- The words "self taught" are thrown around a lot in the nail community. But what does this mean exactly? And how does a self taught nail tech differ from a licensed nail tech? Today I'll be answering those questions. And by the end of the video, you'll have a better understanding of the two. Woohoo nail education!!

Your video is spot on. I had been doing my nails for years! I paid over $4000 and spent 600 hours to get through school. The schools goal is to get you to pass state board. There was one gal, sweet as can be, who's finished nails looked like she had done them with her feet. State board doesn't care if your nails look like crap. Sanitation, sanitation, sanitation is their #1 priority. Not spreading disease is their goal.
It’s ridiculous how out of touch school can be. Sanitation is very important, no denying that. However, students need to learn how to do nails as well. That’s the whole point lol
I know!
I got my license in 1989. They really nit-picked on techniques back then. You had to know the sanitation too (though not as much as today).
Tennessee requires 600 hours for Manicurist and 1500 for Cosmetologist. I was licensed in cosmetology.
I'm getting reinstated. I take the law exam in December and the practical sometime after confirmation.
I have to be reinstated because I let my license expire too long ago.
A cosmetologist can work as a nail tech in Tennessee. I plan on trying to do that. I actually like nails better than hair, but I will be able to do both.
I went through nail school and got liscenced in 1989 and had a very successful career for 20 years, then got beyond burned out and let my liscense lapse in in 2009 ....I'm now back in school because in my state you can't go more than 3 yes without being liscenced, so I want them back now, and let me tell you...school is EXACTLY the same as it was 32 yes ago and you're right...you don't really learn how to do nails.... mostly book work and hanging out and doing each other's nail and nails of those coming to the school to get services. My school gives you one kit of Young Nails and besides that, you have to supply your own products to practice with, they supply the products to do customers.
I have always concidered myself a nail tech even without my liscense but having that liscense is very important to me... it's very hard going to school now, just hanging out with very young girls at my age...my state requires 300 hrs and I'm right at the 200 mark right now....getting liscenced is everything to me or I wouldn't be going through this. My advice is, even if u get burned out and quit doing nails...keep your CE up and keep your liscense...
This is such great advice! Always renew your license even if you’re not practicing anymore. Also, I can’t believe nail school hasn’t changed that much since you first went. So much has changed in the industry when it comes to products and techniques so these things should be taught in school.
You’re almost done so keep it up!
Hi Donna! May I ask if you are from Michigan?
I'm in a similar situation. I got my cosmetology license in 1989. My license expired in 1998 when I was in the Navy. I had made other plans and pursued a different career. I worked in health care in and out of the military for 18 years and got burnt out.
My state, Tennessee will let me take the state board exam to get my license reinstated. I've been 30+ years out of practice. My hours are still good even though it was long ago. I have been studying on my own and practicing on mannequins.
I have to pass the state law exam and the practical exam. I'm scheduled for the law test in December...
Thank you much for this I learned a lot I plan on going to nail tech school to learn more watching your video make me excited to go to school
I’m so glad to hear that! You’re gonna kill it!
Thank you for this video! I’m currently in nail school and was beginning to think, wth am I doing here? I ain’t learning nothing that I don’t already know. I just have to continue to remind myself that I’m here to get my piece of paper. Can’t wait to finish so I can really get to work.
Haha exactly! Obtain your license and watch lots of RUclips videos. That’s what I did 😊
So to get more certificates as in other nail services e.g. polygel, dippowder, full cover would be useless? Because you’ll learn the same things
@@dv741 in all honesty yes. Those others aren't as hard to master as acrylic nor as popular (gelx becoming more popular but not up there) so it's best to do RUclips tutorials and practice the other stuff
GreAt video at the nail school I went to I was taught how to lay acrylic 4hrs a day 2hours of book work & test thank you for this
Thank you! Yes, nail school is no joke!
Omg yes I hate nail school 🙄 they teach you nothing!!
I've always loved painting nails and being creative. Watching your video helped me make my decision to really push forward to go to school. Thank you so much! 🥰🥰
Informative video 💖
I want to do nails but I’m a freshman in college. I’m willing to pay out of pocket but all the school in my area have negative reviews. I know I want to do nails along with still attending college. It’s hard figuring out where to start.
Are there any community colleges that offer a nail or cosmetology program in your area? I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the reviews because you essentially learn the same thing regardless of which school you go to
Question…if I can’t find a local school who only offers a nail tech program will I still be able to call myself a licensed nail technician with my cosmetology license?
Yes 👍🏾 because cosmetology includes nails as well :)
Yes ma’am
what if you don’t want to even do nails on other just want to do them on yourself? i’ve been going back and forth with the idea of going to nail school but i already know i don’t want to do nails for others
Good information I had my cosmetology license for 5 years and I love doing hair but lately I have really been really nails 💅🏽 more I just ordered my beginners kit from Amazon…do have any suggestions for nail beginner kit?
Typos in my previous comment
What school do you recommend? I live in California but I see lot of negative review in my area
I went to a public school, a community college in my area offered cosmetology. I’d recommend a public school for sure.
great video and very informative!! TFS
Hello, what school did go to?. I'm also from SD😊
Hello! I went to City College in downtown :)
A license manicures 30 years.🥰👌🏼🎊🎉😇 when you go to school you'll talk the proper way, to do nails that you don't have to worry about not knowing the proper way in applying acrylic, hybrid gels, polygels, glue overlays 🤔🧐 but it's always good to learn more than one skill in the beauty so you're very diverse?
I agree!
You also learn from a licensed instructor. Anyone can post a how-to video on RUclips.
A lot of good information is on the internet but not always. At least going to school, you know that the information being taught is accurate.
What’s with the unlicensed nail enthusiast? On top of the fact that you don’t know if people who are self taught are in school or not. You still have to teach yourself in school and out and this is coming from who is self taught and then I went to school afterwards.
I'm new nail tech
💜💜💜
Ima be self taught but licensed If that make sense....My school didn't teach me nothing not even get me ready for the state broad either....
School is a scam I feel.
You can research and learn what’s needed and what to do.
There are licensed techs out here teaching what they’ve learned.
Also, Several licensed techs do the most crappy jobs, a lot of their clients get infections by the hands of licensed techs and people tend to blame it on the unlicensed.
But anywho, I desire to go to school for the full college experience and just to have the license under my belt.
🖤 Master Cosmetologist 🖤
I can learn all these nail info and nail cleansing all on my own. This whole nail license certification is just a joke because here in the west, school and starting a business is just a game. Yes, it’s very important to make sure ur product tools are super clean and sanitized so u won’t get sued.
Exactly. Asking the state to do someone's nails is the most retarded shit I've ever heard of. However, the slave state needs more slave revenue and ignorant slaves keep asking for permission to do what they are already allowed to do.
Absolutely not. I learned the parts of the nails, I learned the anatomy of the body, I learned who can and can’t have manis/ pedis, I learned about ethics, I learned business.
It’s not about clean tools or nail art. I didn’t really even learn art in school.
You know 3rd trimester pregnant woman can’t get foot massages because it can trigger labor?
You know how long it takes to disinfect tools? Or why you can’t “clean” tools in rubbing alcohol?
What about the 3 levels of “clean” required so you don’t transfer diseased like aids or a fungus?
What is safe to use on diabetics ?
What’s the lunula? An onyx? What are the side walls? Where is the matrix of your nail? The mantle? What’s the grey lining called that creates a water tight seal so you don’t get infections sis? Where’s the apex?
Don’t get it twisted, knowledge is power. Ignorance is bliss. Get that education so your nail art actually has some foundation to sit on.
Uh… that’s why you GO TO SCHOOL! Besides that, I AM not going to be responsible for hurting someone because I wasn’t knowledgeable about their anatomy. That’s not going to sit well with me, so I would rather not be involved with that.
@@makaylamoody4066wow thank you so much for this information, I’m definitely going to take course …i I was one of the ignorant people
I went to school and completed my hours. I wanted to learn all the ins and outs but for some reason I don’t care for my license.. I feel like it’s a number for the state to be able to fine. I want to work from home and not at a salon so why do I even need a license for?
You have beautiful hands. My fingernails 👀...
Aww, thank you! Haha I’m sure your nails are beautiful 💜💜💜
Same! My nails are so brittle. I wish I had healthy strong nails like her 🥲
still be able to call myself a licensed
@Sculpted Onyx #bestofthebest!
Licensed doesn't necessarily mean they are practicing what they learned and being sanitary just like any career you have human error.
👊🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👊🏾💅🏽🎨💕
The sad and difficult part is that Nail Schools aren't that affordable...so Many (like me) can't afford to study and learn in a School and get their license🥲
