Talking Watches With Moki Martin

- To a special niche within the watch collecting community, military-issued watches are the object of great fascination. From WWII field watches to Milsubs and Kon-Tiki IDFs, a watch with a military-specific past is undoubtedly a special and rare thing that survives as a token from a life spent in a very specific sort of role. In my mind, better still is a military-issued watch whose original owner is not only still alive, but still loves his watches. All of this serves as an introduction to Philip "Moki" Martin, one of the most interesting and humble collectors I have ever met. For the full story, go to: www.hodinkee.com/articles/tal...

Dear Tudor PR-people,
Put that man on a plane to Geneva and make him his own gold dive-watch!
Sincerely,
Everyone :)
Tudor would receive millions in PR value for the cost of a flight, food hotel and a watch.
Exactly my thought!!
Abso freaking lutly a great idea. Then sell a limited edition
Rodrigue2707 that man 👨🏼 surely deserves a gold Tudor watch.
This would be better money spent by Tudor than any brand ambassador could ever be
This is the kind of guy you could sit and listen to all day!
john1959ism who u telling!! I’m gonna watch this episode at least 3 more times today
Probably the best episode yet, amazing history and an amazing man.
I cannot believe you’re a watch guy. I used to watch your videos probably 1 to 2 years ago before i ever got into the hobby. Good to see you’re part of the community :D
Agreed.... Kudos on this one boys......perfect timing and I bet the stories off the air would be 1000x better. Keep up the great work
I totally agree
Agree
Don't we all love glorifying imperialist murderers because of the cool story their watch carries!?
Moron.
I have nothing against David Beckham or Lady GaGa but it should be guys like this getting payed to promote the Tudor brand.
What a great guy and great stories. No fake patina here.
Something tells me he doesn't quite have what would appeal to millennials.
@@trevbarlow9719 I'm a millennial and he certainly makes me want a tudor submariner
Moki is turning me on to the Tudor.
@@trevbarlow9719 disagree
Of course he makes us want a Tudor; we are already watch guys. But to bring in millennials, a Beckham or Lady Gaga is better.
That sun burn mark on the wrist.... tells ya' this man is a real watch guy :-)
peleti027 a middle management executive would have the same mark from desk diving a hublot too.
Eugene Ng ehm.... yesss?
@@peleti027 so real watch guy term is quite loosely represented here.
@@entw168 Whatever....
I have the same tanline from cycling/hiking with my G-Shock.
Fitting episode for Veterans day.
Kongmw, yours is without comparison, the best comment.
This is one of those videos where you wished you could hit the like button more than once. Also, James is a fantastic interviewer. He actually lets the subject talk, and not just seek out opportunities to flex his watch knowledge. Hodinkee, THESE are the stories we live for! 😊
Absolutely!
If he cared about James grabbing a watch on the table without asking he wouldn’t be doing talking watches.
Like Wei Koh lol.
Now THIS is talking watches. Not some entitled schmuck who bought a new diamond-encrusted APRO to celebrate his latest movie or sports title. Great stories from a decorated veteran. As cool as the watches are, the stories are so much better. But I wanna hear about that knife!
I think your comment is more cliche than anything you mentioned
@@indiefruit The reason it's cliche, is that it's true. Submariners and old tool watches are now luxury items that idiots with way too much money to burn, because of this. This guy had some crazy and intense experiences with that old beast. It's very cool to see some of the history.
Agreed!
Marc - Your comment is rooted in pure jealousy. If you were successful enough to be in a movie or win a sports title, why wouldn't you celebrate with a watch too? How are those occasions any less momentous than anyone else's triumphs?
bluemystic7501 real easy. Our “big life accomplishments” are certainly worth celebrating with a great watch. But none will be as epic or important as stories like in this video. My wedding, or the birth of my child, or graduating from college will not contribute at all to the legend of that watch. These stories are the reason these watches are what they are today. Don’t take it personally.
Any chance we could get a Pt.2 with Moki??
GNAR GNAR , definitely need to see more of Moki
Would love a part 2!
Even better if it’s a long format episode. Could easily be an hour. Make it happen Hodinkee!
Agreed
And please Hodinkee don’t give us highlights, we all love stories like this one in details.
+1
Putting my tudor sub on a nato immediately.
I don't have a Tudor but my appreciation just grew leaps and bounds!
Lol that's a great look!
I’m curious what kind of nato strap on Moki’s watch 🤔
Man, if that first old Tudor could talk....
David Smith it just did through this gentleman here.
It could tell great stories but, it would have to kill you after it dad! Lol
Fascinating stories behind each watch from a guy who used the watches for their proper purpose and not kept in some safe somewhere. You don’t have to have a ton of watches to have a fascinating episode of talking watches.
By far my favorite taking watches. Great piece of journalism and featuring an unsung hero. More like this one please!
I hope he gets to make a gold Rolex like he wanted
now we are talking watches, this is how the show must be. this guy deserved a gold watch hodinkee.
This is one of the best Hodinkee episodes I’ve seen.
No nonsense watches for a no nonsense guy.
We need to thank that man for serving our country.
Refreshing to see this instead of the usual millionaire beige yuppies with Newman’s and Porches. Great, great video!
Moki is one of my grandpas friends! He really is a humble, amazing man and artist. My grandparents have his art around her home. Always admired this man since i was a child
That’s an “Olongapo” style bracelet. As mentioned by Martin, he got it from Subic Bay, Olongapo, Philippines in case anyone is looking for it.
The best talking watches so far! Every other guest you’ve had wants these watches for their history and this is 1 of the guys that made that history! Thanks for your service sir and thank you HODINKEE for letting this hero tell his story!
What A Legend.
best episode yet, what an amazing story
Fitting for Veteran’s Day - a great story and an honor to our Navy and all Veterans!
Great story from an hero
What an amazing interview! This man, he lived through so much, much of what no one would want to experience but ,man, is he interesting to listen to and seems to have had a remarkable life.
This was my favorite episode by far. Of course I say that about every episode. This shows that at the heart it's not about collecting watches it's about loving watches. No matter what the cost it's the story that makes the watch special. Too all who care about the watch they wear everyday, we are bonded by the love we have for our friend who sits on our wrist and never let's us lose track of time. After all with such a short time on this earth our time is so valuable.
Best episode to date
It's a shame Rolex doesn't engage too much on social media promotion because this guy would have his solid gold Rolex if they did.
Hodinkee needs to make it happen
Best episode I've seen yet, could listen to that man for hours. Thanks for your service Moki. Get this man his desired solid gold Rolex for all he's done, and for his service.
Great ad for Tudor. Way better than celebrity endorsements.
I had no particular love for Tudor until this video. These stories are amazing.
I watched this story a few times already. This time with my new BB 41 on the wrist. I could sit here and listen to stories like this all day/.
As a man with a military past (not US) this video has touched me and resonated with me in so many ways. I can't stop wiping tears from eyes. Such a genuine and humble man who truly loves his watches.
A true American badass, thank you for your service Moki! Best episode of talking watches by far, no competition. This is what these watches are truly made for
In few minutes, I felt more connected and touched by this man than most people I've known in my whole life. I was literally there where he was.
Finally!!!!!!!!!!! A history of guy and his watch.
Is it just me but Im enjoying this one even more than the John Mayer ones. This Man has a real story to tell... This memorys and the watches connected to them are priceless...
Non-celebrity interviews are soooo much better. Everyday people with great stories. Love it
hands down the best episode of talking watches.... not even close!!!!
i think many viewers would agree- another episode with Moki is absolutely needed.
My favorite “ Talking Watches” to date. True American Hero.
James is the best talking watches guy, followed his reviews on RUclips for a number of years, even bought a watch off him once. A real gent!
Definitely the best talking watches episode ever. Great for people who don’t understand infatuation with watches.
Watches are not accessories, they are tools. Now this, this is why I fell in love with watches in the first place. What an amazing person and a great interview. One of the best to date.
Wow Tudor should this man to advertise there watches or use this piece.
Instead of Beckham, who`s the ambassador and is always wearing Rolex at the events... =O
Tudor has lady ga ga instead!
Wow, much respect for Moki; watch collector and above all, a hero. Truly humbled.
How did I just now stumble upon this version of talking watches?? Incredible man, incredible stories, incredible watches. More like this HODINKEE.
Great stories , great interview , great watches , and one amazing man .
This is by far THE best "Talking Watches" episode.
It's a shame this only has 76K views. This was one of my favorite Talking Watches episodes ever.
Hodinkee, listen to your audience, this is the kind of episode we want. Best episode so far.
Do not know how anyone could give this video a thumbs down. Epic life stories with his watches. Just wonderful.
The best episode. Understated, yet powerful
My favorite two topics: watches and first hand history from a veteran! Golden! Respect!
I can already tell I'll be watching this one over and over again.
What a stud, Moki is! A REAL LIFE HERO! Great episode and thanks for doing the interview James.
As a 20 year Navy Kid, this is by far my favorite Talking Watches Episode yet!
Spectacular Watches & Stories!
Thank you for your service Sir!
Just beautiful..... real people with amazing stories, I could spend an afternoon listening to Moki....a true gentleman
Refreshing! Finally....someone who used his watch as the tool it was always intended to be. Let this be a lesson to all of us who baby our watches. They can take more than the human body can! Great episode!
This man is the reason why I’m currently searching for a Tudor Submariner. Best Talking Watches episode yet.
I want more Moki stories !!
That’s real vintage. Not buying an old watch but getting a watch new, wearing it at work and free time and collect scars, Marcs and histories with it. Great talking watches and a big salut 👍🏻
I must of watched times 15 times. Such a cool guy and wicked collection and history with them
Please have people like him who have many stories to tell. This was among the best ive seen from this channel.
I watched this awesome episode awhile back. I didn't realize this hero's back story until yesterday when I finished a book called, "make your bed". The author Admiral McRaven spoke about Moki Martin. What a true humble American legend. Thank you for your service sir!
A true American hero! I support Paralyzed Veterans Of America and Learned about Mr. Martin in the latest mailing I just received. I am a proud supporter and will continue to support our veterans. God bless Mr. Martin and all veterans. 👍🏻🇺🇸
I can only wish my watches will have stories like this in the future. When I'm old and grey, but still young at heart, remembering all the stories that I've lived with my faithful watch on my wrist. Only time will tell.
Would love a longer version with this guy. Amazing. Thank you for your service.
Finally, finally, finally. A real man Talking Watches, with a real watch and a real watch collection with meaning and pride. Mahalo nui loa Moki! Imua! Kulia I Ka Nu'u! Aloha.
Wow! Great episode! This guy was a real hero and the real deal. Never knew the US Navy issued for real, Tudor watches to Navy Seals. At the same time James Bond was also wearing Rolex in his films. No wonder Tudor and Rolex became the cool watch to own and wear. Proud to be a Submariner owner.
One of, if not the best episode to date. These are the types of stories we'd like to hear more often on Talking Watches. A small, humble collection backed by incredible stories and a rich history. Worth the long wait.
Unsung heroes, talking watches. You should do more of this!
Simply Brilliant! Mr. Martin may very well be the best subject Hodinkee has profiled thus far. Thank you Hodinkee for the marvelous job in interviewing a modern hero.
Amazing episode. This totally changes the way I view Tudor as a brand. Well Done!
This is one of the best episodes on talking watches. #Respect to this great Seal.
Hodinkee, you need to follow up with this amazing guy. Get on to Tudor and sort out something special, would I buy a Tudor cos David Beckham wears one? No. Would I wear a Tudor because Mr Moki Martin wears one? Hell yeah!. Mr Moki Martin you're a legend
Yes! James Stacey is a great host
One if the best watch videos yet on any channel. What an interesting gentleman with fabulous stories. Tudor should capitalize on this heritage even more... what provenance!
Canada_watch definitely better than David Beckham.
Tudor should send this guy a few watches and have him be a spokesman
@@matthewscott3689 That's a no brainer👍
My fav talking watches by now. A military watch worn in the military and told by a soldier. This watches and storys are amazing.
Who else wants Hodinkee to do a part two of Moki’s stories with his watches and amazing journeys? Better yet Hodinkee please give us full length, not just the highlights please. Thanks I’m advance
Best Talking Watches I've seen so far. This one and the Canadian astronaut are fantastic. Make the man his gold watch.
The best and most meaningful episode on watches ever !
Best episode yet!! What a man ! Could Listen to his stories all day. Thanks hodinkee 🙏🏻
This is my favorite episode of Talking Watches.. great job @Hodinkee for bringing on an awesome guy like Moki. I hope in the future we can get more episodes like this!!! Get him his Gold Tudor!
I remember when you guys 1st posted this Talking Watches video. One of your BEST stories.
One of the best Talking Watches I've seen, please do more videos with old veterans talking about their watches and experiences! Also, if you know anyone you can call at Rolex, tell them to make that man a gold watch!!! He's more than earned it.
A year later, still my favorite video from hodinkee
Hands down one of the best Talking Watches video ever. Salute to the man, Salute to Tudor.
how could anyone give this video a thumbs down. What a guy

Just amazing. The best Hodinkee episode yet ! Thank you.
This was the best Talking Watches episode so far! Great to see some of these watches with a genuine history and back story. All of those watches are amazing as is, the stories make them better.

These are the episodes I look out for!!! Such profound and fascinating history.
love storytime with grandpas. great video and would love to hear more stories like this!
I absolutely enjoyed this interview... I don't know how Hodinkee brought this interview together - thank you
Fantastic history behind Mr. Martin’s Submariner, lends credence to Tudor’s military heritage. A very enjoyable episode showcasing a real Tudor ambassador.
Great video! Love that James is doing the Talking Watches - by far my favourite interviewer .. Great stories in this episode - truly what makes this series so great..
