Thanks for the Galvo co2 content. I am leaning towards this for marking nylon fabrics for my custom gear. Currently cutting and marking with a 60watt gantry, which is good for cutting but slow for marking.

Any content is great to see, been watching since the beginning :) good to see you again bud.
The 4x mentioned / referred to is the beam expander in the machine between the laser source and the laser head. You can’t really use any size expander without having other matching equipment or you may end up with some issues/unintended effects. It takes the beam from the source (the physical beam size can vary from source to source, but lets say 1.8mm +/- .2) and multiplies it’s size, before going into the mirrors in the head. If those mirrors aren’t large enough, you lose power and will heat up/potentially damage the head components, and would also not give you the full power at the material. Going smaller on expander than the other components can handle isn’t really ideal either. That looks to be a 10mm head (in reference to the size of mirrors in the head), they make larger ones like 20mm which can carry a larger beam (so a bigger expander would be great for that bigger size head). The other factor is lens compatibility. Something you don’t often see with UV and fiber lenses as being a problem is the input aperture of the lens (how big of a hole there in the back of the lens to accept a beam). Co2 galvo lenses come with a lot of input sizes (and match up to various expander/head sizes) where you can use a bigger aperture on a smaller beam, but using a smaller aperture on a bigger beam means you are literally giving a big beam a small hole to fit through and drowning out the edges like a cookie cutter slicing off the edges that don’t fit through. This can eventually cause lens damage from heat if you’re blocking part of the beam, but the other thing it does is cut your power output at the material down because of not receiving full beam through the lens.
The idea/theory behind the bigger beam/expander/head is that when pumping a beam into a focusing lens, the bigger the input beam, the smaller the dot size when in focus, and therefor capable of a potentially smaller dot size for detailed work. I’m not bashing 10mm heads either, It doesn’t make the 10mm head setup bad (and other supporting parts for that matter), it just depends on your needs as an engraver and what type of work you’re doing. It may be wasted upgrade cost if you don’t need to move up in expander/head/lens aperture sizing.
Idk the actual dpi capability difference, but I’d love to get the output of the 10mm head under a microscope to compare with my 20mm head+8x expander with same size lens to see how much that really means as a tough comparison.
That also leads into bigger lens = bigger dot at focus, but another cool thing about co2 galvo lenses is that they have multi element lenses (think compound lenses for gantry, kinda) which can actually give you the ability to reduce your dot size. That’s a whole different thing and an even longer explanation, so I won’t bore anyone further with that lol.
