- It’s not often you get to be in the presence of true greatness. And I know on this site we tend to talk up how wonderful this watch is or how revelatory that watch is. We even, at at times, say things like “this is a once-in-a-lifetime” chance to see this or that. And we mean it when we say it, but we are speaking in relative terms, because we are, after all, talking about watches. But today, I'll speak in far more literal terms, because in this special episode of Talking Watches I talk to an actual living legend. In fact, just a few weeks ago in Palm Beach, Florida, I had the honor of sitting down with a man who is the very best in the world at something - someone who remains at the pinnacle of his sport, though his reign ended decades ago. I'm talking about Jack Nicklaus. Yes, the Jack Nicklaus. For the full story, go to www.hodinkee.c...
One woman, one watch, one amazing life.
Well... About the woman part...
one money clip lol
@@NESTEAftw what do you mean?
A guy that in all his years in the public eye, has never had one controversial moment. He won and lost with class. Great husband and father. Pure class and the GOAT. Thanks!
Before the internet lol
Did you notice how sharp Jack is. He remembers all the minutia of the black marlin, the long drive, the dates, etc.. Pretty amazing man and a great story! Thanks.
Pure class. He is not only a great ambassador for golf and the sports world, but he's a great ambassador for the human species in general. Well done.
Definitely one of the best episodes. Showing off a collection of rare and expensive watches impresses people, but telling about a unique emotional connection to one watch touches hearts. A true one-watch-guy's romance.
Only 1 watch and still one of the best episodes of TW - loved it!!
*Exactly! I've been watching the bear for years and this was a video that couldn't be missed. Much love from all your fans in beautiful BANGOR, MAINE where recreational marijuana is legal, home prices are still some of the lowest in the entire nation, auto insurance is the lowest in America, taxes are low and the scenery is absolute nirvana. Spread the word! BANGOR, MAINE.*
Great to see one of my fav fragrance reviewer here :)
Thanks buddy!!
Yeah...this is just fantastic.
Cause it's been through so much didn't talks about movement or anything, just the stories and sometimes that's even more important than anything else.
Only one watch, yet still one of the best episodes of Talking Watches
The Golden Bear. Such a class act and nice guy. Great to see a successful man with a 1 watch collection. Not a trace of pretentiousness or arrogance and best of all, he doesn't have a horde of high end watches that get stored in a safety deposit box with zero wrist time. He's definitely my kind of guy. Heck, I remember my Dad and I watching Jack, Arnold, Chi Chi, and Lee Trevino compete back in the day on television. Such a simpler time back then...
Greatest golfer of all time and an even better person. Jack is an absolute class act. Just think what that watch will bring at auction!
I'm actually going to bid on it!
I would say millions
Paul Newman's daytona just sold for over 17 million....I'm guessing more than that for this one.
And great to think that that money will go to help kids in need through his charity. Just one more sign of class from this living legend.
Talking watch with Jack Nicklaus
Aaahhh you beat me to it
Me too!! Fuck [leaves the video now]
me also.
Jack may have the ultimate "One Watch" collection! I can't even imagine what that watch will achieve in the auction world...$10M maybe? More? Congratulations on landing this interview, and thanks to Jack for sharing.
Depends when it's sold. In about 20-30 years, Jack's watch is probably worth $50m. I think if he does sell it, bidders will take that into account. I wouldn't be shocked if it did sell for more than Newman's Daytona the first time around. Tiger isn't breaking the record.
Jack Nicklaus....wow what a thank you!!! Talking Watches raises the bar... and as for giving the proceeds to charity - true greatness!
What a man, what a legend. What a watch....and humble with it.
Lol, the 4 bad years joke was so smooth.
Fine you can double your money....Ill give you $600 for it.
gamebred26 What a deal, he should take that 😂😂😂
No one will ever top this story. The time and legacy this man and watch has shared is unsurpassable. What a story.
This is the reason why I watch these series. The stories behind the watches are everything. And all possible because he used a watch the way it was meant to be used.
The picture at 7:17, the sport LEGENDS in that pic! I doubt there will ever be a greater collection of athletic talent in any picture ever again! AMAZING
can you name all of them ? there are few i don't know unfortunately
So far Jordan, Pele, Ali, Sampras, Gretzky, Woods, Jim Brown, Elway, bille Jean King, Chris Evert, Niklaus, Monica Seles, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russel, evander holyfield there are 4 im not sure of lol
Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Tiger Woods
Joe Montana front right
The best 7 minutes I've had on YT that I can remember. Thanks for sharing.
Jack Nicklaus & Bobby Jones.
Are just beyond measure, in their thought, achievements & the positive impact... Cheers!
Great stories from a great man ! Very humble a class act.
The "Forever Watch" does exist! What a delight to watch!!!
I will start saving all my pennies and hopefully own a new one off the store.
My wrist broke the sound barrier clicking on this video
what about your finger?
Lance Pickell Is your watch okay?
I love how this gentleman has a modest view of his possessions.
I’ve seen this episode about 10 times now and I get emotional every single time I do.. this is the best episode ever.
Nothing fake about this man. Just a great person. One watch for 53 years. That's what I want to have. I have owned many watches, and only one lasted 13 years. It was a Diesel. Not a Rolex, but still the longest I've owned one. I am in search of an automatic, that will be with me for the rest of my life. It won't be a Rolex, because I don't have that kind of money, but this particular video inspire to look for the one, that will go the distance.
This is a stunningly well produced short film. Great work by the whole team.
I like everything about this gentleman. He understands the value of the piece and how much it has meant to him that he will not just pass it down to his kids. On top of that, great true stories without being cocky about it and just genuine class for everything he has dine with his life.
My most favorite of all your videos thus far. Thank you.
Jack seems like an awesome guy. He has so many memories with that watch.
Brilliant, absolute gentleman and what a role model should be. Lovely watch and episode.
I want that particular effing watch that he personally owned for my collectibles.
Jack Nicklaus is a true hero, along with some of the sport of golfs' other greats. It's always inspiring to hear about their charity efforts and it, I think, inspires us all to appreciate what we have and, if we are lucky, what we are able to give to others in need and less fortunate than us - whether it be a family in need of shelter above their heads due to a hurricane or a family in need of food due to crop failure.
What a fantastic interview! Jack Nicklaus is one amazing man who has one amazing lady as his partner. Amazing.
Unreal, one of the best yet !
OH yea, Ben Love the ceramic Daytona on your wrist !!!!
The first Talking Watches video where we're not talking about the watch! Just shows that what makes something special is not how much it costs but the memories and associations that go with it. This video would have been just as good if it was a Timex. Class act.
I never comment but this video was absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Good human and good personality. God Bless him
One of the best episodes of talking watches
HODINKEE! We need more talking watches! By far the most entertaining and inspiring segment
This is hands down the best Talking Watches episodes ever.
I had no idea who this guy is, don't like golf. But just by seeing the way he talks about his belongings, achievements and life stories, I have become a big fan :) Real cool gentleman with a hunters attitude.
What a gentleman, we all can learn from him
What a wonderful gentleman, they don't make em like that anymore I guess. Great new concept for Talking Watches, I really enjoyed it.
Saw Jackat the Marriott in Atlanta perimeter center in 1980...he had that Rolex President on....amazing how many places and how many photos that Rolex President has been in.
Great show, thank you.
BIG Thanks Hodinkee. A Top Notch interview indeed. One life-partner, One fish (albeit massive), One watch, One money-clip, One helluva guy.
Until now my previous favorite Talking Watches video was John Goldberger....This is a fantastic interview with a completely down to earth, grounded, and honorable man. Thank you Hodinkee for this interview.
Thanks for talking watches to a great golfer. Amazing. I still have my watch from 1965 that my grandmother gave me. I've got my Seiko watch from Vietnam circa 1968. 🦅 Eaglegards...
I'm in love with this episodes and this one particularly was so great , only one watch and still amazing history about.
This has to be one of the best episodes so far. Good stuff !!
It just goes to show, you only really need one watch. Great interview.
I guess the only thing Jack has been collecting is trophies
This mans achievements are only overshadowed by his wonderful humility.
Its not about the value of the watch, but the memories and sentiments acquired during your lifetime!! ✌🏿love this episode
He was great in "The Shining". In all seriousness, Nicklaus is the real deal, great guy.
That's Jack Nicholson
phototristan lol
Tao Leo Are you sure?
lol
I bought an early 1990s Rolex Datejust two tone with jubilee bracelet 2 years ago and recently had thoughts about selling it to upgrade to the newest model. But after seeing Jack's watch, it made me think that if he can wear his Day Date for over 50 years and not upgrade his watch once, I can certainly be forever content with my watch too, even if it is older. Sometimes its a beautiful thing to just be humble and appreciate what you already have.
jeromio_peezy / You are a class act too sir. Most intelligent comment I have read in a long time. Cheers.
well said, bro
Class act as always, interesting to see how through the years and changing fashions the watch really holds up!! Some great pics in there..
What a stunning piece of film. Rich with history and respect for an icon.
this a my favorite episode so far... thank you for sharing this video
This is a cool episode. I like how this vid captured his personal relationship with his timepiece.
The greatest video and yet, only ONE watch. So much history
One of my all time hero’s . A true mans man. What a guy.
I'd like to hear more stories about one watch person, i think it's more intimate and interesting sometimes to hear their stories rather than a collector.
Great interview that showcases the relationship between a watch and a man. Jack's a great ambassador for the game and for life in general.
This is the best episode by far.
+1! One of the BEST TW! This is a real tribute to a man and his watch! Thanks !
Wow... How simple yet how wonderful!! It felt as though I was hypnotized for 8 minutes.
Loved this episode. Best Talking Watches episode ever.
This warms my heart reminds me of my dad. He is, also, not a watch collector and only wears one watch, which is a President Day-Date.
Lived by the Brentwood Golf Course back in the seventies. Remember as a kid sneaking in to watch him play. Legend
It's strange... I visited the Rolex showroom at Hong Kong airport when I was waiting for a connecting flight, but they didn't ask me to choose a free watch as a thanks for being there.... : \
Jack Nicklaus is a class act and an half! Great champion and man.
Great Job , Jack seems like a real genuine and appreciative individual who deserves all his success And by the way I love his taste in watches
Much respect and admiration for the humanitarian commitment. Thank you! You are a true inspiration.
So I see what your doing here.....clearly showing provinaunce for this watch prior to its auction. That said it's for charity (very worthy one) and from a genuine superstar. Love the video....love Jack.....hope it raises millions for his charity....I'd buy it in a heart beat if I could. Talking watches as always top of its game.
Only one watch featured and yet the best episode for me. Indeed, you own the watch, the watch doesn't own you.
I absolutely love Hodinkee and this episode was one of the best..!!
Did anyone else click "like" before they even watched this? Well done, Ben.
Perfect ,well done SIR,nice watch with a history and hope it reaches the highest price ever especially when it s going to a charity for kids ,respect
I'm not even a sports guy or really a watch guy even, but this video got me clicking "Thumbs Up" so quickly
I’m not a golf fan (obviously understand who he is however) but this guy is awesome. I love how he could have a rotation of beautiful watches but stuck to the one.
What a fantastic story and interview.
What an awesome interview with an awesome guy. Jack is the best.
Athletic accomplishments aside, one of the many things to appreciate from so many men from this generation and the generation that preceded it specifically, that cohort who lived through The Great Depression or were the children of people who went through it, is that they tend(ed) to be simple, non-acquisitive people who were not prone to excess.
One woman. One watch. One money clip.
My father and his friends were about Jack Nicklaus's age, and none of them collected anything material. They (the majority) served, they worked, and they provided. No time for frivolity, surfing the Internet, laying around playing X-Box. Notice, that in those photographs from the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's you don't see those men skipping down the street wearing flip flops or chit chatting on their iphones either.
Tony Soprano: "Whatever happened to Gary Coopah?"
I think Jack might have gotten taken on that Rolex though. I have the exact same watch, and I got mine for $10 in Times Square.
This watch records his achievements and career, is a life partner.
Amazing! Good to see Ben back!
By far the greatest golfer in history, not just for the records... the man is just class
A true one watch collection that blows anyone else's "collection".
Great to see Jack on Hodinkee. This the best video about watches I have seen, thanks for sharing your history with us on youtube. Awesome
Great Jack Nicklaus video.
Wow, I was here when the first episode premiered and I never missed one, this is my favorite episode by far.
Best Talking Watches to date.
This is probably the "one watch guy" William Massena was talking about 😃
Sector Mentor Was thinking the same thing!!
Sector Mentor thinking the same thing 😂😂
Awesome man a class act I love him so much thanks for all the memories
Best episode to date! Thanks
CRM Jewelers destroyed his Royal Oak Offshore because he played golf on the driving range for 3 hours and this dude played his whole life with a day date. Let that sink in. So much for AP "sports watches"
ONE watch his whole life. I love that!!
Favorite series! Great episode!
Envying such simplicity despite all the riches in the world. Wearing only one Rolex all his life is the most elegant, simple and classy act of the Golden Bear.
Being a fellow Buckeye, this makes me proud of being born in Ohio (at least the old Ohio). God Bless You Golden Bear, you are the BEST!
And to think that gold President was made so beautiful back in 1966. Wow, Rolex does it right even to this day.
Wow - Jack Nicklaus with a great watch. with an amazing history - and his only watch.
