs in the Fractal world when I got my FM9.
@@pb25193 It's not that you can't. Of course you can. But I choose not to bc for live gigs I love the sound of my amp. The VP 4 gives me the effects and programmability of the FM9 but I don't need the amp models live. I use it extensively for recording though. It's amazing.
Great vid, but you nailed it- it’s a product not for a guy like you who is “all modeler” That however does NOT make it a flop. It’s a different tool for a different need. Lots of players (pros and amateurs) love fractal effects, want them, but want to use their big amps on stage. This is the effect solution for guys that still like to push air on stage. The footprint is great. It’s a W for us “other” guys :)
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, definitely not my cup-o-tea, but certainly has features for other players with different set up. I would have still liked to see an amp control jack for amp channel switching. Comment section on this video really exploded- interesting to see the multiple points of view.
Fractal doesn't miss. Anyone with an amp who wants top shelf effects can finally get in on the reverbs and delays, the outstanding drives and compressors from FAS. Personally, I love their effects but their amp modeling algorithms are even more legendary. - second to none.
Since you have firmly embraced amp modelling, this product, as you say, is not for you. However, for those of us who are still living in the past and prefer to use real tube amps whenever possible, this is a way to get fractal’s extraordinary effect models into our rig. I’ve been using an fx8 since it came out and it’s fantastic but huge and heavy with early cpu capacity that is slightly lacking. This unit is about a quarter the size and weight with almost as much functionality. For everyone bitching about the price and comparing it to boss pedals (which to my ears are decent but decidedly pedestrian), try comparing it to the equivalent number of eventide and/or strymon and boutique pedals available in the unit. Suddenly it’s a bargain. Even if you added up the cost of an equal number of boss pedals, I think it’s still a great value. Just over the past year I’ve bought an hx stomp xl and a tc electronic plethora 5 to fill the role that this vp4 now excels in.
Its good to have differing opinions for sure. This plus my Road King 2 is the perfect amp rig. I'm a huge Fractal fan and the VP4 is absolutely smoking as a the only effects box I need for my amps.
I agree with you Matthew.. it's not for me either but if Fractal had their version of the HX Stomp I'd definitely buy one.. thanks for your honest opinion.
Looks like a nice unit. Fractal is entering the multi-effects market. Good for them and anyone else who has a need and prefers Fractal to the competition. I love my FM9. I’m also very into my HX Stomp. Perfect travel and grab and go rig. I have it on a mini board along with a Little Robbie Pilot and auxiliary switch. Versatile. I can take it off if I’m really pressed for space on a trip. I have separate presets on the Stomp. Some for full amp/cab sounds and some with effects only, for when I plug into an amp I like. Sounds great, so I don’t really need the VP4.
This really is for anyone that has a few amps and wants to reduce the size of their pedal board or someone who has a modeler with no or limited effect functionality. To me the VP4 works because allows me to use all my amps and as a Kemper user I got a pretty complete set of complimentary effects.
Bass player here. I have an Axe FX III Turbo and an FM3 Turbo but I also have amps and cabs. The VP4 seems super handy for situations where I just need a couple of effects. The FM3 is small but not small enough to toss into my gigbag. This however is. Not going to jump the gun right now, but this is on my radar and I'm pretty sure it'll end up in my arsenal.
Mine came in yesterday. I do not play with IR and use it through my cab with my power amp. I think the Drives suck and it doesn't sound as good as what I am currently using. Delays and reverbs are nice but so are mine. It's going back.
It's mostly a hit to me at the price point. It's not aimed at amp modeling on purpose, so how is that a miss? FM 3 for 300 more gives people that solution. I run a AFx iii Mk ii/ FC-6. My main preset runs 83ish percent. With this, I could offload a nice amount of cpu AND have more fx options at my 'fingertips' . What I call a miss is the MIDI connectors. Having to adapt from a AFxiii MIDI jack to the trs is pointless. I can't imagine there not being enough room in the box to maintain the connectivity standard set in the main units. I think this can and will, sit on rack shelves for folks that will be controlling it from the FC's keeping their floor footprint small. I know my FC-6, EV-2 and a Roland FS-7 is all I can imagine reaching playing guitar and singing at the same time. I'd like a 3U rack version with no switches. I am considering putting one in my rack.
Its has MIDI IN and OUT on 1/8" TRS like the Boss GT1000 CORE and other Boss units. If your amp is MIDI compatible (Hughes and Kettner) then you can send messages to change amp channels. But if your amp has the old-school relay jack like most amps, you'll need a midi device to do the amp switching (Morningstar and other MIDI switches feature relay switching with various options to work with different amps.)
Line 6 did it like 8 years ago with HX effects lol and tbh, a tonne of people use that. no cabs/amps isn't a deal breaker, not everyone buying guitar gear needs modellers
I had an Axe iii, prefered the sound, feel and scope of amps within Tonex. The Axe amps are great if you have patience to tweak, but unfortunately, I don’t... for someone like myself, seems like a perfect product. And looks way easier to use and adjust on the fly than an Axe counterpart. But who knows? I might buy one eventually. Never need more than 4 effects at once
I am considering using the VP-4 or a FM-3 in my studio. I have a Kemper Rack, a Tonex, pedals, and tube amps. So I don't need the amp sims in the FM3. But I like its added DSP and added I/O compared to the VP-4. Still, the price difference between FM3 and VP-4 almost makes it worth while to buy two VP-4s, putting one in front of, and one in the loop of my amps.
Thanks for the video m8! I have the h90 on order and I was contemplating if I should cancel for the VP4. But I think the routing option of the H90 (being able to place the two effects in different position in the signal path of your other pedals is making me decide to stick with my decision. No doubt the quality of the VP4 would be awesome, though!
It's amusing to see how people totally forget FX8 exists and can be had for less than vp4 - with more switches, routing options, relay switches, etc... The only positive is it's smaller size, so easier to fit in someone's pedalboard.
To me this is a product that was released maybe 3 years too late and for too much money in an overcrowded market that is currently on a downturn since no one has any money to spend.Their real 'killer application' for this thing is to replace the trifecta of Strymon effects pedals according to everyone pushing this thing, but that's a really specific, niche thing to target an entire product for. However I think people love the look and brand appeal of the Strymon pedals so we'll see what happens. I have a feeling this thing is actually Fractal trying to test out a simpler UI (and like you mentioned, this enclosure) and get some money back for their R&D. Every other modeler has a more user friendly UI. A side effect would be if the prayer & worship market catches on to the VP4 since those guys love burning cash on gear (ironically). We'll probably see the DNA of this product in the next FM3 successor. Also in the US Fractal only sells direct, so without distribution into Sweetwater, Guitar Center and other retailers, your casual players aren't picking this up. Sometimes I wonder if the company leadership spends too much time on their own fanboy forums, so I'm not totally sure who else this product is for.
Open it up to who? In the US they don't sell in retailers, so the people who are most aware of this are existing Fractal users / fans. They'd need to get wider distribution to truly 'open' the market.
Hi dear What is the difference between FM3 and VP4? FM3 can be connected to the audio interface without the torpedo captor because it is a cabinet simulator. VP4 is just a multi-effect and can be connected to the audio interface with Torpedo Captor. Why does it need the cabinet simulator? What number of ohms is needed to connect VP4 to the 8 or 16 ohm torpedo? Or is there no need for a torpedo to connect VP4 to the audio interface?
Soooo, is it like a new smaller version of the FX8?? I have been using my FX8 in front of my FM3 for the exact reason you mentioned - to free up CPU space in my FM3. I just couldn’t find it in my heart to sell my FX8, and I thought I was crazy putting it in front of my FM3, but I now feel a little better seeing that you mentioned that you could see the VP4 in front of the FM3. Anyhow, thanks again for another great video Mathew.
I had an fm3 and sold it. Unlike a lot of people I disliked the amp models as a live item. But I loved the rotary, and the fx. , that was almost worth the price. Anyway I wa selling some pedals and realized this might be the perfect solution for me extra pedal needs., like delays reverb, mod, maybe some drives. 4slots us perfect. I was thinking about a hx 1 or another eventide. But this has better functionality for the price is 2-3 decent pedals. Plus I can use this as an acoustic guitar right. Bug plus.
For me, it was a miss. I was REALLY excited for this product to come out because my band does occasional cover tune gigs where we do things like "Grunge Night" or "80's Metal night" and so on. I wanted to bring a real amp and cab and have this in a 4 cable method as advertised, just for something different, sound wise. My complete fail.........this wonderful piece of gear does NOT change amp channels like the AX8 used to do. Why this very small item was not included or thought about when everyone talks about running this in 4 cable mode is beyond me. Don't want to tap dance. Just want to hit one button for one move like my FM9.

The VP4 is not for me either, I entered the Fractal world for the excellent amp simulation of course I also use the very good effects of my FM9. There is certainly a market for this product, I guess the FX8 had found its niche of users
I am also an amp guy live but also have an FM3 for home use. Live, I use the original FX8, which is really the big brother to the VP4. I run it in 4CM and also utilise the onboard TRS facility to switch the channel on my Mesa MKV/25. It has everything this has, and more. I have no reason to 'upgrade' to this, so this is a miss for me as well.
Forgot to mention in the video, but I don't think that the VP4 has built-in amp switching capabilities like the GT-1000 and other similar units. Would have liked to see that included in a product meant to be used with tube amps.
I'm not sure exactly who exactly it's aimed at, maybe h90 users. There's no way I'd drop my Strymons/ThorpyFX/Keeley and UAFX pedals for this and i wouldn't want to integrate it on my board either it would replace nothing I already have and I'd see it as a downgrade. Still have Axe FX 2XL for scratch tracks at home and other than the drives which i hate, some the effects are decent and better than Line 6 effects for sure but they're not great effects. Recently looked at loads of Axe 3 videos to see if the effects have improved much since Axe 2 and they mostly sound the same. The newish improved Fractal spring reverb algo for example doesn't even come close to the spring mode in the Golden reverberator and even the Golden doesn't touch a real spring SurfyBear pedal. There's just too many great options around already to choose from for this to be a viable option. It even looks dated, who the hell puts visible screws on the face of a unit these days it looks really really cheap
Its a miss to me since I love Fractal and I have no interest. That tells me its a miss if your current customers are not interested. Effects only is great but limited to 4 at once no amp switching without going down the midi route and limited switches is a no go. I already own an FM3 so no sale here. If I wanted effects o ly Id buy an HX effects just based on switches available.
Honestly I don't get this product considering the price. I mean Boss just released GX-10 for $300 less and it also has amp models. What am I missing here. What makes the VP4 worth $300 more than the boss.
@@AudioAtmosthey aren’t superior in any way at all BOSS literally invented every single thing that’s in this pedal. BOSS effects are number 1 and always have been.
Boss isn't Fractal. USDA Choice is fine. It fills the stomach and tastes like steak. However, once you try some dry-aged Prime meat you realize there exists a spectrum of quality unbeknownst to many. FAS is Prime in this meat analogy. Particularly with the amp models. 😉
@@SixStringHarmonies your trippin. Literally. Fractal is great, but almost ALWAYS just for fan boys. Just like Kemper or Helix or Axe. They’re all fan boy derived devices. And not one of them has better FX than BOSS. And yes, I have them all and have had a Kemper for 13 years. Helix since the day the came out. Still a have a QCT, All 3 AxeFx and an FM9 and a rack unit. Some of them may have ONE special effect that is super badass that is proprietary to the device but, none of them have FX across the board better than BOSS. Every single modeler ever made is literally trying to copy Roland/Boss. All of them. I have an MX5 and it actually has some Chorus that rivals BOSS. As far as Flange, Rotary, Verb, Delay, Pitch Shifting, Slicer, OD, Chorus, DeFretter or even S-Bend. None of Fractal version are better. Kemper is way behind. Axe is close and QC is close. But again, BOSS is what every single one of them has been trying to emulate for well over a decade. All of the units are pretty spectacular, but to try and convince yourself Fractal is other worldly compared to BOSS is just fan boy speak.
@@SixStringHarmonies Not even trying to compare amp models, just saying that Boss/Roland has effects on par with fractal, in fact fractal has many Boss or Roland effects it models. Pretty sure Boss/Roland can model their own pedals as good as good as fractal can. If your looking at it as a pure effects unit these are going to be comparable. The difference is that the Boss has Amp models and whether these are comparable with fractal is inconsequential because Fractal doesn't include any. Plus the Boss/Roland pedal has a built in expression pedal too. If your looking at Effects unit vs Effects unit the Boss/Roland unit is a better value and in a blind test your going to hear the difference between a Boss/Roland chorus effect vs a Fractal . Oh yea I'm a Fractal customer and own three of their units, and have heard side by side comparisons of Boss/Roland effects and Fractal and the "steak is of the same quality". I'm not a fanboy of either company.
Money grab on their current axe fx iii software and algorithms because they know they will need an all new Fractal with updated software, hardware and algorithms soon.

I bought the VP4 a d love but, I will get a FM3
Its a miss to me since I love Fractal and I have no interest. That tells me its a miss if your current customers are not interested. Effects only is great but limited to 4 at once no amp switching without going down the midi route and limited switches is a no go. I already own an FM3 so no sale here. If I wanted effects o ly Id buy an HX effects just based on switches available.
$700 for some stale decade-old tech multi-fx that may be equal in quality to a $90Amazon China special...yeah they messed this up
no
Was there some kind of point to making this video?
Fractal wants money from amp people in addition to digital people.
Honestly I don't get this product considering the price. I mean Boss just released GX-10 for $300 less and it also has amp models. What am I missing here. What makes the VP4 worth $300 more than the boss.
The superior Fractal FX and things you really can’t totally appreciate unless you decide to really understand the unit or honestly own one.
Nope
Blah Blah Blah get to the point man stop rambling on about what you have and what you do.. I’m outta here
Thanks for stopping by
Money grab on their current axe fx iii software and algorithms because they know they will need an all new Fractal with updated software, hardware and algorithms soon.
